Tekonsha Prodigy iD Bluetooth Brake Controller

Bluetooth Synchronization

Tekonsha Prodigy iD Bluetooth Brake Controller App Sync

The Tekonsha Prodigy iD is all about choices. That's why it is designed to work with both a dash-mounted Bluetooth knob and the Tekonsha EDGE mobile app, which you can easily download and use to control the settings. The knob is great for keeping the manual override at your fingertips for sway control or emergencies, while the app makes it easy to change and save your settings.

The two are wirelessly connected and synced with Bluetooth, so whatever change you make on one will appear on the other. This means that you don't need to have the app open the whole time you're towing; you can put in your settings and then close the app, and the settings will transfer to the knob. And of course, the full menu is always available in the dash knob as well. You can access it by just turning the spring-loaded knob clockwise and pressing and holding the LED display to select.

Tekonsha Prodigy iD Bluetooth Brake Controller Dash Mounted Knob

The control knob mounts seamlessly into your dash, giving you a clean, from-the-factory look. When you've completed your install, the knob is all you will see.

Full Customization

Whether you're using the control knob or the app, the Tekonsha Prodigy iD gives you all the options you need to adapt to each towing trip and each trailer in an easy-to-use menu, including:

2 Braking Modes

Like most brake controllers on the market today, the Tekonsha Prodigy iD is equipped with proportional braking. This is perfect for highway driving and everyday towing. But uniquely, this brake controller also comes with time-delayed braking for off-roading adventures or towing over rough terrain or in adverse weather conditions. You don't have to choose between the two; you get both, so you're ready to tow anywhere.

Proportional Braking

What is proportional Braking

Proportional braking means that your trailer brakes mimic your tow vehicle's brakes. If you slam on the brakes in your vehicle, your trailer brakes will activate with the same intensity; if you brake lightly, your trailer brakes lightly too. The trailer's braking is in proportion to your vehicle's braking. This saves wear and tear on the tires and the brakes on both your vehicle and trailer. Proportional braking is ideal in most towing situations.

Time-Delayed Braking

What is time-delayed braking

Time-delayed braking means that when your trailer brakes are activated, they follow a preset pattern every time. The brakes are applied with a predetermined amount of power after a set amount of time, regardless of how hard you hit the brakes in your tow vehicle. If you use this mode for everyday towing, you could sometimes get more or less braking power than you need for the situation, resulting in an uncomfortable push/pull sensation as well as uneven wear on your brakes and tires over time.

That said, time-delayed braking can be just what you need for off-roading or overlanding with a trailer, towing over rough terrain, or in adverse weather because of the control it gives you over your trailer independent of what your tow vehicle's doing. You can set it to a lower amount of braking power in icy conditions or on a slick, muddy slope to keep your trailer from braking too hard, or set the braking power higher if you're on a steep descent and want to be sure the trailer's momentum doesn't push your vehicle forward. If you need the option, the Tekonsha Prodigy iD is ready for you.

Braking Output

On both the app and the dash-mounted knob, you can set your braking output level anywhere between 1 and 10, in increments of 0.5. This will control how much force the brake controller sends to the trailer brakes when activated. If you have multiple trailers or you're hauling an empty trailer one way and a fully loaded one on the way back, it's quick and easy to adjust the brake controller. You want to set the braking power as high as it will go without locking up the trailer brakes.

Choose between 3 different levels of boost or turn boost off. Boost is perfect for towing heavy loads when you need more umph to bring your trailer to a stop. Your tow vehicle doesn't need that much power to brake in time, but your heavy trailer does.

Depending on the level of boost, your trailer brakes can start at either 13 percent or 25 percent of the set braking output. What this means is that, instead of starting at 0, the brakes will start at 25 percent and get to 100 percent sooner. This keeps the trailer from pushing your tow vehicle forward.

If your trailer weighs less than your tow vehicle, no boost is needed. But, if you want your trailer to lead the braking, you can select level B1.

Boost Levels:

Approximate Gross Trailer Weight Boost Level Increase in Initial Power Output
Less than tow vehicle GVW B1 13%
Equal to tow vehicle GVW B1 or B2 13% or 25%
Up to 25% more than tow vehicle GVW B2 or B3* 25%
Up to 40% more than tow vehicle GVW B3* 25%

*Both B2 and B3 offer a 25-percent boost in initial power. But the braking curve for B3 is more aggressive than that of B2. This means that, even though you will start out with the same intensity when using these boost levels, you will get an overall more aggressive braking experience with the higher level. So if you use B3, you will reach maximum braking sooner than if you use B2.

Turn on reverse mode to temporarily deactivate the boost, allowing you to back up the trailer at your campsite or in a parking lot. Reverse mode will automatically turn itself off after 3 minutes.

