how to measure an rv awning

Solera Smart Arm awning dimensions

Programmable Power Awning

Solera Smart Arm Programmable Awning

The Solera Smart Arm is the first ever programmable awning for your trailer or RV. You can pre-set all of your add-on features and get your awning just how you want it with no more than the press of a button. The weatherproof control pad is integrated into the base of the right arm for easy access - no more climbing in and out of your RV to tweak with your awning.

Weatherproof Touchpad

Smart Arm Weatherproof Touchpad Controller

On top of making it convenient to extend and retract the awning, the touchpad gives you 1-touch control of all your add-on features. It's designed with a safety lock button to keep your settings and the awning where you want them. You have to unlock the touchpad before you can make any adjustments, so you won't have to worry about accidentally elbowing the controls.

Add-On Features

Smart Arm Wind Sensor Upgrade

The Wind Sensor upgrade (LC715123 - sold separately) protects the awning against wind damage. If strong wind is detected, the awning will automatically retract, giving you peace of mind if you're away from your campsite when bad weather hits. You can toggle between 3 different levels of wind sensitivity using the touchpad, or you can deactivate the wind sensor altogether. Just mount the sensor below the drive head on the awning arm and plug the wiring harness directly into the Smart Arm touchpad.

Smart Arm Infrared Security Sensor Upgrade

To take your awning lights to the next level, another cool add-on is the infrared security sensor (LC715124 - sold separately). When this sensor detects motion or heat, it will automatically turn the awning lights on. This is a great security feature, as well as a convenient backup if you're returning to your RV after dark and need some light to get inside. The sensor range is approximately 8' with a 180-degree radius from its mounting location and can be armed with the press of a button. Installation is one step: snap the unit into place on the bottom of the arm, just beneath the touchpad.

Auto Rain Dump

One thing that can quickly ruin your camping trip is a broken awning. It's not easy or cheap to replace, and you can't really enjoy your patio without one. A big hazard to a healthy awning is rain: water pools in the fabric, stretching it out and putting strain on the arms with extra weight it wasn't designed to hold. Next thing you know, the fabric rips - the arms snap - the whole awning comes crashing down, slamming against your RV and leaving you with a big and costly problem.

For traditional awnings, it's up to you to run out in the rain and lower one of the arms yourself so the water can run off. If you're away from your RV when it starts to rain, you can only hope your awning isn't damaged when you get back. This Solera awning solves this problem: it comes equipped with an automatic rain dump function. As soon as rainwater starts to pool in the fabric, one of the arms will automatically drop, giving your awning a pitched angle. The rainwater will then run off to one side, taking the pressure off the awning and your mind.

Adjust Arms for Best Shade

Solera Smart Arm awning manual pitch adjustment

It's hard to get your awning in just the right place to keep you in the shade all day, especially if you have one that's pretty high off the ground. Sometimes you need just a little slant to your awning to keep the sun out of your eyes. The manual pitch adjustment built into the arms of this Solera awning gives you that option. Simply pull on one of the arms at the friction joint to drop that corner. It comes down easily and holds itself there for as long as you need it. When it's time to retract your awning, there's no need to readjust it; the awning will slide back in no matter what pitch the arms are set at.

Durable Vinyl Fabric

Black Fade Solera Awning Fabric

The durable fabric of this awning holds up to the rigors of the outdoors. It's made of premium 13.5-oz vinyl, which is an upgrade over the 10-oz fabric used in many awnings. In addition, this fabric features heat-welded seams to prevent leaks. The fabric is cold-crack protected to -25 F, so it won't crack or degrade during cold weather.

Installation

Solera Smart Arm awning installation

An awning rail is required to anchor the fabric of the awning to the RV, and your first step will need to be installing one (LC715216 - sold separately) if you don't already have one on your RV. You will need a minimum of 2-1/2" between the awning rail and the top of the entry door. You'll also need 69" of open space on the RV wall - from the awning rail straight down - so that the wall-mounted brackets for the awning arms can be installed.

The roller tube comes with the awning fabric already mounted and attaches to the awning arms. The other side of the fabric slides into the awning rail on the RV. Then use the included self-tapping screws to secure the arms to the wall-mounted brackets. The awning drive motor wires to the Smart Arm touchpad, which can either be connected to your battery or wired directly into your RV.

  • Can Solera Smart Arm RV Awning Replace Manual Awning of Trailer
Hey Luke, yes the Solera Smart Arm RV Awning kit part # LC405523 can replace the manual awning you have currently. This will give you a powered, programmable awning that uses your campers 12 volt battery as a power source.

  • Is There A Complete 20' Awning Kit Available With Blue Fade Fabric
Hey Georges, We currently only offer a complete awning kit in blue fade in a 21' length # LC75FR. In a 20' length we have black fade # LCV000334969-362243 or white fade # LC405523. You can try seeing if Lippert offers a 20' blue fade kit though since they are our supplier for awnings and have a larger selection to choose from than we currently do.

  • Can Wider Awning Be Installed on Trailer
Hi John; an awning like the Solera XL 12V Power RV Awning # LC65FR does need to mount using your wall studs to be able to properly support the awning. It is possible to install a wider awning if you have the clearance but you also need to make sure you can hit the studs with your screws. Since it is just slightly wider you're probably going to have one arm that won't line up. If you want to replace it with the XL I would stick with the 20' # LCV000334969-362243.

  • Does the Wind Sensor for Solera Smart Arm RV Awnings Work w/ Solera Series 3000 Power Awnings?
Hey Mike. The Wind Sensor for Solera Smart Arm 12V Power RV Awnings item # LC715123 only works with smart awnings like the Solera Smart Arm 12V Power RV Awning item # LC405523. You would need to upgrade your Solera Series 3000 power awning to add the wind sensor. How wide is your awning and what color is it?

  • Can A Current Weather Guard For A 20 FT Awning Still Be Used If The Awning Is Replaced
If you are just wanting to replace your fabric then the rest of the awning assembly would remain the same so you could maintain your weather guard when the awning is rolled up. I recommend Item # LCV000334443. This is replacement awning fabric which would require the roller and arms be taken off the Camper/RV. The old fabric removed from the roller and the new fabric installed in it's place. This awning is a silver fade. If you are wanting a complete kit I recommend Item # LC405523. This...

  • How Far Apart Are the Support Arm Brackets On a Solera 20 Foot Long Awning
The distance between the left and right support arm brackets for the Solera Smart Arm 12V Power RV Awning part # LC405523 is exactly 20' on center. I have attached a photo for you that shows how the awning width is measured. The actual fabric is only 19' 1" wide.

  • What Do The Mounting Screws For Solera Awnings Screw Into On An RV
The four bolts placed in the top of the awning arms like the # LC405523 typically hit a brace while the rest just connect with the backerboard for the wall. I do recommend using some butyl tape # AL28FJ to help prevent any leaks through your mounting screws and it will also help hold it to the wall while you bolt the arm in place.

  • What Color is the Solera Black Fade Awning LC517517 When Closed?
Yes, it is black. The black fade awning on the Solera Smart Arm item # LC517517 is black on RV side and turns white as it goes towards the roller tube. Once it is all rolled up though you'll see the black fabric. I get you don't want black but the only other option is white item # LC405523 and black will go better with your RV's paint job then white that's for sure.

It cannot be added to any of the other systems such as the Solera 18V Power RV Awning. The Solera XL Power Awning Roller Assembly come with both inside and outside operation.
