Question:

Is it necessary to have a 4-way trailer connector on my car to use the Kuat Piston Pro X bike rack? Or can I get by without it?

Good question, and it is not a necessity for your car to have a 4-way flat trailer connector in order to use the Kuat Piston Pro X bike racks. The 4-way connector that plugs in between the bike rack and the 4-way on your car (if you had one) comes separately in a parts bag, so it is not actually attached to the rack. I have added a photo for you which shows where you'd plug it in so you can see it is not connected to the rack.

So you definitely do not have to use a 4-way with the rack if you don't have one (or just don't want to), and that is true of each version of the rack, the 2-bike, 3-bike, and 4-bike, which are the following part numbers:

- 2-Bikes: Kuat Piston Pro X Bike Rack # KU98VR

- 3-Bikes: Kuat Piston Pro X Bike Rack # KU95VR

- 4-Bikes: Kuat Piston Pro X Bike Rack # KU45VR

This is an awesome choice for a bike rack, as it is as easy as it gets to both use and install in your hitch, comes with locks to secure your bikes and the rack, and even though it is a wheel-mounted rack can work with bikes that have fenders by adding the Fender Straps # KU43VR.

You also have the option of adding a loading ramp to make it simple to wheel a heavy bike up on the rack. For that you'd need the Loading Ramp for Kuat Piston Pro X Bike Rack # KU63VR.
