I went to this type of hitch because my Curt hitch had too little ground clearance on my VW GTi. Once the body panels were removed installation was easy and the hitch is really solid. It attaches to the car only at the ends of the hitch bar, unlike others whick also triangulate back to other mounting points. Still it seems to resist rocking better than others that I’ve tried. Working with the body panels was a major PITA and added a lot to the installation time. Still, it’s partly hidden and very steady on the road, even with two bikes in the rack. The price is good and etrailer service is great as usual. Highly recommended!
Steve B - 10/29/2021Install wasn’t bad. I installed it on my GTI. It looks super clean… can barely notice it. The GTI had poor options for bike racks. The hitch allowed me to get a great bike rack and protect my bikes. It all works great.
One year later... I use this hitch about every other week for pulling my 4x8 trailer. It works great and is holding up fantastically. There is very little rust on the tube. I am still a fan. The best part is you can't even tell I have a hitch unless you really look.
James B - 04/30/2021This was installed on my 2018 GTI. The installation requires you to (1) remove the tail lights (easy), (2) remove the rear bumper (challenging, you will need a T15 and T25 screw driver, plus a T25 socket on a 3/8 drive ratchet -- note that removing the rear wheels will make accessing the torx retainers much easier) and (3) remove rear impact bar (easy, 13mm socket). Finally, the valence will need to be cut (approx. 2" by 2" hole, use a dremel, razor blade, or tin snips). The hitch sits high and looks good. My valence cut wasn't very good, so I have some vinyl wrap covering my flaws until I can 3d print something a little nicer. All-in-all, a great hitch.
