2012 Audi Q7

I installed the unit on my 2012 Audi Q7 TDI - with Regards to the Trailer Hitch itself = A+. If you plan to install this yourself - pay attention to the 10 out of 10 on the difficulty scale when given the lack of details within the instructions. It took me a good 4 hours to complete, as I kept second guessing the basic instructions provided and searched the blog/youtube etc.. for needed details. The Q7 has 4 screws within each wheel well and 4- 10mm nuts that need to be removed from within the spare tire well. Once all these are removed you have to be very aggressive in order to pull away the Fascia from its wheel well clips/retainers. You must pull away from the vehicle (out to the side with a loud POP) and then towards the rear. There is a plastic support that holds the Fascia to the vehicle at the rear of the wheel wells - the bumper Fascia both clips in and has the screws attached that get removed -it is a tight fit and you cant be gentle. This is where a second pair of hands will help - the wiring harnesses (3 in total -rt side of vehicle) need to be disconnected while you hold the Fascia in the air - not quite long enough to set on ground without pulling things too tight. After the Bumper Fascia "Pops" off - everything is clear from then on.

I then trimmed the Access door/plate with a Dremel and Grinder to fill in all of the extra space (see Picture) - take your time with this = measure twice and cut once because you are on your own as there is no stencil provided.

Warning - The Curt Hitch Receiver does not replace the original/allow for the use of the original Audi Tow eye tool to be used. The tow eye access caps become useless - there are the 2 cap/flaps in the bumper.

Hi Don,Great job on your Q7 and thanks for the details. It gave me the courage of going forward on this. I had put few hitches previously but this one didnt look that simple. Where did you get the wiring harness?I got mine2015 a few month ago and your experience and tips about this car will be very welcome too.ThanksChris

2009 Audi Q7

Everything went great. From ordering to installation. The videos were extremely helpful. Knowing what tools I needed made install go smooth. It only took me 2 hours by myself to install.

This product is still the best purchase ever for my vehicle. People ask about it all the time and I tell them that I purchased it from etrailer and even installed it myself after watching the video on etrailers site. Even my auto dealer complimented my hitch even though I didnt purchase from them. Ive connected a simple bike rack to a more sturdier bike rack to haul 4 bikes. Love this hitch.

2013 Audi Q7

Showed up damaged, in the box. Powder coating/paint scratched. Unsightly and a corrosion risk. I will sand and repaint -- a time investment I did not expect with a new product.

Sorry to hear about this inconvenience. Customer Service will reach out.

2011 Audi Q7

Great Hitch, fit perfectly as advertised. Did it at night with my friend and it took us 2 hours to install . Perhaps in the light of day it would have been easier. Instructions need to be updated as there were screws we and nuts that we ended up figuring out ourselves. Better instructions would have allowed us to install even faster because part of the time was spend looking for the reason bumper wasn't coming off.

Can't wait to use my newly installed hitch. Thanks!!!

I like the product. Josh from etrailer was very helpful! I install it myself and save a couple hundred if I bring it to a shop for install. It was installed on a 2006 Cayenne. You would have to trim your bumper to get the hitch to stick out. Overall I’m very satisfied with my purchase. I have not connected the wiring for the tail/turn/brake lights module yet. It’s going to be use for bike rack for now anyway.

2010 Audi Q7

Installation is pretty straight forward and easy. It took me around 3 hours to complete the whole installation. It could have been a lot less if I had electric or pneumatic tools.

2014 Audi Q7

The YouTube video from etrailer was great, it help me put my hitch on the Audi without no background on mechanic with the help of my 12 years son. I plan to use it for the bike rack
Thank you guys for the product

Very easy to install - looks and works great! Much more attractive than the stock unit.

Nicely made and heavy duty. But pushing the bumper up like 1/4 inch. So make a dent on the bumper.
And a chain hookup is to deep. And sticking out on the side like big ears. So hard to mount the wiring harness.
Bottom line. It is BAD design.
I end to buy a use oem.

The Curt trailer hitch is super easy to install. Haven't towed anything with it yet. But it's definitely a solid hitch and I don't foresee any problems towing a trailer. I spoke with Dena on the phone and she handled a return and was a huge help in finding what I was looking for. She also followed up to check on the installation. Top notch customer service!

2005 Porsche Cayenne

Took me half a day to install, but I'm in no hurry. The cutout for the plastic fascia on my 2005 Porsche Cayenne needed to be 4 x 8 inches.

2005 Porsche Cayenne

2005 Porsche Cayenne S - Easy bolt on solution, did it in 2 hours, nothing particularly tricky.. used a cutting wheel on the plastic to trim around hitch area while the bumper was off. other than that, it was totally straight forward. instructions are adequate, shipping was fast, and most importantly, i save $2200 by not taking it to the dealer. what a joke what they try to to charge.

OMG! It was much easier than I thought it was going to be. I received a quote of $1400.00 from my dealer to install one. It only took me 2.5 hours to install along with the wiring harness.
Just watch the videos, if one is provided for your make and model and go for it!!

