Features to know about

Back Up Smoothly Without Brake Lockup: Free-Backing Hydraulic Design

When you’re reversing down a ramp or backing into a tight spot, these free-backing hydraulic drum brakes make it easy. The fall-away shoe design keeps the brakes from engaging in reverse, even when your surge actuator is active. You still get full braking power moving forward, but the extra spring in the shoe lets the drum turn freely when backing up for smooth, unhindered movement.

Reliable Braking for Heavy Loads: 12" x 2" Assemblies for 5.2K–7K Axles

Each assembly measures 12" diameter x 2" wide and is built to handle axle ratings of 5,200 lbs, 6,000 lbs, and 7,000 lbs. That gives you dependable braking strength for a range of heavy-duty applications. They mount using a standard 5-bolt flange and fit wheel sizes from 14-1/2" to 16-1/2".

Built to Last in Real-World Conditions: Automotive-Grade Friction and E-Coated Backing Plates

The pads are fully bonded—not riveted—to the shoes for long life and more braking torque. Automotive-grade friction material is molded for an exact fit and circularly ground with tapered edges to help prevent cracking or crumbling that can lead to lockup. The E-coated backing plates resist wear and corrosion so the assemblies stay reliable through tough use.

Tested and Certified for Safety: QAI and CSA Approved

These brake assemblies meet CSA certification standards for safety and quality. They’ve been tested by QAI under real operating conditions to confirm consistent stopping performance. The friction material is also SAE-N certified, so it meets environmental regulations in both the U.S. and Canada while delivering strong, dependable braking performance.

DIY-Friendly Setup: Pre-Matched Left and Right Assemblies

Each set includes 25 left-hand (driver’s side) and 25 right-hand (passenger’s side) brake assemblies, ready to pair with most standard hub-and-drum setups including Dexter, Lippert (LCI), and AL-KO. Fine-tooth adjuster gears allow precise manual tuning, while included plugs keep dirt out of the adjustment holes for cleaner service over time.

Video Transcript for Hydraulic Brake Kit Feature Review

Speaker 1: Today we're gonna be taking a look at the hydraulic brake kit U-Servo 00:00:02 free backing 12 inch left and right hand brake assemblies for five and a half thousand to seven thousand pounds. That's gonna be part number AKFBBRK-7.So here's what our brake assembly's gonna look like. The biggest benefit to our brake assembly here is that it is an entire assembly. We're not gonna have to worry about getting the hardware kit, a wheel cylinder, or anything else. As well as putting on the pads, they are hydraulic brake assemblies, which means they're gonna work with surge-type brake actuators. What's nice about these assemblies is that they have a free backing design. And what that means is, it's gonna let you back up without engaging the brakes, even if the actuator is activated. The fall-away brake shoe is only gonna anchor on the drum when the brakes are engaged, as the trailer is moving forward. The pads are gonna be fully bonded into the shoes and not riveted, which means that they're gonna give it a longer life and more of a bite on those brakes. The tapered edge at the bottom of our pad is gonna help prevent any kind of cracking and crumbling that can lead to a mechanical lock-up.Our brake assemblies are gonna have a fine tooth adjustment gear, and that's gonna allow us to fine tune our brakes, but it is a manual adjustment, so we are gonna have to check our brakes and adjust them periodically. There is gonna be a plug on the back that's gonna help keep out all the dirt and debris from getting inside, and this is right where we're gonna make our adjustments at.Now, the mounting flange bolt pattern is gonna be a five bolt, and it's gonna fit wheels 14 1/2, 15, 16, and 16 1/2 inch. Our brake assembly is gonna work with axles that are rated at 5,200, 6,000, and 7,000 pounds. Now, this is gonna include the left and right hand assemblies, so to start out, we're gonna go ahead and remove our drums so we can pull off this cap.

Just take a rubber mallet, and we're gonna tap it until it can come off. Put the cap aside for now. Now, on the top of the nut here, we're gonna clean some of the grease off, because there's gonna be a retaining clip that's holding it in place. Just take a shop towel and wipe off some of the excess grease so we can find that retaining clip. You're gonna want to grab a flathead screwdriver. There's gonna be a tab that's gonna be in between the two channels here, on the nut itself.

We're gonna bend that tab down, so that we can actually turn the nut and take it off. Now, you want to be careful, because our brake assembly is not gonna come with a retaining nut or washer, so you want to keep this hardware so we can re-install it.Next, we're gonna grab a pair of channel locks and we're gonna grab the nut and just loosely turn it so it'll unlock it. Then we can take it off by hand the rest of the way. Then we can pull off that retaining plate. We're gonna pull this off and set it aside, and then if you need to, again, grab a flathead screwdriver and we're gonna pull that washer off that's right behind it. So we're gonna grab the back of the hub, slowly pull it back, and we'll set the hub aside, as well.So what's gonna be holding our assembly in place is gonna be these nuts right here.

