Video Transcript for Hands-On with the Air Lift Towtal View HD RV Backup Camera System w/ Night Vision

Hi everybody, Andy here with etrailer.com. Let's take a look at this Air Lift dual mount Towtal View HD RV backup camera system with night vision. This innovative RV backup camera is going to include both a permanent mount that's going to wire into your trailer signal lights with the wiring that you see here and a battery-powered suction cup mount for flexible use. Now this camera system is going to improve your rear view visibility for both your truck and your trailer and provide security for your gear. This will be great for monitoring the campsite and your cargo when this is not actively being used as a backup camera. So this is going to be very flexible for you.

This high definition waterproof camera is going to create clear digital video in full color. This is going to give you 110 degree horizontal and 80 degree vertical viewing angles for optimum visibility. And the infrared LED lights are going to provide color viewing night vision. And the multi-coated lens is going to reduce glare and improve color accuracy. This has a resolution of 1080 by 720 and a wireless range up to 100 feet.

Now this battery-powered suction cup mount is going to attach anywhere you need it to. And you can attach this to the tailgate or rear window of your truck when hitching up your trailer or switching or switch mount between different tow vehicles. And just to show you how this works, you can see that I have a cable here. The way that you would use this is you would mount this first to whatever surface that you are needing it at. And this has a dial here, so once you press this up firmly against like your tailgate, you're then gonna turn that dial and then that's going to activate that suction cup.

Hopefully you can see that there. And then once you have this mounted in place, you're just going to slide this camera into the mount and then turn it. And then there is a quick-connect cable here, as you can see right here. And then that's going to allow you to easily plug this in. And then you'll just use this fastener here to lock that into place.

So it's gonna be very easy to connect and disconnect. This battery-powered suction cup mount is going to power this camera while you are using it. So that is a really great feature that this mount provides. I'm gonna go ahead and remove the camera from this mount. As you can see here, this is going to fold into place for portability. And it even does come with a nice velvety stow bag here where you can stow this into this bag when it's not in use. So this is gonna be pretty portable and very easy to keep that on hand. The permanent mount is also included, which is a great addition to this. This is going to connect to your trailer lights with the included wiring harness and hardware. The included cable has a length of 15 feet and this is going to mount right into this permanent mount the same way. Slide into place just like that and then just position it the way that you need it. So again, really a lot of flexibility that this is going to offer you. That quick-connect technology that I mentioned earlier is going to allow the camera to be easily swapped between the permanent hardwired mount and the battery-powered suction cup. So no tools are gonna be necessary when you're swapping between the two different mounts. Now the free mobile app is going to use your smartphone or tablet to monitor the camera. You can adjust the mounts for various viewing angles. You can add or remove backup assist lines, mirror and rotate the image, and capture photos and record video. And this camera interface makes all that possible. You're going to plug this in to a power source inside of your vehicle with the included USB-C cable and the lighter to USB connector. And so that's going to power this camera interface. This is going to then communicate with your camera and then your app or your phone or your tablet via the app via Bluetooth, or via Wi-Fi, I'm sorry. So it's gonna be very easy to set up, very easy to use, and really a complete package that you're going to get here. Now just some overall measurements, in case you we inchesre wondering. When we're looking at the permanent mount, looking at the width first, we're sitting about 5 5/8 inches. And then the height, about 1 3/8 inches tall. And then the depth, about 2 5/8 inches deep. On the suction cup mount, the width is a little bit longer, It's about 6 11/16 inches wide, about three inches tall. And this includes everything that you see here on my table before me. Of course, you're gonna get the camera, you're gonna get the portable suction cup power pack mount, the permanent trailer mount, the camera interface, and the HD camera power harness, the 12-volt car lighter to USB adapter, and then the USB-C cable. You're gonna get antennas that I've already connected one to the camera and two to the camera interface. And then the installation hardware that you're going to need to install the harness. Along with instructions to go into a little more depth into the features and walk you through the installation process. So really a great package here for you to consider if you're looking for maximum flexibility with your rear view, your backup camera system. But I think that's gonna wrap up our look today. I do hope that our time together was helpful for you. Again, my name is Andy. Thank you for joining me.