Brake Type

If you have multiple trailers or anticipate getting a new one down the road, it's great to have a brake controller that works with both types of brakes. Simply select electric or electric-over-hydraulic in the menu.

Save Your Settings

Get on the road faster by saving your settings. With the app, you can add and store a trailer with all its presets so it's ready to go when you are. This is perfect for a fleet when you don't want to be changing the settings back and forth every time you swap trailers. You'll have the ideal settings waiting for you.

Use the passcode to lock the iD brake controller to your phone and ensure you're the only one who can connect to it. If you forget your passcode, you can easily reset it from the control knob to the original 123456 code and then make a new one in the app.

Tech Support

The LED display on the dash-mounted knob provides easy-to-read diagnostics and alerts as you're towing so you can address problems as they arise. Turn to the app for full support: you can troubleshoot, contact customer service, learn about safe towing practices, and find product information on the brake controller.

If you want a brake controller that has it all, this is the product for you.

Seamless, Out-of-the-Way Installation

The Tekonsha Prodigy iD comes in 2 pieces: the main unit and the control knob. Because the only part that you need to be able to access is the control knob, the main unit can be mounted out of sight and out of the way. You don't have to worry about dinging your knee on a bulky brake controller or interfering with your vehicle's lower airbags.

Tekonsha Prodigy iD LED Dash Knob

The dash-mounted control knob can be installed in any convenient spot that's easy for you to see and access. This can be a blank switch panel or wherever there's space on your dashboard. The knob is designed to mount seamlessly into your dash for a clean, from-the-factory look.

When deciding where to mount the knob, keep in mind that it needs to be horizontally level and parallel with the direction of travel so that the inertia sensor can work correctly. It can't be more than 20 degrees off-center. To make your install easier, remove the panel you'll be mounting the knob in and use the included drill template. Before you do any drilling, be sure there's room behind the dash for the entire knob to install, including the part you don't see!

Insert the mounting collar into the panel and assemble the knob piece by piece according to the directions. Be careful not to touch the electrical contacts, as this could damage the device.

Tekonsha Prodigy iD Brake Controller Main Unit

Once the knob is mounted, you'll want to find a good place to install the main unit. The main unit can be positioned at any angle or position. Your only restriction is the plug-in cable between the main unit and the knob; you want to be sure they'll reach each other before screwing anything into place.

Tekonsha Prodigy iD Brake Controller Wiring Harness

To complete the installation, you will need to hardwire the included wiring harness to your vehicle or, for a plug-and-play install, a vehicle-specific wiring adapter (sold separately) is available for most newer trucks and SUVs.

Note: If a custom brake-control wiring adapter is not available for your vehicle, one of the following will be required: 20-amp circuit breaker (9506P - sold separately) for 2- to 4-brake applications or 30-amp circuit breaker (38630 - sold separately) for 6- to 8-brake applications

Once all connections are made, securely mount the box using the included zip-ties. Do not zip-tie the box to wiring or cables that can shift as you drive and don't have it touching any carpeting, as this will not allow the module to cool properly.

For assistance in properly wiring the Prodigy iD, please refer to the diagram below:

Tekonsha Prodigy iD Wiring Diagram

Once the brake controller is all set up, all that's left to do is get the Tekonsha EDGE app on your smartphone. Download the app from Google Play or the App Store and create an account. Get in range of the brake controller and the app will connect. From there, the app will walk you through creating and saving your trailer profile.

Installation Accessories

See's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake-control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Average Customer Rating:  2.0 out of 5 stars   (1 Customer Reviews)

Mount the digital LED control knob of this brake controller seamlessly into your dash while the main unit installs out of sight. Control your tow settings and save multiple trailer profiles from your phone with Bluetooth.

The installation on my 2022 Ford Explorer of the LED knob was not very easy. Even though I had looked up the measurements of the back side of the LED knob before I ordered, I couldn't find a good spot to install it without tearing the entire dash apart. It was just too long. Ended up installing it on the cover of the fuse panel. Not the desired spot since I can't read the LED. Thank goodness for the bluetooth part of the controller. I was able to set it up using the percentages since the knob was not level and I presumed the sensor for the electronic portion of the braking is located.
While installing the LED lens fell off the front of the knob. I put it back on but there was no registration mark and discovered I installed it upside down after following the troubleshooting instructions for the blank screen. I had power but no readout. All was good after flipping it.
Applying the brakes manually by turning the outside ring of the LED housing doesn't seem to work as it should. It only applies a small percentage of braking compared to what I have the controller set to. Again, thank goodness for the bluetooth to my phone to see all of this.
If I had it to do over again I would have installed an inexpensive, flat universal controller that just uses a percentage setup that I can see and doesn't require a 'cheat cheat' to figure out what the readout means. I still may do that.
