V-Bar Icebreakers

V-Bar Icebreakers

The V-shaped studs (also known as icebreakers, spikes, or cleats) that are built into these twist-link tire chains bite into ice, providing superior grip for a safer ride on ice-covered roads.

Installation

1. Drape the chain over the tire, making sure that the V-bars are facing out.

2. Drive forward about 1/4 of a tire revolution. (You can also lay the chain out and then drive onto it.)

3. Fasten the ends of the chain together.

4. Use the cam tensioning devices that are built into the side chain to tighten. Do this by inserting the flat end of the included wrench into the slot on each cam and twisting it.

5. Drive forward a bit and tighten the chain as needed.

You can use rubber or chain adjusters (sold separately) to increase the tension on the chains for a tighter fit.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Video Transcript for Titan Chain Snow Tire Chains with Cams Review

Adam: Hi everyone. Adam, etrailer.com. Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Titan chain, snow tyre chains. So this does have a V bar style link, which is going to be the more aggressive style of your snow tyre chains. This is going to wear down a little bit more than some of your square shaped links, but it is going to give you superior traction to all of those. It may be a little rougher ride, but this is definitely going to get you out of those snowy or icy situations.

So this is going to be a ladder-pattern style tyre chain. Also, it is going to be made of a low carbon steel construction. It's going to last a decently long time and resist against rust and corrosion. Whenever you have these on, it's probably going to be soft on the roads. So having a nice, solid metal is definitely going to help it wear away. So, these do come in a pack of two, which have a decently sturdy canvas bag.

So for your all wheel drive and four wheel drive applications, you can just grab two sets on etrailer.com and it's going to be the same exact installation process on all four of your tyres. So the first thing we're going to want to do is lay out our chains and make sure there's no kinks in our links. Also, something to note, we want to make sure that the V-Bar is going to be facing out away from our tyre, and the open end here is going to be facing out as well. Once all that's done, we can try to grab the middle of our chains and drape them over our tyre. We'll make sure we get it nice and even. So now that we're back here, we're going to take our spare links here and our hook.

We're going to find a chain. I want to do the second closest, and then we're going to go around front and complete the connection. So around front, we're going to take our metal portion here, put it through a link and bend it over like so, it connects it to our spare link here. Now we can take our cam tensioner tool, put it into place and rotate this around to get that desired tightness. We don't have to do all of them, but I am going to do two here. We do have about four on this kit.

That should be pretty tight. So these cams did do a pretty good job at getting these chains nice and tight. And I only use two of them. There's two more that I could tighten down if we needed to get a little bit tighter, but if you want that added security and comfort, you can go on etrailer.com and purchase some of these rubber tensioners. And all you really need to do is just have the hooks facing out away from your tyres and then go on a diamond or star-pattern just across from each other to get them installed. That's something that you would like to have with your tyre chains. They don't come with them, but, we do sell them here at etrailer.com. Well, everyone, thanks for tuning in and taking a look at Titan chain, snow tyre chains..

Well made product. Had to be back ordered but staff were attentive and the follow through was excellent. The chains are aggressive and appear to be well suited for my needs traveling in remote off road conditions. The only suggestion I have is to include installation instructions for those not mechanically inclined. I would recommend this product.

These chains are as chunky and sturdy as they look. I haven't tested them on snow yet but I think they will be fine. They are reasonably intuitive to fit, but be sure to try them out before you need them!

Review from a similar V-Bar Ladder with Cam in Tire Chains

For a 2019 Ram 1500 Classic with 4x4 with stock 275/60 R20 tires. Summary: Good on Rear Tires NOT on Front Tires. They fit good on the rear tires but I do not recommend for the front tires. Unless I'm installing them wrong there is not enough clearance between the inner front sidewall and suspension components (Steering Knuckle and Upper Control Arm). It would be nice to have on both front and rear axles though.

Comments
Thank you for your review! I saw the problem you mentioned in your review and looked it up in the owners manual for a 2019 Ram 1500 Classic. Where they talk about the use of tire chains, they only recommend that tire chains be used on the rear axle tires only. Just wanted to pass along what I found out as a reason for TC2828CAM not fitting the front tires. Hopefully this helps!