This misses the mark sadly. Hopefully I'll be able to share my thoughts in a logical order and with clarity.

I bought this camera kit to replace a CHEAP wireless system I purchased off Amazon for our horse trailer. I am wanting a wireless camera system to monitor our horses on long trips. Sounds simple enough, right. Well, it's not apparently. The first cheap Chinese system worked for the most part and it came with its own monitor, however, the signal would blank out both our truck's TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) that would throw warning lights and bells. That was not going to cut it! As much as we want to monitor our horses, we also want to monitor all the tire pressures and not kill them because a tire got low causing a blowout.

Around this same time Air Lift came out with ads showing their new camera system. Their system was four times as much but it seemed to have superior technology when comparing the two. Plus, I have installed Air Lift bags and compressors on both our trucks, so it carried the name I trust with already demonstrating high quality.

The first package arrived from etrailer and it had already been opened and returned, not necessarily the fault of Air Lift, unless the open package arrived from Air Lift that way, but either way etrailer quickly exchanged the camera system with an actual new/unopened kit.

I took my time wiring the power for the hard mount portion of the camera's system. I tapped into an existing 12v circuit within the living quarters of the trailer. Since the trailer's batteries are always on with shore power connected I installed a matching single gang switch. Everything looks like original and clean, I am very much OCD when it comes to things like this.

After getting everything powered I did the simple paring process without ever turning the truck on, nothing out of the ordinary, and the trailer was put away. It wasn't until I pulled the trailer for the first time I realized this very expensive system has a major flaw, it competes with Apple CarPlay! So now I am stuck with camera system that only works as advertised with the truck's ignition off. Once the truck starts the phone automatically switches back to Apple CarPlay, and even after selecting the camera's WiFi it never connects and switches back to CarPlay.

I called Airlift and spoke with tech support, they were not familiar with the system since it was new, so they put me on hold. They informed me that in order to use their camera system I will NEED TO DISCONNECT from Apple CarPlay! And their app is not supported by Apple CarPlay, and this is why I believe they missed the mark!

Today, the majority of new vehicles come with Apple or Android connect systems, even our VERY basic Ram Tradesman has Apple CarPlay and it's GREAT, it actually makes a ton of sense when it comes to driving safety. But now, in order to view the camera system we will need to disconnect and reconnect whenever I want to view the camera system. This is not safe while driving, and this is where technology can't get out if its own way!! There's really no reason why the images from my iPhone cannot be mirrored on my display units, other than money! I am almost certain it has to do with Apple and Android licensing agreements, the technology is CERTAINLY there, heck we would play DVD's in our old trucks while driving down the road, this is really no different, if anything it's ten times easier today.

I would have given them 3 stars for everything so far, but what really made me angry is the fact the "camera interface" WILL NOT power up off the truck's existing USB-C power ports, and when you read the manual it says; "Some vehicle's USB ports may not deliver enough power to plug the Camera Interface directly into their USB ports. In these cases, use the 12v power socket adapter." I will post photos, but this is BS the truck's USB ports are not supplying enough power! I used the EXACT SAME plug and wire to plug in an iPad, portable battery charger (26K 87W) used to charge laptops and Ipads, AND I used the truck's 110vac plug with the same USB cable that charges and powers everything in my life and it still did not power up their "camera interface"! Are you actually telling us the only thing that powers your system is a cheap cigarette lighter adapter?

The problem I am now faced with is 30days has past and I've drilled, cut holes and spliced wires in order to install this system, so I'm stuck with it, plus I have zero faith in any of the other wireless system on the market working properly. I am extremely disappointed in AirLift and this camera system, not at all what I was expecting from such a reputable company given my past experiences, hence the reason why I wasn't in a rush to install it and troubleshoot it until after the 30days, so shame on me. Maybe that's why I originally received and previously open item, because someone else had the same issues.

Hopefully they'll get this system onto our Apple CarPlay, but until then and in order to use it properly and safely I'll need to purchase another device strictly to view the camera while driving.

Sorry for the long winded review, I just wanted to share this with other so they don't make the same mistake, and just maybe AirLift will read this and start the process of getting this to our vehicle's displays so we don't have to juggle devices while driving or getting to a spot to back into.
