Question:

Is the 55 amp PowerMax PM94VR close enough to replace my original 55 amp RV converter, or do I need to size up?

Sandra, the PowerMax Charger Converter # PM94VR is going to be perfect for replacing an original 55-amp converter. If your RV came with a 55A unit and you’re not drastically increasing your battery capacity or 12V load demand, staying at the same amperage is usually the easiest and safest path.

The # PM94VR will power your DC system while plugged in and recharge the battery just like your original converter did, assuming it’s connected to a proper DC fuse panel. Where people typically move up to a higher amp converter is when they’re upgrading to big lithium batteries or want faster charging.

If you want to tell me what batteries you’re running now - or planning to run - I can help you decide if staying at 55 amps or stepping up makes more sense. It also comes down to what you want to run off the batteries and/or converter.

One other thing to note is that this is a stand-alone unit, not to be confused with a power distribution center that includes a converter section. Make sure you don't have a power distribution center with built-in converter because if you do, you'll actually need something else or will at least need to make sure you disable/remove the old converter first.