Review from a similar V-Bar Ladder with Cam in Tire Chains

They are great chains but you have to, have to, have to, I can’t express it enough, buy the rubber bungee cord hooks to make it tighter and keep the chains on, I tried without it at first and any speed over 8mph and they might fall off, I have a 2018 F150 and with both products I can drive up to 35 to 40 mph without any issues even though I think that speed is not recommended, I just wanted to see what would happen. It’s a Texan thing, I’ve used these in Colorado and New Mexico and are perfect

Review from a similar V-Bar Ladder with Cam in Tire Chains

I have used chains in the past without tightening cams and aways struggled with getting the chain tight enough. These chains with the cams are a joy to use. The went on easily and tightened up with out a problem. I used these chains with all weather tires and had no difficulties while plowing 18 inches of heavy wet snow. Prior to using the chains I was getting stuck in the same snow. We'll worth the money and etrailer provided great service.

Just put the 4821 dually chains with cams on my truck and I'm impressed with the ease of installation. Tested them out on an icy hill and snow on top too...AWESOME CHAINS! They look as though they'll hold up well. Thank you Nicole R. at etrailer for your assistance. ;)

Review from a similar V-Bar Ladder with Cam in Tire Chains

Chains are perfect, mounted and tested, getting my snowplow ready for winter. I only had to cut a few links off of the ends for a perfect fit, I made sure the v-bars were all pointing out. I am anxious for our first snowfall. I am happy with all of my purchases from e-trailer

Perfect!! I wish I had bought these years ago. Hills and tight spots are not a problem anymore!

Great looking set of chains!!! Put one on my Toyota 4x4 to see how they fit. It was much easier to put on, and that cam system works great an love those V-bars. I think they will do a great job for my truck and on our mountain roads.

Review from a similar V-Bar Ladder with Cam in Tire Chains

I live on an unpaved road 7 miles in high on a mountain which ices up nightly. Winter starts here mid October and ends mid May. These ice chains are needed to get me home a few nights a week during the winter months. They fits as described. I questioned Angela at customer service if these chains wold fit “E” load tires. She told me they would and they do. I like etrailer as my goto accessory store for my HD Sierra, Tundra and Tahoe Z71. The videos are very informative except I haven’t been able to install the chains without moving the vehicle. I need to roll it either forward or back to complete the install. Please see photos. Thank You for your Professionalism at etrailer

Never used chains before. They exceeded my expectations. Easy to put on, tighten and take off. Amazing traction for plowing deep snow with my F150. I highly recommend these chains.

Comments
These chains are well worth the money. Before I put a set on my rear tires of my F150, I would get stuck even in four wheel drive. I would have to get out and dig myself out. I used this chains at the end of last season and this year and havent gotten stuck yet.

Review from a similar V-Bar Ladder with Cam in Tire Chains

I bought 2 sets of these chains and love them! In 2 feet of snow the truck was un- stoppable on the lake with just the set on the back. I didn't have enough room between the tire and front bumper to put them on the front. They were very easy to install and with the cam adjusters they tighten up very well! Ice Fishing season was over and I hooked my 6,000# ice shack up and to be safe we used 2 trucks together with these chains and plowed our way through 2 feet of pretty wet snow and ice. Very impressed with the traction that they give you.

