Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2013 Toyota Highlander - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2013 Toyota Highlander we'll be installing the Draw-Tite hitch, part number 75586. This is what our hitch will look like once its installed. Next I'll go ahead and give you a couple of measurements to assist you in selecting accessories for your new hitch. The center of the hitch pin hole is even with the outer edge of the bumper. The top of the receiver tube opening is 14 inches from the ground. This will assist you in selecting accessories such as ball mount, bike rack or cargo carrier. Now, I'll go ahead with installation. Now, to begin our install we'll first remove the under body panel on the drivers side.

There will be multiple fasteners to be removed as in pushpin fasteners and screws. To remove the pushpin fasteners we'll use a flat-blade screwdriver get under the center of the pushpin fastener pry it out to release the fastener and then remove it completely. We can then remove the screws that are securing the under body panel. Once we remove those we'll then go ahead and pull the under body panel out from underneath the vehicle setting it aside as it will not be reinstalled. Next, we'll go ahead and remove the tow hooks. There will be one on each side and each tow hook has two fasteners.

Once we remove these fasteners and tow hooks we'll set all the hardware and tow hooks aside as they will not be reinstalled and the hitch will take its place. Next we'll move over to the passenger side. As per the instructions we can go ahead and remove the fasteners and then remove the under body panel and not reinstall it. However, you can also cut off one attachment point here on the frame rail, and by cutting out this section it will allow us to leave the under body panel in place and still safely secure the hitch. We'll go ahead and take a paint marker, mark out the area to be trimmed and then using the rotary tool we'll cut out this section. Now, with that section cut out I'll go ahead and remove the bolt and piece that we cut off from the under body panel.

Next we'll go ahead and point our attachment points. Here on the drivers side we'll need to remove the weld nut cap. Now, with both frame rails clear were ready to go ahead and install the hitch. I'll be using the new 10-mm bolt and 3/8 conical-toothed washer with the teeth of the washer facing the hitch. It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install the fasteners.

As we bring the hitch around the exhaust we can go ahead and install the fasteners through the attachment points into the weld nuts of the frame. Now as we bring the drivers side to the frame we'll notice that the over spray from the insulation or caulking is in excess and won't allow the hitch to make metal-to-metal contact with the frame. Holding the hitch in place we're going to go ahead and take a paint marker, mark out this area and then cut it with a utility knife. Once we trim this area out go ahead and put the hitch directly against the frame. We'll install each fastener finger tight until we have them all in place. Now, with all the fasteners installed finger tight we'll go ahead and run them down. Next, we'll torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Now with the hitch secured and torqued to specifications we're ready to hit the road. That does it for the install of the Draw-Tite hitch part number 75586 on our 2013 Toyota Highlander.

While installation was simple and straightforward, I am pretty disappointed with the fit relative to the spare (17") on my '13 Highlander. The spare is difficult to raise back up and secure with this hitch. Even with one person raising it and another guiding it, it can't go all the way back up to rest against the frame cushions for it. I had installed a OEM Toyota hitch on my '10 Highlander, which installation was the same, but the fit around the body and spare was much better. Overall I would say if you are a fanatic about fit and the little things, spend the extra money for the Toyota. If you are OK with the fact it works but may not be exact, go for it. 87992

After a year I am happy with the product. Same issue from when I installed it exists, the one time I had to use the spare, it is a bit of a puzzle to get it back just right. I am also surprised after the winter to see a few spots of paint chipping off and rust peeking through.

Great fit installation was a breeze it took me a bit longer to install because instead of eliminating the plastic covers as suggested by even the manufacturer I modified the drivers side and didn`t have to remove the passenger side at all. 9250

Sorry no picture, however, the Trailer Hitch went in just as you explained. I wish all after market and add-on products were so good and easy to install. Perhaps you will set the bar for others to attempt to reach, good heavy duty hitch I'm sure it will be great. 89522

What you are doing is good business my friend, keep it up. Both hitch and wiring are great, use them six to 10 times per year without issues. What I need to find is something to cover or into the hitch opening the square opening is nice and clean however, a nice cover would be cool.Know where I can get one?Anyway, great products, great service and thanks again for checking back.

Glad to hear the hitch is holding up well. We've got a whole bunch of hitch covers and plugs that will fit your 2 inch hitch. Check out the link!

