Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2008 Ford Mustang - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2008 Ford Mustang we're going to be installing the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver part number 24747. This hitch is a Class I rated hitch and does have an 1-1/4" opening in the receiver tube. Here's what our hitch looks like installed on our vehicle. Now we'll go ahead and give you a couple measurements in helping you choose some accessories for your hitch, such as a bicycle rack or a cargo carrier. From the center of the center hitch pin hole to the outer most edge of the bumper is approximately 5-1/2". From the top of the opening in the receiver to the ground, is approximately 12-1/2". Now let's go ahead and install our hitch. We're going to need to first begin underneath the vehicle and we're going to need to remove an exhaust hanger that's above the muffler on each side.

Now in order to remove the hanger above each of the mufflers, you're going to need to remove a couple of bolts that hold it in place. You'll also need to remove the rear exhaust hanger at the back end of the muffler. Once you have the exhaust hangers removed from the rear portion you're going to need to open up this hole right here by drilling it out. Here's the hardware that we're going to be using to secure the hitch to the vehicle. It'll be a 7/16 carriage bolt, a square hole spacer block, a conical tooth washer and a hex nut. Let's go ahead and show you where the mounting locations will be located.

We'll be using this hole right here, as well as this hole right here. There will be a total of two mounting locations on each side. In order to install our hardware into the vehicle's frame we're going to use the fish wire or bolt leader method to do that. We'll take the coiled end of the bolt leader or fish wire and we'll go through each of the mounting locations and then we'll come out the round access hole that's further up in the frame. It's located above the muffler on each side. We'll then take our square hole spacer block and feed it onto the bolt leader, we'll then thread the carriage bolt onto that.

Now once we have our carriage bolt and spacer block pulled into position, we don't want to pull it all the way into the mounting hole location yet. We'll go ahead and also leave the fish wire or bolt leader connected to the bolt for now. We'll go ahead and repeat this same process for the other three mounting locations. Now it's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you raise the hitch up into position. As you're raising the hitch up into position you'll need to take each of the fish wires and feed it through the appropriate hole in the hitch. Once you have the mounting holes lined up you can go ahead and pull each of the fish wires, pulling the carriage bolt into position so that the hitch is supported. We can go ahead and remove each of the fish wires over here on the driver side and we'll then install a conical tooth washer making sure that the teeth face toward the hitch, followed by a hex nut, on each of the locations.

We'll then go ahead and move over to the passenger side. Over here we're going to need to take that exhaust bracket that we removed earlier and we drilled that hole out a little bit larger. That end of the bracket will actually slide through the slot in the hitch and line up with the hole that the bolt came out of originally, as well as with the other hole here in the hitch. The reason why we drilled that hole out larger was to compensate for the thickness of the hitch so it's actually scooting the bracket toward the center of the vehicle a little bit. You may need to work at getting this bracket back through the hitch, but it does go. It just takes a little bit of time. You go ahead and slide the bracket back onto the hanger on the muffler as well as you're putting it back into position. You can then install the conical tooth washer and hex nut in each of the two locations. Now that we have the hardware installed in the exhaust bracket we can go ahead and tighten down all the hardware securing the hitch in place. Then we'll torque it down to the manufacturer's specification. Once you have all the hardware torqued down you'll then need to reinstall the remaining exhaust hangers, as well as any other hardware that you may have removed during the installation. With that, that'll do it for the installation of the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver part number 24747 as installed here on our 2008 Ford Mustang. .

Ordered this hitch on Wednesday and it was delivered to my front porch Friday morning - and I didn't choose special delivery! Hitch was little too challenging for me to install, but etrailer hooked me up with a local company that did the installation. Etrailer's price was $20 less thant the local dealer would have charged for the hitch. Overall very good experience. 31182

Everything arrived as promised. Had a local shop install the hitch, which went on "without a hitch" (couldn't help the pun). Using this for my high-end bike rack and thus far it is performing as I expected. 32791