Review from a similar V-Bar Ladder with Cam in Tire Chains

Great chains. The grip is unbeatable on dirt roads. The multiple cam system is awesome and simple! I'll never buy anything other than these multi-cam chains. I use them on the old 7.3L dually for snow plowing and/or hauling anything up the road to cabin in the winter. Tips: Carry an old yoga mat or two in the truck to lay on for getting underneath and behind the tires. I summer I use the mats for working under the truck work when on dirt or in shop. Have your tools with you on the plow job! Do not drive these chains on paved roads with this; the "V" grip will get ground down and/or a link will break. Take the time to take them off for paved roads, and put back on back on dirt, it'll save these chains!!! One season plowing review: They held up great... That means is nothing broke that couldn't be fixed by me. I never used the front chains, except when my back chain broke (outer link over main cam system), I took it off and used one front chain on a single back tire, to get me through that days job. worked fine! replaced outer link when I got home (see product link below) On dually set, outer locking link broke; the link one that goes over the cam mechanism. I got my replacements at a local tire shop for less than $1. I bought a few, knowing this would likely happen again. Tools you may consider to have to get these on: pliers, vice grips, big flat head screw driver, and a hammer to smash it down after it's on. Think chain size PAPER CLIP. Keep these on hand, and the tools in your truck's kit to replace these on the job. YES, various chains bent and a few came off several times infer bending, and that's exactly what I'd expect from a chain used for heavy duty plowing. Sometimes chains just come off... that was my fault for not retightening several times as I plow. Easy to check the cams for tightening. Remember... Keep the cam tool in the tool box ON TRUCK. I have all four of my cam tools on hand. Every year after plowing season ends, I lay my chains on a steel plate and go through every link... using a large hand held sledge and various hand tools for bending/smashing chain links back into position, or replace as needed. I found about 8 or nine outer retainers that were starting to open a bit (see pic of a replacement new one)... some close to really opening up; so I bent them back into a closed position. Everyone should be doing this every year with your chains. It's not uncommon for the the outer chains clips to open up gradually over time. Start each season by inspecting these, smashing them down with a hand sledge as needed. One item to have in a plow truck since I learned a lesson last year... bolt cutters. Big and heavy to keep in a truck, but would have saved my ass last year from changing out rear dually chains to a single front chain, if I could've just snipped the cross tire chain off; who's outer link had come off. I'll be throwing that into my "tool kit" this year.

Review from a similar V-Bar Ladder with Cam in Tire Chains

Just got my chains in the mail the other day, very fast shipping and delivery was excellent. I used the chains for the first time today on my NEW truck and one of the links broke causing one of the cleated ladders to come apart and scratch up the paint on my quarter panel around the wheel well. This all happened in about the first 10 feet that my truck moved and the very first time these chains had been used. I am happy with the service I have received in the past from etrailer and this time has been no different. Just disappointed in the quality of these chains.

2018 Chevy Silverado 3500 TC2828CAM w/ TCMA3 Rubbers (Heavy Trucks) Just received items and installed 1st time after watching video. Took 15 min in garage for dry run. Installed as video directed. Was an easy install considering that I am 65 yr old. Decided on these instead of cables for their longevity and safety. Don’t want a failure while driving. Very happy and impressed with these.

Review from a similar V-Bar Ladder with Cam in Tire Chains

I ordered these chains to help negotiate several miles of unmaintained dirt roads to my hunting camp. Winter conditions will range from solid ice to deep snow to rutted mud. I believe that these chains will handle all of it. Fit up and installation is simple. The cams really help to get a sung fit. etrailer's web site made the selection of the correct size easy. Just be sure to check your owner's manual to verify chains like this are appropriate for your vehicle. Overall, I would recommend these to anyone needing aggressive traction on variable road conditions.

Review from a similar V-Bar Ladder with Cam in Tire Chains

Great chains, used 4 of them very hard last year. I broke one of the cross chains on one side which I can repair but have been rough on them. They make all the difference for 1-2 feet of snow. The cam locking system is really nice. They fit the very biggest tire for that chain with 1-2 links left. Wouldn’t go out of recommended size.

Review from a similar V-Bar Ladder with Cam in Tire Chains

Received the chains quicker than expected. Easy to install in the garage on a dry warm day.! Should be reasonably easy to install when needed in the snow. FORD recommends no chains for your pick up. However, etrailer demonstrated that they can be used, I appreciate the extra effort they went through. Always need chains in the mountains during hunting season.

I have a couple options for tire chains for your 2016 Polaris Ranger UTV. It depends on what situation you want them for. My personal favorite is the Titan Chain Alloy Tire Chain # TC1545 with its diamond pattern and relatively easy to install design. The diamond pattern has more tire coverage than your traditional ladder style chains, so it is great with maneuvers like sharp turns or quick stops.