Was excited to get my hitch so quickly and I was able to install it in no time flat! Really appreciated the instructional video - it was a great help in making my decision. It was a great value for the money. I saved another $180 buy buying it from you and installing it myself. I can't wait to load up my bike and hit the trails. 80726

I get a lot of use out of the hitch. Not only do I use it for my bike rack, but I also bought a hitch basket for hauling extra stuff while on vacation. The extra space in the car that I gain alone makes the hitch a great investment!

I ordered the tow hitch and a 4-bike carrier indicated above for my '08 Highlander and have been very satisified with both purchases. I ordered at 2:45pm on Friday and received the products on Tuesday morning of that next week. Just 3 business days and the shipping was FREE! Just like indicated on the Etrailer website, the tow hitch was indeed specifically machined for my vehicle...in fact it took my wife and I just 20 mins to hold the hitch and tighten the 6 bolts to the chasis. It took me longer to figure out how to get the leverage to remove the bolts holding my factory tow hooks! Great product, fast-free delivery and easy installation....way-to-go Etrailer! 16555

I ordered the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver for my 2008 Toyota Highlander for the purpose of attaching a Thule bike rack. I wanted something that was reasonably priced, easy to install, sturdy enough to haul 4 bikes, and looked nice on my vehicle. I'm giving 5 stars because this product definitely hit all of these. Before installing I watched the installation video which was well done and very helpful. I was able to install the hitch receiver in about 45 minutes. I'll give the disclaimer that I installed this all by myself with the aid of a low profile dolly. Otherwise it's definitely a two person job because of the weight factor. 396373

It's OK... Installation was easy and quick. It appears that it may interfere with dropping the spare tire but I haven't tried to verify. It does extend out beyond the the bumper more than I'd prefer and the mount is more visable because it goes under the muffler rather than over it. I purchased the 2923 ballmount along with this and the ballmount's fit in the receiver is very loose. I don't which item is out of tolerance but I ended up using some electrical tape around the ballmount to make a better fit in the receiver because the constant banging drove me nuts. 721

As a first time user of etrailer.com, I am writing to express how pleased I was with the service, timeliness of delivery, and quality of product. I found the service representative very helpful in providing information and answering my questions; she assisted in ensuring the correct hitch for my vehicle. The product was received the next day - very fast considering I live in a different state! Installation went smoothly, exactly as shown on the video provided on the site. As indicated by the rating, I recommend etrailer.com as a reputable and quality provider. 33729

Great service from etrailer, product shipped in a flash. It arrived in great condition ready to install. Installation rating of 4/10 was right on the money, very easy overall. If you have a 2011 Highlander, this is a great solution for you. My 14-year old son and I installed in 45 minutes with ease. Some trimming of the plastic underbody covers on both sides, but my son did a great job on those with his pocket knife. It's that easy! Let's see, the dealer wants $1,200 and we did it for much less. Pretty simple decision. 243073

The trailer hitch for my Highlander arrived on wed after ordering on saturday. I did pay the extra $7.49 for quick shipping, but I did not expect it to be that quick. It arrived in good condition. Instructions were clear for installation. The hitch itself was extremely easy to install. The light package was a bit more of challenge, but that is a Toyota issue, not with the etrailer product. The online video was very helpful for the hitch. The hitch itself appears very well constructed and fit perfectly. I am very satisfied. 6805

Very easy to install on my 2010 Toyota Highlander. Instructions are clear and simple the video made it look easy. The Hitch took under 1 hour to install. I took a little extra time to custom fit the "Plastic appearance panels" and put them back on (a couple of cut of the plastic and they went back on). The hardest part was removing the pre-installed tow hooks the bolts were on tight. My other issue was that I did not have a torque wrench and had to borrow one from a friend. Shipping was fast!! Would buy from them again. 79964

I received my shipment a few days ago, the box was pretty damaged but after opening my package. It revealed nothing missing, all the screws were cleverly packed in the receiver slot so I was relived, after inspecting the hitch its seam to be in pretty good shape, I would recommend using another shipper/using foam wrapping around the corners of the hitches when packed. I have no complaints other than the shipping my package was in excellent condition and I can't wait to install it next weekend, and put it in use. 139916

Exelent product Easy installation. Took me abour one hour to install it. Don't listen any one who will be telling about not putting back left and right side plastic corners (guards) under bumper. Right one fits perfect. Left one needs to be altornated (just cut it from existing hole in the middle in the bumper dirrection and change profile of center hole ro recive new bracket. This altornation took one half of installation time in total). Will be good if manufacture will make some type of temlate for it. 3514