There's gonna be a total of five of them going around the axle shaft. We're gonna be using a 9/16 socket to remove them. Now, again, you want to hold onto the hardware that comes off, because our new brake assembly is not gonna come with hardware. And with the hardware removed, we are gonna have one last point that we're gonna have to pull off before we can pull the assembly out, and that's gonna be right here, where the brake line is actually attached. You need to tilt the assembly out so you can get a wrench in there to loosen that fitting. So we can take our new assembly. We're gonna slide it over the studs. Then we can reinstall those lock washers and nuts back in place.Just gonna put these in there hand tight for now, and then we can come back and tighten them all down.

With all the bolts in hand tight, I'm gonna come back and I'm gonna torque them down.So with this brake assembly in place, we're gonna go ahead and repeat that for the other remaining positions. And that will finish up your look at the hydraulic brake kit for the left and right hand side. And that's gonna be part number AKFBBRK-7.

The brake components in a kit are a great idea... too bad they didn't include lock washers and nuts to complete the installation. Kind of like selling a rifle without any bullets. They could have at least suggested an optional nut package to go along with it and save me a trip to the hardware store.

I ordered and received 2 sets of brake assemblies (2 lefts / 2 rights). Even though the shipping department did an excellent job on packing, 1 left was damaged in shipping. I sent photos of the concealed damage. Christine got a replacement sent the next day. Great service. Thank you Christine for your prompt response.

I bought these to replace the original ones on my Master Tow tilt bed, tow dolly. The original hydraulic brakes would stay slightly engages after I applied the brakes and wouldn't release. The brake shoes were dragging and the hub would get so hot I couldn't put my hand on it. Well after replacing the brakes with these new ones everything works great and I couldn't be happier. I would highly recommend them ! They came in quickly and were very easy to install.

I wish you could provide for all my automotive part needs. Every aspect of this shopping experience has been amazing. Product application and actual images of parts, availability, shipping and tracking. You have done it all. My experience has been both by phone and online during this transaction and I'm thrilled with both. You will be my go-to for future trailer part shopping.

Trailer breaks are working great
by:
I would give it 5 stars for quality, but when the product arrived I noticed that the mounting hardware was not
Included
and the bolt removed from the old parts are different threads. I didn’t notice when purchasing that it stated I would need specific hardware kit. Off to the hardware store I go which is a 30 minute drive from our house.

I did a total rebuild of my boat trailer. I ordered nearly all of the parts from etrailer. New carpet for the bunks new brakes and backing plates as well as a new brake actuator. New wheel bearings and seals. This trailer is old a 1974 but all of the parts fit I was satisfied with all of the products I received and the timely manner in which they were delivered to my door I am very happy with the fine service I received a t trailer and the help and selecting the right parts thank you very much etrailer.
by:
My trailer is over 25 years old and my concern was if I was going to be able to get the right parts. Everthing was still the same as back then. Much easier to replace the whole Assembly as opposed to randomly replacing a part here and there. I now have a new trailer...well almost

Excellent perfect match for my 2005 Jayco Baja trailer. Easy peasy to install. To make it easier to get the brake line threaded in... start it prior to bolting it into place.

2003 Chevrolet Silverado
Got everything installed and after testing, brakes are working well. I have no major complaints. Price is good. I could have spent a few extra dollars for the galvanized backing plates but this is for a boat trailer that only gets towed 25 miles or so each way to a freshwater lake once or twice a week during the summer, so I went the cheap route.

A couple of notes: spend the 5 bucks on the accompanying hardware kit (nuts and washers). I didn't, figuring that I would just use the nuts and washers off of the old plates. Problem is that the bolts on the old plates were course thread and the bolts on these are fine thread. I had to go to about 4 stores to find fine threaded bolts in the right size. I would have saved myself a couple of hours on the install if I would have ordered the hardware from etrailer.

Second, on my trailer, two of the bolts were stalled with the bolt head on the outside of the axle with the nut on the inside of the plate. With these new plates, the bolts are not removable, which meant that I had to install two of the nuts with an open end wrench rather than an impact socket because there was not enough clearance between the nut when threaded onto the bolt and the axle. Not the end of the world and even if I knew that in advance I would have still purchased this same product. But it did end up taking an extra few minutes for each axle to install the plates, so it is something that I thought that I would note here.

Just a couple of quibbles that were specific to my trailer. But if I were to do it over again, I would still purchase.

I have ordered complete brake assemblies like these in the past for my 5th wheel. They are great and easy to install. No need to fight those springs and keepers that hole the brake shoes to the backing plate, (Pain) just remove the wheel and four bolts, install plate and wheel and adjust the brakes. Done in less than 30 min. a wheel. You save time and money! Great way to do your brakes and I like E-trailer's fast delivery.