Hitch installed well. Took Approx. 2 hours on my garage floor. What they don't tell you is you will need to open the frame rail holes larger to accommodate the hardware. Original factory holes are way to small. A drill and a metal hole saw got it done. From there the hardware goes in smoothly. I could only lower the right side muffler so it was a bit awkward but the hitch isn't even noticeable on the car. Fit and finish are very nice. I installed it with no assistance. This is the 4th hitch I have gotten from etrailer and all have been excellent with easy installs. Watch the video's, adapt what you can and good luck. The pic has the hitch cover installed, like I said you can't even see it. 187800

Excellent, if it was self-installing. I finally got the Mustang over here and took the hitch out of the box and it looks like it will fit OK, after I remove the rear bumper assembly to be able to get my human hands and arms positioned to make up the hardware to the frame. DIY; some assembly required. I'll probably need a morning to figure it all out and execute. 717714

Worked and fitted as advertised. Yes, it was a bit of a pain in the neck to install but it only took a few hours from start to finish. They included the wires for fishing the bolts through the frame, you don’t have to buy them separately. 668754

The product is not at fault, it's my lack of experience and the correct tools for the job. Pay attention to the directions where it tells you to drill 3/8" out of the muffler bracket. I drilled the wrong side out. Stupid mistake. So once I got the hanger back on the holes wouldn't line up. Getting the hitch bolted on at the same time you're trying to get the hanger in place is a challenge. The right tools would be a lift and pneumatics for the tight spaces. So, its now 7am and I'm sitting in a [rental trailer provider] parking lot hoping to get them to tighten the carriage bolt I can't reach. 646738

Fast shipping arrived early .Solid made product . Overall fit was good but one thing to keep in mind , if you have an aftermarket exhaust it may not fit . I had to remove my mufflers because they were a bit larger then stock. I left them off and fabricated some new tips .1 thing I'd like to see is longer fish wire for fishing bolts through the frame it's only about 2 inches longer then the length you need to fish snap if you touch it the wrong way it falls into the frame holes. Would definitely recommend this to someone looking for a easy to install budget friendly hitch . 634639

Great experience with e-trailer.com all around. Ordering was simple, and trailer hitch (Draw-Tite) was delivered as described by UPS in a fail-safe packaging. I sold my Jeep Wrangler and had an old Mustang as a back-up for light trailering but no hitch. Went on your website, saw the application for the 05 Mustang and ordered the hitch. Around 100 bucks with free shipping. Saved about 125.00 from big box auto stores locally. Also, the follow-up communications regarding order receipt, shipping, and date of delivery was most reassuring. You guys do it right. I'll certainly recommend or buy your available products without question. Thanks for a great on-line buying experience. 614702

2007 Ford Mustang

I purchased a hitch for a 2007 Mustang. My car is a GT convertible with a 4.6 liter V8 and dual exhaust. The hitch arrived sooner than promised, five stars for that. Instructions are clear and simple. I did watch an installation video prior to purchase so I had an idea of what I was looking g at. The installation was easier than I expected. The instructions indicated that I would have to drop the exhaust on both sides but to my surprise no removal was required on the drivers side. My only request would be that a second replacement exhaust hanger bolt be provided for the passengers side due to the fact that I used the one provided to replace the bolt that installs in to the bottom bracket hole on the rear most hanger and I would like a longer than original length bolt to reinstall into the inboard hole of the same bracket. The reason for this request is that with the hanger reinstalled it is stacked on the hitch frame and the OEM bolt isn't penetrating the nut in the frame by very many threads. I did have to open up the holes in the bottom of the car frame to allow the bolt heads and spacers to pass through on their way to the mounting holes. No modification was required to the hitch whatsoever. I will be moving to a new home over the next several months and will use the car to tow a small enclosed trailer each trip we make. I would recommend this company,'s product in a minute and their customer service is A plus, they even answer on Sunday afternoons. 458274

  • Trailer Hitch Fit Recommendation for 2008 Ford Mustang GT
If you have a 2008 Ford Mustang GT like what you described the Draw Tite Hitch part # 24747 is the correct hitch to use. Since you do not have a California Special or a Shelby this would be an easy fit for you. The install video I attached shows the hitch installed on a GT model just like yours.