Great standard shipping time was in stock and ordered Saturday received Tuesday. Installed Tuesday night in no time. The only issue is the install of rear Tow-Plug Adapter on Toyota 2013 Highlander Hybrid is different that the pictures in the instructions. In the Toyota 2013 Highlander Hybrid they (Toyota) moved the 12 volt battery into the back driver side compartment, still has the same connector (see picture) 75196

I couldn't be happier with the installation of my hitch and brake controller for my 2011 Toyota Highlander. I had the pre wired harness, but that doesn't mean much. If you are trying to decide what you need to buy to install a hitch and brake controller on your car, here are the product #'s I ordered: 75586 ETBC7 118449 90185 I used all of the parts, and installation was very clean! 20883

Great timing delivering the item I purchased. Fast delivery! Box was extremely large, item shifted considerably in transit, scuff marks and a few scratches were present. I have purchased hitches in the past and they have not weathered well. They were powered coated and peeled, exhibiting poor adhesion to the base metal. • Bike Rack Options for a 2008 Toyota Highlander for Very Occasional Use
  • There are two possible ways that you can carry a bike on your 2008 Toyota Highlander, but I am sorry to say that a trunk mount bike rack will not work. It cannot be safely attached to the vehicle. However, you can still use either a trailer hitch mounted rack or a roof rack. If you want to go with a trailer hitch, I recommend Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 75586. And for a bike rack, you can go with something basic like the Commuter 2 Bike Carrier, # HR2500. • Availability of a Trailer Hitch for a 2012 Toyota Highlander with a 17 Inch Spare Tire
  • Both the Draw-Tite, # 75586, and Hidden Hitch, # 87452, will fit with a 17 inch spare tire on your 2012 Toyota Highlander. I could not say where the Toyota factory hitch is located, but the hitches we carry have the receiver below the rear fascia as you can see in the instructions I have included. If you plan on doing some towing with the hitch, I recommend the etrailer Ball Mount Kit, # 989900. It comes with two ball mounts, two balls, a hitch pin with clip, and a carrying bag. For...

  • Comparison of Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 75726 and Curt Hitch # 13534 for a 2008 Toyota Highlander
  • Both the Curt Trailer Hitch, # 13534, and the Draw-Tite Hitch, # 75726 for a 2008 Toyota Highlander will install in very much the same way. I have included installation instructions for both hitches below for comparison. I have also included video links showing installation of each hitch. Although the Draw-Tite model has a higher capacity at 7500 lbs towing and 750 lbs tongue weight, you will still be limited by the vehicle manufacturers stated towing capacity, which is a maximum of...

  • Trailer Hitch and 4 Bike Hanging Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2012 Toyota Highlander
  • If you want to carry 4 bikes I definitely recommend going with Class III trailer hitch because of its higher capacity and plethora of accessory options. The Draw-Tite hitch, # 75586, would be my first choice but # 75726 is less visible since the bracket goes over the exhaust rather than under it. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you. For a bike rack, I believe I have the perfect rack for you. Take a look at the Softride Dura, # SR26247. This rack has all the...

  • Will the Draw-Tite Hitch for a 2012 Toyota Highlander Let Me Keep My Full Size Spare
  • Yes, you will be able to keep your 17 inch spare tire as a spare on your 2012 Toyota Highlander with this Draw-Tite Hitch # 75586. I attached a picture of this hitch installed on a similar Highlander as yours with the spare also retained. To complete your towing setup you may be interested in an etrailer.com Ball Mount Kit # 989900.

  • Will Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 75586 Interfere with Spare Tire Access on a 2010 Toyota Highlander
  • Access to the spare tire will not be restricted if you were to install Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 75586, on your 2010 Toyota Highlander as long as you do not have the 19 inch spare. The hitch will not fit with the 19 inch spare. The hitch was designed with the smaller spare tire in mind. If you click on the 6th picture on the product page, you will see the hitch installed and the spare tire above it. To remove the spare, you would unscrew the center wing nut holding it in. The tire...

