Voltage, Frequency, Run Time, and Lifetime Hours

Champion's Intelligauge lets you know exactly how your generator is operating. The digital LCD screen continuously cycles through each setting every few seconds to display the generator's voltage (V) and frequency (H) outputs, run time (R) for the current session, and total run time since the generator's first operation.


Built-in Safety Features


1. Low Oil Shut-Off Sensor: If the oil level is too low for safe use, the indicator will flash letting you know there is an issue with the oil level. If the generator gets to the point where low oil can damage the engine, it will automatically shut off.


2. AC Overload Reset Button: In the event your generator is becoming overloaded, the indicator light will begin to flash. If the generator is overloaded and shuts down, this button allows you to restart the generator. Simply unplug one or more devices, push the button, and restart.


3. Circuit Breakers: The generator is equipped with (2) 20-amp breakers to stop power flow to connected devices if overload is detected.


Safe for Sensitive Electronics

Electronic devices are made with delicate circuitry that requires steady, controlled electrical current. Choosing a Generator

When choosing a generator, you need to match the generator's starting and running output with the electrical demands of the equipment you want to operate.


Power Demands

Starting (surge) wattage is the power a device requires at startup. Running (rated) wattage is the power needed to keep the device running. A large appliance with an electric motor such as a furnace, refrigerator, air conditioner, or washing machine may require 2 to 3 times more starting wattage than running wattage.


It is always best to start your generator with no load connected, then add each device one at a time. Additionally, a good practice to consider is connecting your devices in order from highest starting watts to lowest starting watts. As you connect and start devices, your available wattage decreases. This order of operation allows you to start devices with the highest power demands when there is more power available.

Determining Your Power Needs

The following section provides calculations for wattage estimates. This will give you an overall picture of your potential power usage and help you decide on the generator that is right for you.


Industry Standard Calculation

The Industry Standard Calculation is a quick and easy way to determine your required wattage. It may provide some padding in your wattage requirements, which could give you more power than you actually need, but you shouldn't have to worry about not having enough power. The following steps will help you quickly calculate the correct size generator to meet your application.


As stated earlier, you should always start your generator without any load, and then connect each device one at a time. The following calculation requires this approach to work. However, using this calculation removes the worry of connecting devices in a certain order.


1. Determine the starting watts and running watts for the devices that you want to plug into the generator.

a. Find the starting (surge) watts and running (rated) watts for each device that you want to plug into the generator. Look for a sticker or plate on each device or check your owner's manuals.

b. If your device or manual only shows amps and volts, watts can also be determined through a simple formula. (Amps x Volts = Watts)

c. List all of your starting watts and running watts as seen in Table 1 below.

2. To find the total starting watts required, add the starting watts for the device with the highest value to the running watts of all the other devices from Table 1.


2,000 + 800 + 1,000 + 400 = 4,200 total starting watts


3. To find the total running watts, add all of the running watts together from Table 1.


1,000 + 800 + 1,000 + 400 = 3,200 total running watts


To run all of these devices simultaneously, you would require a generator with at least 4,200 starting watts and 3,200 running watts.


Advanced, Precise Calculation

While the method for calculating your power needs outlined above will work, it isn't the most precise. If you aren't afraid of doing a little more math, you can use the Advanced, Precise Calculation to get a more accurate idea of how much power you will need and potentially save yourself some money. Because the calculation above pads in enough power to ensure you can start your devices in any order, it may point you to a bigger and more expensive generator than you need. However, by following the more regimented, order-of-operations calculation below, you'll get a much more precise idea of how much power you need, which could in turn point you to a smaller and less expensive generator.


Again, you should always start your generator without any load, and then connect each device one at a time. The following calculation also requires that you start your devices in order from highest starting watts to lowest starting watts. When you connect devices in this order, you can start high demand devices when there is more power available.


1. Determine the starting watts and running watts for each device that you want to plug into the generator.

a. Find the starting (surge) watts and running (rated) watts for each device that you want to plug into the generator. Look for a sticker or plate on each device or check your owner's manuals.

3. In Table 3, shown below, the values from Table 2 are used to calculate the highest total starting watts required as devices are connected and running. This number represents the highest power requirement you will encounter as you connect all of your devices to the generator. To find this, add the starting watts of each new device you connect to the combined running watts of all connected devices. The highest of these numbers will be the total starting watts required. And again, remember to always connect devices in order from highest starting watts to lowest starting watts.

Hi, everybody. Andy here with etrailer.com. And today, we're gonna take a look at this Champion 6,250-watt portable gas inverter generator. If you're looking for an open frame inverter generator that is 50% quieter and 20% lighter than a traditional 5,000-watt portable generator and will have enough power to provide power for your RV, at the job site, or keeping the lights on and appliances running during a power outage at your home, this might be a great option for you to consider. This 6,250 watt inverter generator provides a portable power source that will also safely charge and run your sensitive electronic devices, such as your HDTVs and your computers. Now, taking a look at the control panel here, we see we have an engine switch that's gonna turn this on and prepare it for startup.

