converter charger

This smart converter charger converts AC shore power into DC power and uses the Charge Wizard multistage charging system to charge your battery bank. If your RV already has a stock converter charger, it will need to be removed to ensure this unit operates properly.

Charge Wizard Operation

Using the built-in Charge Wizard, the converter charger automatically switches voltages while the battery bank charges. This accelerates the charge, but also helps extend battery life by adjusting the voltage during the different modes. This charger is compatible with flooded lead acid, AGM, and gel batteries.

Charging Modes

  1. Boost: This mode charges at the full rated load for a quicker recharge time. This is where most of the charging happens. It charges the battery up to 90% of the full capacity.
  2. Normal: This mode provides controlled voltage to ensure a full charge. Once the battery begins to reach capacity, the normal state will kick in and reduce the voltage to safely complete the charge.
  3. Storage: Once the battery reaches full charge and remains unused for 30 hours, this mode maintains a lower voltage to compensate for self-discharge. This reduces battery stress and minimizes gassing and water loss.
  4. Equalization: This mode activates to prevent stratification and sulfate buildup during extended storage cycles. These two issues can damage a battery by causing the accumulation of acid at the bottom of the battery and hardened sulfate crystals on the battery plates. This mode is especially helpful when your battery is going unused during storage.

Safety Features

cooling fan

The system includes a number of safety features. It has a reverse polarity protection that will protect the converter if the battery is hooked up incorrectly. Additionally, the unit includes protection for overvoltage, undervoltage, and overcurrent, which can damage your equipment, as well as the converter. It also has GFCI protection that shuts off power when there is a current imbalance. The built-in cooling fan also removes excess heat from the unit. The fan speed is proportional to the internal temperature on the converter, so when the power demand is low, the fan will operate quietly.

Converter Status Remote Pendant for Easy Monitoring and Control

converter status remote pendant

The included Converter Status Remote Pendant monitors the converter's charging status. It also allows you to manually override the charge process to verify the unit is operating properly. The pendant uses a flashing green LED to indicate what charging mode is active. It easily connects to the converter's accessory port with the attached cable.

How It Installs

The converter mounts horizontally inside your RV in a dry location with ventilation. However, as long as the unit has sufficient ventilation, it can also be mounted vertically. The mounting hardware is not included.

terminals and plug

The DC output terminals wire to the battery bank. The AC in cord plugs into a 120V 3-wire grounded source.

It’s good to get my 5th wheel trailers charging system working again. It took extra time to receive the inverter do to out of stock but the unit works perfectly and my batteries are charging properly.

Unit has held up well and working as de signed!

by:

I ordered this part because it was less expensive than at the dealership hoping it would not be a faulty pc of equipment. I was extremely satisfied with the part, the price and the condition in which it arrived. Highly recommend Progressive Dynamics.

by:

It works like a champ! I had retired from the military and am living the full time RV life. My only regret was that it's a converter and not an inverter.

One day I'll make the jump to lithium.

We have only one regret... we neglected to purchase a Valtera electric waste valve through [online store] vs etrailer. We learned a big lesson! The valve was junk and we'll purchase from you, once savings accumulates.

by:

Thank you Brett for some numeric clarification on the purchase of my RV converter, it came on time as indicated. I have used E-trailer for several other purchases, as always, it’s a good and informative purchase!

Adam was very helpful. Satisfied custom er.

by:

replacing a older model it was a little smaller great product. it did come with the remote pendant. Excellent company to deal with

by:

I received my Progressive 9280 converter earlier that originally quoted, which was good. I installed it today and It seems to be working fine. I gave three stars because it came in an etrailer box with paper padding, but no Progressive box, or paperwork. For all I know this might have been someones return before. No way to really tell if it was indeed a new one.

by:

Our battery bank is HUGE! (14 batteries, over 900 Amp-hours!)
This keeps us fully charged and ready to roll on a moment's notice.

by:

  • What's More Important When Choosing A Converter, Watts Or Amps
The amperage is going to be the more important factor for a converter like the # PD9280A. We calculate energy for batteries in amp hours, so the higher amount of amps you can recharge in and hour the faster the battery will charge. That being said, batteries do have specifications on how much amperage they can actually accept so you'll want to verify that you battery can even take 80 amps per hour otherwise certain batteries will shut themselves off and not charge or you'd essentially be...

  • Does Progressive Dynamics Converter Remote Pendant Automatically Switch to Correct Mode
I took a look at the instruction manual of the Progressive Dynamics Inteli-Power RV Converter and Smart Battery Charger # PD9280A and when using the Converter Status Remote Pendant for Progressive Dynamics Inteli-Power PD9200 Series Converters # PD92201 the pendant will automatically switch to the appropriate mode. So you don't have to do anything at all, because it will eventually do go to the correct mode after a period of time and reading the RV battery voltage.

It sounds like the converter will need to be replaced. If this is a separate converter then we have some great options for replacement based on the amp rating. • When is Desulfation Mode Active With PD9280A Converter
The Converter Status Remote Pendant # PD92201 that works with the Progressive Dynamics Inteli-Power RV Converter # PD9280A does indeed only allow you to cycle through three modes, however, one of those is the Storage Mode, and the desulfation is only active when the Charge Wizard from the converter is in Storage Mode. The desulfation mode is an automatic occurrence so you can't toggle it on and off with the pendant; it will automatically increase the voltage for 15 minutes every 21 hours,...

  • Can An Adapter Be Used To Plug A Progressive Dynamics PD9280 Converter Into A 15 Amp Outlet
No, the Progressive Dynamics Inteli-Power RV Converter and Smart Battery Charger # PD9280A requires a dedicated 20 amp circuit. This means that you'll need a 20 amp circuit breaker in your panel that only powers the outlet that the converter plugs into, and the outlet will need to be rated for 20 amps as well. Using 15 amp rated components will cause a short and trip the outlet/breaker because the converter is going to pull more than 15 amps. This may mean that you'll need run a new outlet...

The fan on your Progressive Dynamics # PD9260C running more often than usual could mean a couple of things are going on here; and you're correct in thinking that most of them aren't a good sign. It sounds like you've cleaned out the vents on the converter as well as changed the fuses, but one of the telltale signs that your converter is going out is that it's overcharging your battery. • Troubleshooting Battery Boil Over With Possible Faulty Power Converter Unit

When disconnected from the battery, or when the batteries are fully charged. When the shore power is connected the battery voltage should rise close to this as it charges. • Batteries Not Charging, Do I Need to Replace the Converter?
I recommend you start by just replacing the fuses. If that fixes the problem, you are all set. If not, I recommend replacing the power converter with a new unit. I can recommend a similar model to replace your existing converter if you can find the model number on the unit. Otherwise, if you know the power consumption of all your devices, you can pick a new unit with enough power for everything.
