Video Transcript for Detailed Breakdown of the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly

Speaker 1: Today we're going to look at the Dexter never lube trailer hub and drum assembly for 8,000 lb Dexter 50 millimeter never lube axles with the eight on six and a half inch bolt pattern. This hub and drum assembly will include the 50 millimeter cartridge bearing, the bearing retainers to keep it in there, the grease cap, the wheel studs and you notice the lug nuts are also included. This is designed to work with both electric, let me turn it around for you. Both electric and hydraulic brakes. It is for use with the 12 and a quarter inch by three and three eighths inch brake assemblies. Application again is the 8,000 lb Dexter 50 millimeter never lube axles. Capacity on this one is 4,000 lbs.

So when this is used with one on the other side of the axle, it will meet the 8,000 lb capacity of the axle. The drum dimension we're going to measure here. Inside diameter is right at 12 and a quarter inches. Overall width is right at 4 inches. Again, the bolt pattern is an eight on six and a half inch bolt pattern. The grease cap that it comes with is a 3.355 inch outer diameter.

It fits right in there. The wheel stud size is nine sixteenths by eighteen. The lug nuts include eight of the nine sixteenths by eighteen lug nuts. That should do it for the review on the Dexter never lube trailer hub and drum assembly for 8,000 lb Dexter 50 millimeter never lube axles with the eight on six and a half inch bolt pattern.

Dexter discontinues these 7200lb neverlube axle parts but etrailer has them. Good support, I called to verify bearing cartridges were the same and got a new hub, drum, bearing assembly that bolted right up, complete with all new snap rings, axle nut, even the torque to 145 label. Thanks etrailer

Always the correct part super quick shi pping!

Well I ordered it in July when broke down in Buffalo. It was to be a spare part. It came. The neighbor took it off the porch and kept it. In August we returned and opened up the box. It was 11 bottles of Tea Shampoo/conditioner. I called etrailer and talked to Shawnee. She sent another hub assembly and arranged for UPS to pick up the hair products. The new hub arrived.......in a damaged box. The hub was there but the loose hardware was missing out the hole in the side of the box. I emailed etrailer and they sent the hardware items. They arrived today. Their response was quick. It didn't cost me anything extra. Of course, this was messed up and I'm happy I wasn't broke down awaiting for the parts. I think the etrailer part was good except for the packing of the second shipment. I'm not so impressed with the freight company, UPS. The hub is 39 pounds and need additional box reinforcement.

However, other orders in the past have come with no problems.

Nev-R-Lube bearings are very nerve racking. I'm so used to repacking and checking bearings annually these types of bearings worry me when traveling. So, after 10 years and 50,000 miles I decided to replace them. Etrailer had the best price on the hub and drum assembly, which was a no brainer. I have now had the new bearing on for a full year and 9,000 miles with no problems. RV bearings run cooler, braking is excellent. Installation was a breeze. Nev-R-Lube bearings are not one of my major concerns any longer.

We were going camping with friends at Carlyle lake. Two of these friends were Steve and Nancy. Nancy works at etrailer. On the way my breakaway brake was accidentally pulled by a piece of equipment in the back of the truck. I checked the main plug but not the breakaway. Needless to say by the time Igor there 50 miles my brakes and drums were toast. Steve got om the phone to Nancy and ordered me a new set. Nancy who was working picked them up and brought them to me the next day. Thank to them and Steve C. We had the brakes in a day and had them replaced and we are back rolling safely again. The product was an easy install from watching the video. Thanks again to my friends at etrailer. They are the greatest.

I was blown away! We are leaving for a trip in a few days and unfortunately just discovered an issue with the Dexter Auto adjust brakes. Etrailer said the parts should arrive in 2 days and I was doubtful. Sure enough, they arrived when they said! Very impressed!

by:

Professional and personal we had a few distractions but when all said and done Nathan came through. Airstream is going on the safely and with a new set of breaks and hub . Very HAPPY. And recommend them for All of your RV NEEDS!!??

by:

Everything went well. This is not the first drum I've gotten from you all for this axle but the spindle nuts are not the right size. My spindles have a 31mm outside diameter and the nuts that come with drum are much to small. I asked the agent if I had a choice and he said no.

  • How to Determine Correct Nev-R-Lube Bearing/Hub Assembly
From the pictures you sent in it looks like the inner diameter of your Nev-R-Lube bearing is about 2" which means you'd need the 50MM Nev-R-Lube Bearing for 8,000-lb Dexter Axles # 31-71-3. Aside from that you're basically just going to need to pull that bearing and measure the inside diameter to determine if the 50MM # 31-71-3, 42MM # 31-73-3, or 35MM # 31-72-3 bearing will best fit. The part 008-402-81 that you referenced finding somewhere else looks to be a hub assembly for a disc brake...

  • Can Dexter Nev-R-Lube Hubs Be Replaced with Oil Bath Hubs
The existing Dexter 8K Nev-R-Lube spindles on your trailer are designed specifically for the cartridge-style bearing that the corresponding Nev-R-Lube Hubs # 8-389-81UC3 use. The spindles themselves are uniquely sized for this purpose so unfortunately the hubs can't be replaced with standard hubs that use traditional inner and outer bearings, including oil-bath units like the Dexter 8K # 8-285-9UC3 that you referenced. The only way to switch to hubs like this would be to replace the entire...

  • Electric Brakes for 8,000 lb Dexter Hub and Drum
I believe you are asking about the correct electric brake size for the Dexter Hub and Drum Assembly # 8-389-81UC3. This hub and drum assembly is rated for 8,000 lbs and has a drum that measures 12-1/4" x 3-3/8" so the correct electric brake assembly would be the Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit # K23-532-533-00. These self-adjusting brakes measure 12" x 3-3/8" to fit securely in the drum, are also rated for 8,000 lb axles and fit a 4-bolt mounting flange. Just the brake shoes for these...

  • Dexter NeverLube Axle Hub # 8-389-81UC3 Recommendation
The only way the # 8-389-81UC3 is available is with the grease cap and lug nuts. Considering the cost of this hub and how much grease caps and lug nuts cost you wouldn't save much by not getting the hub with those items.

  • Replacement Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for Dexter 8-389-91
I spoke with my contact at Dexter and she informed me that the Dexter # 8-389-81UC3 on our site and the 8-389-91 on your trailer are essentially the same. Basically, the 8-389-91 usually refers to the the complete hub and drum assembly while the -81 part number is simply the hub/drum and cartridge. However, the Dexter # 8-389-81UC3 on our site actually includes the entire assembly, so in this particular case, the two part numbers are exactly the same. The # 8-389-81UC3 will fit perfectly...

  • Replacement Bearing for 8,000 Pound Dexter Nev-R-Lube Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly
For your Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - Nev-R-Lube # 8-389-81UC3, the correct 50mm bearing is indeed the Dexter # 31-71-3 product that you referenced in your question. This bearing is also used on 8,000 pound axles like what you have so there will be no fitment or capacity issues. This bearing has an inner diamter of 50mm and an outer diameter of 84mm. I have attached a short video demonstration on this product that you can also check out.

  • Using Bearing Numbers or Spindle Measurements to Find a Replacement Hub for a Trailer
The definitive way to determine the correct replacement hub is to go by the inner and outer bearing numbers stamped into the sides of the bearings. With these numbers I can determine the best hub or hub and drum assembly for your trailer. Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 8-389-81UC3 is for Nev-R-Lube axles that use cartridge bearings. This one uses # 31-71-3 but you won't find that number stamped in it. If can be identified by its dimensions. The inner diameter is 50mm. The other way to...