The included ball mount uses a ball with a 3/4 inch shank diameter. A compatible 2 inch diameter ball would be # 19258. Make sure to stay within the towing limits of the car or trailer hitch; whichever is lower. The hitch is rated at 200 pounds tongue weight capacity and 2,000 pounds gross trailer weight. You would not need to use stabilizing straps if you were to use a Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver # 24747 to carry a bike rack on your 2009 Ford Mustang. As long as the bike rack and bikes do not exceed the tongue capacity of this hitch you would have no problem installing a bike rack into this hitch. I attached installation instructions for this product also.

  • Bike Carrier Options for 2008 Ford Mustang GT Convertible
The one hitch we offer for your 2008 Ford Mustang V8 convertible, Draw-Tite # 24747, does not fit on the specialty GT models including your convertible. But we can still help you with a bike carrier option that will work fine on the GT. The linked page displays all trunk-mount 2- and 3-bike carriers confirmed to fit on your convertible Mustang GT. Many come from Saris, maker of the highly-rated Bones 2 rack # SA805BL, which uniquely, is offered in a nice range of color options. This...

  • Hitch Recommendation for a 2007 Ford Mustang GT
For your 2007 Ford Mustang GT there are only 1-1/4 inch hitches available like the Draw Tite Hitch part # 24747. 2 inch hitches are usually only used on larger vehicles like SUVs and trucks that will have higher towing capacities. I attached an install video for this hitch as well as a couple help articles on hitch sizes.

  • What Trailer Hitches Will Fit a 2006 Ford Mustang GT Convertible
For the 2006 Ford Mustang GT, we list a couple possible trailer hitch options. First is the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 24747. This hitch will not accept the Invisi-Hitch, # 28451. And it will not fit the GT/CS (California Special), Shelby GT, or GT500. It is a Class I trailer hitch with a 1-1/4 inch receiver and has 200 pounds tongue weight capacity and 2,000 pounds gross trailer weight capacity. If you are planning on doing some towing, you would need to add a ball mount and trailer...

  • Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2007 Ford Mustang GT Convertible
A trunk mount bike rack is not recommended for the 2007 Ford Mustang convertible because it would not be able to secure to the vehicle properly. The best solution is to install a trailer hitch and use a hitch mount bike rack. Trailer hitch # 24747 will fit a GT convertible. I have linked a video showing installation for you. For a compatible bike rack I recommend the Swagman Trailhead # S63360. I have linked a video review of the bike rack as well. If you will be carrying any bikes...

  • Carrying 2 Bikes on a 2006 Ford Mustang with Rear Spoiler
I spoke with my contact at Thule and she stated that none of the trunk mount bike racks will fit on a 2006 Ford Mustang if it has a rear spoiler. The spoiler will interfere with the safe mounting of the bike rack. In order to carry 2 bikes with your Mustang, you will need to install a trailer hitch, the most popular of which is # 24747. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you to view. Then you can use a bike rack compatible with a Class I hitch like the Swagman...

  • How to Carry Bikes on a 2005 Ford Mustang Convertible with Rear Spoiler
Neither Thule nor Yakima recommend the use of a trunk mount bike rack on a 2005 Mustang Convertible with or without a spoiler. The bike racks cannot be safely installed on the vehicle. I do have a solution that will allow you to carry up to 2 bikes. You can install a trailer hitch like # 24747 and use a hitch mount bike rack that is compatible with a Class I trailer hitch. For a compatible bike rack I recommend the Swagman Titan, # S63400. This rack has anti-sway cradles, it can...

  • How to Carry Two E-Bikes with 2009 Ford Mustang
I can help you find a way to carry a pair of 60 lb E-Bikes with your 2009 Ford Mustang, though it will require a trailer hitch and hitch-mounted bike rack. Trunk-mounted bike racks such as the Saris Sentinel 2 Bike Carrier # SA1051 you referenced do not have the weight capacity for 60 lb bikes, they actually max out at 35 lbs. For your 2009 Mustang the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch # 24747 will work great as a way to carry your bike rack. Since this is a Class I hitch with a 1-1/4...
