Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2015 Volkswagen Jetta - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2015 Volkswagen Jetta, we're going to review and install the Draw-Tite Sportframe Class I one and a quarter inch Receiver Tube Hitch, part number 24926. Now here's what our hitch is going to look like once installed. We've got a nice stylish round cross tube going into our Class I one and a quarter inch by one and a quarter inch receiver tube. On the other side we'll have our chain hold downs that are easy to access and get to, and a half inch pin hole that goes all the way through for our pin or anti-rattle bolt. The hitch itself is capable of up to two hundred pounds of towing weight and a two thousand pound tow capacity. Next we'll give you a couple of measurements. This will assist you selecting accessories, such as a bike rack and a cargo carrier.

From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is four and a half inches. From the top of the receiver tube opening down to the ground is ten inches. We'll now go ahead and show you the minimum tools required for installing the hitch. Got our T25 torques bit, ten millimeter socket, thirteen millimeter socket, eleven sixteenths, and three quarter. Use an extension, ratchet, and then our torque wrench.

Now let's go ahead and show you just how easy it is to install the hitch. Now to begin our install we're going to open up the trunk and remove the spare tire. Now just to get it out of our way we'll take the spare tire cover out and set it aside. Then remove the spare tire tools and the spare tire. Next we're going to remove the rubber plug here in the bottom of the spare tire well on the driver's side. This will then become our forward attachment point on the driver's side.

Using a flat blade screwdriver we can peel the plug out, set it aside, as it will not be reinstalled. Next here on the passenger side we need to remove the under body panel. There are multiple fasteners that will be need to be removed. Now with the under body panel out of the way we're going to go ahead and lower the vapor canister. This will not be on all applications, but clearly it is on this one. To lower the canister we'll remove the three fasteners.