And then, we have our economy mode switch, which we'll talk about a little bit later. And then, our choke that you're going to use when you start up your generator. And then, the Intelligauge that is going to provide four modes. First is gonna be a digital meter for displaying your voltage, and then your frequency in hertz, and then your run time, and then your total run time, and then an AC overload reset button. And then, moving down here to these series of lights, we have our output indicator light.

This light is going to stay on during normal operating conditions. It's gonna turn off when the generator is overloaded. Speaking of overloads, the second light here is gonna be our overload indicator light. This is gonna turn on when the generator is overloaded and the power receptacles are cut. And then, third, is going to be our low oil warning indicator light.

As you can see, we also have these circuit breakers, and these are push-to-reset circuit breakers that are gonna help ensure safe use. And then, looking at our outlets, we have one 12-volt DC eight-amp automotive outlet. And this is also going to include a dual 2.4-amp USB port adapter. So this is gonna be great for charging your smartphones, your tablets, and other USB-powered devices. So this adapter is included with the generator.

And again, you'll just slide it into that port. And then, taking a look at our other outlets, we have four AC 20-amp GFCI 5-20R outlets. So that's gonna be great for your household appliances. And then, we have one 120-volt, 240-volt AC 30-amp locking L14-30R outlet. So as you can see, these outlet covers are going to be great for keeping your outlets protected and covered when not in use, so it's gonna keep out moisture, debris, and other things that could get in there. The power line frequency is 60 hertz, and this does feature an easy-to-access ground terminal. Hopefully, you can see that right there. So that's gonna be your easy access ground terminal. And we have our muffler here. And then, going back to our wide view, this does have an easy-to-access and very easy-to-use fold-out handle that you will install when you pull this out of the box. It has a nice kinda like a neoprene-textured or material handle there that'll give you a comfortable grip. And then, that's just going to drop down when not in use. Speaking of mobility, we have eight-inch-in-diameter wheels that is gonna help you easily move this from place to place, around your RV, or around your campsite, or around your house. And again, just use that handle to pull or push this where you need it. And the easy-to-start recoil handle is going to offer you reliable startup even in cold weather. This features a 301-cc Champion engine that uses standard unleaded gas. So there's not gonna be any need to mix gas or oil. And the tank itself has a 4.2-gallon capacity, and it has an easy-to-read gas gauge. And it's probably a little bit difficult for you to see at that angle, but this gas gauge is indeed gonna be easy to read when you're looking straight down at it. And you're always going to know how much fuel you have left. Something else I wanted to point out is that the fuel cap here is tethered with this chain. So you're not gonna have to worry about easily losing that cap. Now, going back to our closeup view here, this does take SAE 10W-30 oil, and it has a 1.2-quart oil capacity. And I wanted to show you here, the oil fill is right here. And then, what is really nice about this is this features a quick-drain oil tube that's going to make maintenance very easy. So it has a little wire here that holds this tube into place. Let me move that there so you can see it. And so when you're ready to drain your oil, you can just unbuckle this tube, and then allow this to run down into a pan. And then, you can just easily secure this again with this wire, and you will be good to go. This is a clean-running engine that meets CARB and EPA standards. And this is going to be very easy to set up out of the box. You'll just attach the wheel kit and the handle that we looked at earlier. And then, you'll add oil with the included oil funnel, and move this outside. Add fuel, start, and then begin to plug in your electronics. Now, the starting surge power output is, again, 6,250 watts at 52.10 amps at 120 volts and 26 amps at 240 volts. The running rated power output is 5,000 watts and 41.70 amps at 120 volts and 20.80 amps at 240 volts. This strong, tubular steel open frame design, as I said earlier, is 50% quieter and 20% lighter than a traditional 5,000-watt Champion generator. And we talked about the economy mode switch here. The economy mode reduces engine noise and conserves fuel to increase your run time. The noise level of normal conversation is 60 decibels. So measured at 23 feet away at a quarter load, this is gonna register around 69 decibels. So that kinda gives you an idea of how this compares noise-wise to normal conversation. I don't think it's gonna be terribly loud for you at all outside. And for it size, I think it sounds like it runs pretty quiet compared to other generators of this size and capacity. The continuous run time in a quarter load is 13.5 hours, and the dry weight with no gas, no oil is 121 pounds. Now, the overall dimensions beginning with the length, and I'm measuring beginning where this handle is mounted to all the way to the other end, we're sitting at about 26 5/8 inches long. The overall width, and that is including our wheels end to end, we are sitting right at about 25 5/8 inches wide. Then, the overall height is going to be 23 11/16 inches tall. This does include instructions, a quick guide to help you get set up quickly. And then, it also includes the flexible oil funnel that I mentioned earlier, and that dual 2.4 USB adapter and also battery charging cables.     The heat pump is going to draw enough amperage to drain a vehicle battery overnight. Same for the AC unit of the kit you mentioned. If you really wanted to use an AC system like the Atwood part # ACM135BCH you referenced you'd have to look into a generator. When you go with a generator that's going to have you out of the "cheap" options since you'd need a higher rated generator setup like the # CH64FR.