2004 Porsche Cayenne

Fitment was perfect on a 2004 Porsche Cayenne Turbo. The bolts provided did not fit (wrong thread size), but the OEM bolts were fine. The bumper cover required trimming, I used a die-cutter air tool. The finished product came out looking extremely clean, like a factory fit... and was significantly more affordable than the OEM Porsche hitch.

Outstanding, solidly built and has carried a KLR650 and some 250.dirt bikes

Product arrived in a timely manner, great price point. This is the third hitch and wiring kit I have purchased form The help videos made it clear how to install hitch and wiring kits. I am a very satisfied customer and will returning here for the next one.

2006 Volkswagen Touareg

I ordered this receiver hitch for my 2006 VW touareg. It is very durable and good quality! Only recommendation would be to have some help with starting the bolts for the installation, it can be heavy to hold and try to put the bolts in when you're by yourself. (It can be done though as I did). I look forward to putting the hitch to use!

Very good product but the fit wasn't perfect. It bolted up no issues, and installation was pretty much like the video. However when putting the bumper cover back on the 2" hitch receiver hits the fascia a bit. That made it very difficult to re-screw in the lower 4 bolts of the bumper fascia without bending the metal support (sheet metal) that the lower fascia bolts back into.

2009 Volkswagen Touareg

Packaged great! Very easy to install, I have taken the front bumper off. That helped me when taking the rear bumper off. I knew what to look for. I can not stress enough how easy this was to install!! The manufacture bumper came off no problems and the hitch looks great! Sorry I did not think to take a picture.... I guess I completed the job to quick! Save yourself some money and buy this and do it yourself. I spent around $***. The local hitch installer wanted almost $500.

2010 Volkswagen Touareg

Everything about it is good. It fit perfect. Just a tiny bit of surface rust starting after a year in salty Michigan in the receiver area where paint had been slightly rubbed off. Nothing that wouldn't happen on any hitch.

Not only is this hitch a great product, is a great company. I work in customer support and I must say this is the best customer support I have ever seen. I ordered this hitch Friday night and it shipped Saturday. I received an email from literally an hour after the hitch arrived with a link to an installation video which made installation a breeze. The video was very detailed. Do not hesitate to order any of your towing products from this company.
Thank you,

Great product and price. It shipped free and fast, I had it within a week of ordering, and installed it that weekend. The “How To Install” video provided by eTrailer was very helpful, and I was able to instal it on my own without issue. It was very detailed, and I appreciated the the video explaining the various nut/bolt sizes so I could make sure I had the right tools ahead of time.

2004 Volkswagen Touareg

My husband install this product on our 2004 Touareg in less than 1 hour by himself. We are very pleased with this product considering the dealer wanted a $1000 and they were not sure if they could do it. We ordered the product for standard delivery but the company upgraded are shipping for free and we received the product in two days. It was great to acutally receive something free during hard economic times. We received emails right after to let us know our order was received and additional email letting us know the product was shipped. Thanks etrailer!!!

2006 Porsche Cayenne

Cost effective alternative to Vehicle manufacturers product. I did not install it myself, as it can be labor intensive and w/o the right tools or knowledge you can cause damage to body panels. Still after paying a body/ mechanical shop the $200 to install it, it was worth it and less expensive than a factory unit.

  • Is it Difficult to Install the Curt Class III Hitch on Volkswagen Touareg
The only issue that I am aware of with this hitch is the relative complexity of the installation. The install actually is not very difficult, but the rear bumper cover and taillight assemblies need to be removed which tends to frighten some folks. The hitch includes the 12mm bolts, if your Touareg requires the 14mm bolts, it is perfectly acceptable to use the existing bolts that held the bumper beam in place.

  • Difficulty of Installing the Curt Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver, # 13220 on a 2010 Audi Q7
I was an English and Literature professor a few years back so I know that academia can produce modern day renaissance men and women capable of installing a trailer hitch. With that said, the instructions state that the estimated install time for the Curt Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver, # 13220, is 3 hours (90 minutes for a pro). We have a scale of difficulty for installing trailer hitches. It is a 10-based scale with 1 being equivalent to attaching two legos together and 10 being quantum...

  • Why Does Curt Trailer Hitch Have Lower Rating Than Towing Capacity of 2006 Porsche Cayenne
Usually when a trailer hitch capacity doesn't quite match up to the limits of the vehicle it's designed to fit, it's because it's also a fit for other vehicles that have a different tow rating. I wish I had a better answer for you, but the Curt Class III Trailer Hitch # 13220 does list a 6,000 pound towing capacity and I can't recommend going over this limit. These hitches do likely have a safety margin in place with regards to their listed ratings (which I think you alluded to), but...

The rear fascia of your 2015 Audi Q7 will need to be trimmed so that it can be reinstalled after the install of the Curt Hitch part # 13220. There are many possible ways of making the cuts in the plastic appearance panel, including tin snips, a utility knife with a fresh blade or a Dremel tool. Your best bet would be to use whichever tool you feel most comfortable with. The cuts you make in the panel are meant to allow the hitch to pass through it. I don't have a template for you to use,...