Hang on to your fasteners as we will be re-installing it. Next we're going to move over to the driver's side and lower the exhaust. To lower the exhaust we'll remove the two bolts and secure the exhaust bracket to the frame. We'll set those fasteners aside, as they will not be reinstalled because they're going to get replaced with new hardware with our install kit. Now with our exhaust bracket free I'm going to go ahead and give you a quick tech tip. If we pull the bracket down and bend the two tabs flat it makes it easier to get our hitch in place and line up our hardware. Just using a pair of pliers I'm going to go ahead and bend the tabs. Now let's go ahead and point out the attachment points. Here on the passenger side we're going to have two attachment points. One will utilize the oval hole here in the side of the frame, towards the end of the frame, and one of the pre-drilled holes here in the bottom of the frame. Now for this application the pre-drilled hole is the one in the center between the three. To get our hardware into the frame we're going to use the access hole behind the rear axle. Bottom of the frame attachment point we're going to have a handle nut that will get fed into the frame and over the round hole. Then going up through the hitch and into the handle nut will be our new twelve millimeter bolt and half inch conkle-tooth washer. The teeth of the washer will face the hitch as it goes through the hitch and into the handle nut. For the side of the frame attachment point we'll use a seven sixteenth carriage bolt that will get fed into the frame with the spacer block. The carriage bolt will engage the spacer block, come out the frame, go through a second spacer block, then through the hitch. Once it goes through the hitch it will get secured with a conkle-tooth washer, teeth of the washer faces the hitch, and then a hex nut. Now to get our hardware into the frame and coming out the side attachment point we'll use a seven-sixteenth pull wire that will get fed through the attachment point out the access hole to get our hardware into position. Now the new hardware we'll be using for the exhaust bracket attachment point is going to be the eight millimeter bolt and a conkle-tooth washer. The teeth of the washer will face the exhaust bracket, as it will go through the exhaust bracket, through the hitch, and back into the weld nuts. Now the hardware we're going to use here for our forward attachment point on the driver's side is going to be a half inch carriage bolt and a large block. The carriage bolt and block will sit inside the truck pan, coming down through the hole, go through the hitch, and then get secured with a conkle-tooth washer and hex nut. We're now ready to start installing our hardware. Here on the passenger side we'll go ahead and put our handle nut in place first. Take the handle nut, line it up with the attachment point, mark it, and then bend the handle as necessary to get it in place. We're now ready to go ahead and put our hitch in place. It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install your fasteners. We have the driver's side up above the exhaust. Then we'll bring the passenger side up to the frame, lining up our hitch with the handle nut. Now keep in mind as we install our fasteners we'll install each one finger tight until they're all in place. Next we'll work on the side attachment point here on the passenger side. We'll feed the block into position. Then once our block is in place, take our pull wire, feed it through the hitch, through the block, and into the frame, sending it back towards our access hole. We'll pull it down. We'll go just far enough that we can slide on the block and thread on our carriage bolt. We'll then feed the block and bolt into the frame separately. Use our pull wire to pull them into place, into position, then remove the pull wire, then install the fastening hardware. You'll notice I'm putting a little side pressure on my carriage bolt. That's just to make sure it doesn't fall back into the frame before I get the conkle-tooth washer slid on, and thread on the hex nut. Next we'll take our carriage bolt and block, and go down through the spare tire well, and through the hitch. Note before we put the block in place we're going to want to apply some gasket sealant to seal up between the block and the spare tire well. We're going to use the Loctite RTV, part number LT37467, and put a small bead around the block, so that we seal up where we removed the plastic plug from. Now we'll go ahead and put the carriage bolt down through the hole, and set our block into place. Next we'll move underneath and install our fasteners. We'll install our conkle-tooth washer, again the teeth of the washer will face the hitch, and then our half inch hex nut. Now with all our fasteners installed we'll go ahead and tighten them down. Now with all our fasteners tightened down we'll go ahead and torque the specifications as indicated in the instructions. Now with our hitch tightened down and torque specifications we need to reinstall the fuel vapor canister, but we'll have to shim it down away from the frame to allow for the hitch and hardware. To do that we're going to add three flat washers provided for each of the attachment points, and reuse the manufacturer's bolt. Let's get this first one started to hold it up there, so we can get the remaining washers in place with the fasteners. Then once we have them all in place we can go ahead and tighten them down. Now with everything reinstalled we'll take our under body panel and just put it into the trunk of the vehicle as it does not have to be reinstalled. Now with our hitch installed we'll go ahead and reinstall the spare tire and tools. Put our spare tire cover back in just like that. Our hitch is installed and we're ready to hit the road. That will do it for the review and install of the Draw-Tite SportFrame Class I one and a quarter inch Receiver Tube Hitch, part number 24926, on our 2015 Volkswagen Jetta.

This was my third experience with etrailer, and unfortunately not the best. The installation was more challenging than billed. It was particularly difficult to pull the side bolt through the frame, and pull it through the spacer. I never did get it done right. I will have to find some time to go back, completely remove the hitch and completely pull the bolt through, because right now I don't have the side bolt on the passenger side installed. It still might be solid enough for my bike carrier, but I want to make it completely right. My previous installations on a Mitsubishi Outlander and a Nissan Rogue were straightforward and trouble-free; I can't say the same for this one. 408773

I bought the hitch primarily for a bike rack. Installation was simple and straight forward. I did deviate from instructions about leaving the lower cover off. I felt uncomfortable leaving the leak detection pump exposed to the elements. A simple slot cut into the lower right cover to straddle the hitch leg solved the problem. 549269

The hitch appears to be a quality product. Everything bolted on without any additional modifications although the passenger side hardware can be very tricky to install. Take your time with that side and be sure to have an extra set of hands available. Extremely impressed with the shipping. I received this hitch near the xmas holiday, 4 days earlier than I expected it. (2017 VW Jetta). 462964

One year and the hitch has been great. This hitch hauls my trailer flawlessly and I have had no problems with it. I am very happy to be able to haul my kayaks or pickup lumber without having to dump my hard earned cash into the gas tank of a guzzling truck. Very practical solution for my hauling needs.