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2012 Toyota Highlander
  • Trunk mounted bike racks cannot be used on the 2012 Toyota Highlander because they cannot be safely secured to the vehicle because the spoiler will interfere. In order to carry bikes, you would need a trailer hitch and hitch mount bike rack. For a trailer hitch, I recommend Draw-Tite hitch # 75586. The 2 inch receiver will allow you more options for accessories like bike racks. For a 2 bike rack, our most popular rack is the Swagman XTC-2, # S64670. This is a platform style rack that...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2011 Toyota Highlander
  • If your 2011 Toyota Highlander has a full-size spare like the 19 inch, you will not be able to install a trailer hitch, that also allows weight distribution, without storing the tire somewhere else such as in the rear cargo area of the vehicle. If you do decide to move the spare tire or change to the mini spare, I recommend the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 75586. This is the most popular hitch for your vehicle that allows the use of a weight distribution system. I have included a link...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for Light Duty Hauling with a 2004 Toyota Highlander
  • The three hitches available for your Highlander share the same weight rating, they would install in the same manner and all three are almost identical, visually speaking. The three hitches are on an equal par as far as quality goes, so you can choose the least expensive Curt # 13530 and not feel like you've sacrificed anything. As you can see in the installation instructions and video (see links), the hitch bolts into place, I wouldn't recommend welding it, because it would void the...

  • Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2011 Toyota Highlander
  • In order to carry bikes on your vehicle, you will either need to add a roof rack or a trailer hitch. At this time, there are no trunk mount bike rack options that will fit a 2011 Toyota Highlander. The bike racks can not be secured to the top of the rear hatch properly. I recommend adding a trailer hitch because it is more versatile and cost effective than a roof rack. I recommend the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 75586, because it does not require the use of a stabilization strap when...

  • Replacement Rubber Straps For The Rhode Gear 4 Bike Hitch Shuttle Bike Rack
  • I called my contact at Yakima and they informed me that they currently do not make nor stock replacement parts for the Rhode Gear 4 Bike Hitch Shuttle anymore. However, I suggest trying the Replacement Rubber Straps for Yakima BedRoc and Older Big Horn Models part # Y8820103 as these are very similar to your current support straps and according to the Yakima representative, should work for you. I would also agree with this statement as they do look very similar though, but since they have...

  • Clearance When Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE 4 Bike Rack is Folded Up On 2008 Toyota Highlander
  • The clearance at the rear of your vehicle will depend on the distance needed from your trailer hitch to clear the rear bumper of your 2008 Highlander. The Curt trailer hitch # 13534 requires approximately 3 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to clear the rear bumper. The Draw-Tite trailer hitches # 75726, # 75586 have their hitch pin holes approximately even with the rear bumper, and the front of the receiver sits approximately 2-1/2 inches away from the rear of the bumper. When...

  • Hitch Fit on 2010 Toyota Highlander with Full-Size Spare
  • The Toyota Highlanders that we have had here for hitch installation, including several model years from 2009 on up, have all had full-size spare tires mounted underneath the rear of the vehicle but it is possible for the vehicle to have a small spare, or donut. The easiest way to find out is to look under the vehicle. Some of our hitches will fit just fine with the full-size spare but others such as # 75586 will only allow the donut spare to be re-installed after the hitch is mounted.

  • We offer several trailer hitches designed to fit your 2012 Toyota Highlander. When considering any hitch-mounted accessory you will want to make sure you have the clearance from the back bumper. The hitch I recommend is the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, part # 75586. This is a Class lll hitch and has a 2 inch receiver opening. I have attached a link to an installation video for this trailer hitch on a 2012 Highlander you can check out. As noted in the video, the clearance from the hitch...

  • Fit of Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch 75586 on a 2010 Toyota Highlander
  • Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 75586 would fit very snugly against your vehicle frame, as the mounting fasteners are installed and then torqued down to 42ft-lbs. You may find, however, that some accessories will fit snugly and others will fit more loosely in the hitch receiver. Small variances in paint and manufacturing tolerances can cause the same accessory to fit different hitches different ways. If you do find you have some rattle, you can remedy this by installing an anti-rattle device...

  • Although it is true that the Draw-Tite Hitch # 75586 will not fit on a 2010 Toyota Highlander with the 19 inch spare tire, per the instructions, I do have a solution for you. Draw-Tite has another hitch, part # 75726, that will fit with a 19 inch spare tire. I called the manufacturer and they confirmed that it has a slightly different style that will allow you to keep your full sized spare in the storage area. This hitch has a Gross Towing Weight of 5,000 lbs and a Tongue Weight of 750...

  • Trailer Hitch and 3 Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2009 Toyota Highlander
  • In order to carry 3 bikes on your 2009 Toyota Highlander, you will need to use a trailer hitch. None of the trunk mount bike racks will fit your vehicle. A trailer hitch has many other uses above and beyond a bike rack. You can also tow trailers, travel trailers, can pop up campers, and you can also use other accessories such as a trailer hitch mount cargo carrier. For a trailer hitch I recommend # 75586. This is a Class III trailer hitch that will allow you many options for bike racks...