2016 Jetta The fit up and alignment were great. Also, kudos for the install video on the trailer web site. Had a lot of trouble with the fished in bolt and plate. Had to clearance the plate opening so the bolt shoulder would fit. Almost gave up on the bolt, but after 15 minutes of jiggling, sweating, and hoping, the bolt came thru the plate, body, spacer and hitch. Not an easy fit. It worked out though, so all is well. My advice is to test fit these pieces on the hitch prior to assembly. Also trimmed the evaporator cover per the Curt instructions, and re installed. Took some fitting to get ot right, but all trimming was done with a razor knife, so not too hard. 652800

I bought this to use a hitch mounted bike rack and have not been disappointed at all. The receiver is not very noticeable on my car and is well built. It was difficult to install and took a few hours to complete, but that was more because of the design of car than the hitch. 607993

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • How Visible are the Trailer Hitch Receivers that are Confirmed to Fit a 2017 Volkswagen Jetta
  • We carry two trailer hitch receivers that fit your 2017 Volkswagen Jetta; a Draw-Tite, part # 24926, and a Curt, part # C11474. With both hitches you can see the cross tube under the Jetta's rear bumper. I've attached pictures of each installed. The picture of the Draw-Tite is from when we installed the hitch (The video of this install is also linked) and the Curt is taken directly from the install details since we haven't had the chance to install it ourselves. • We do have light-duty 1-1/4-inch Class I hitches for the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta 4-door sedan that are shown on the linked page. Both share the same towing capacity of 2000-lbs. Since there are four different versions of the 2017 VW Jetta (the S, SE, SEL and GLI) to confirm your model's towing capacity you need to check your printed manual. Currently VW's website does not have online manual access due to them redesigning their application. I suggest the Curt Class I hitch # C11474 over...

This is a Class I hitch, which is all that is available for the Jetta, which means you are limited to a maximum of 2 bikes on a bike rack that is rated for use on a Class I hitch. The only Thule bike racks that will work with a Class I hitch and that can tilt down with bikes loaded are the T2 Pro, # TH9035XT or # TH9035XTS, or T2 Classic # TH9045. Draw-Tite has confirmed that their 1-1/4-inch Class I hitch # 24926 is a confirmed fit on the gas-engine 4-door Jetta sedan so long as it is not the TDI or Hybrid version. The hitch comes with all required mounting hardware; the written instructions and an install video are linked for you. This...

  • Can Under Body Panel be Trimmed and Reinstalled on 2016 VW Jetta when Installing Draw-Tite Hitch
  • I do have a solution for you but there isn't a video or specific instructions for trimming the under body panel on your 2016 Volkswagen Jetta for Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24926. What you can do is use the Curt instructions and video (linked for reference) as a guide to trim the panel. The Curt and Draw-Tite hitches have similar designs so while the trimming will be a little different the video and instructions are a good starting point.

I confirmed the fit with my contact there. This hitch includes all required mounting hardware and instructions, and an installation video is linked too. • We estimate the install time of the Draw-Tite # 24926 for a professional installer to be approximately 1 hour. However, for a novice it will take longer to install. Install time will depend on the tools and experience of the installer. If you have a local shop install the hitch, it is difficult to say how much time they will bill. Installation will require trunk access, lowering the exhaust, and removing part of the underbody fascia. If the shop doesn't often install trailer hitches,...

It looks like you could trim it in such a way so that the rear end rests on top of the hitch cross tube. How you trim it is ultimately up to you and I don't see a reason why you couldn't.

  • You are correct that only 1-1/4-inch light-duty Class I hitches like Draw-Tite # 24926 and Curt # C59236 are offered for your 2017 Volkswagen Jetta. While it is possible to use a hitch adapter like # HTAD or # HT5R in some circumstances to allow use of a 2-inch accessory in a Class I hitch, I do not recommend this because all such adapters cause you to lose half of your hitch capacity due to the additional leverage applied to the hitch from the load being further away from it.
