Choosing a Generator

When choosing a generator, you need to match the generator's starting and running output with the electrical demands of the equipment you want to operate.


Power Demands

Starting (surge) wattage is the power a device requires at startup. Running (rated) wattage is the power needed to keep the device running. A large appliance with an electric motor such as a furnace, refrigerator, air conditioner, or washing machine may require 2 to 3 times more starting wattage than running wattage.


It is always best to start your generator with no load connected, then add each device one at a time. Additionally, a good practice to consider is connecting your devices in order from highest starting watts to lowest starting watts. As you connect and start devices, your available wattage decreases. This order of operation allows you to start devices with the highest power demands when there is more power available.

Determining Your Power Needs

The following section provides calculations for wattage estimates. This will give you an overall picture of your potential power usage and help you decide on the generator that is right for you.


Industry Standard Calculation

The Industry Standard Calculation is a quick and easy way to determine your required wattage. It may provide some padding in your wattage requirements, which could give you more power than you actually need, but you shouldn't have to worry about not having enough power. The following steps will help you quickly calculate the correct size generator to meet your application.


As stated earlier, you should always start your generator without any load, and then connect each device one at a time. The following calculation requires this approach to work. However, using this calculation removes the worry of connecting devices in a certain order.


1. Determine the starting watts and running watts for the devices that you want to plug into the generator.

a. Find the starting (surge) watts and running (rated) watts for each device that you want to plug into the generator. Look for a sticker or plate on each device or check your owner's manuals.

b. If your device or manual only shows amps and volts, watts can also be determined through a simple formula. (Amps x Volts = Watts)

c. List all of your starting watts and running watts as seen in Table 1 below.

2. To find the total starting watts required , add the starting watts for the device with the highest value to the running watts of all the other devices from Table 1 .

3. To find the total running watts , add all of the running watts together from Table 1 .


1,000 + 800 + 1,000 + 400 = 3,200 total running watts


To run all of these devices simultaneously, you would require a generator with at least 4,200 starting watts and 3,200 running watts.


Advanced, Precise Calculation

While the method for calculating your power needs outlined above will work, it isn't the most precise. If you aren't afraid of doing a little more math, you can use the Advanced, Precise Calculation to get a more accurate idea of how much power you will need and potentially save yourself some money. Because the calculation above pads in enough power to ensure you can start your devices in any order, it may point you to a bigger and more expensive generator than you need. However, by following the more regimented, order-of-operations calculation below, you'll get a much more precise idea of how much power you need, which could in turn point you to a smaller and less expensive generator.


Again, you should always start your generator without any load, and then connect each device one at a time. The following calculation also requires that you start your devices in order from highest starting watts to lowest starting watts. When you connect devices in this order, you can start high demand devices when there is more power available.


1. Determine the starting watts and running watts for each device that you want to plug into the generator.

a. Find the starting (surge) watts and running (rated) watts for each device that you want to plug into the generator. Look for a sticker or plate on each device or check your owner's manuals.

3. In Table 3 , shown below, the values from Table 2 are used to calculate the highest total starting watts required as devices are connected and running. This number represents the highest power requirement you will encounter as you connect all of your devices to the generator. To find this, add the starting watts of each new device you connect to the combined running watts of all connected devices . The highest of these numbers will be the total starting watts required . And again, remember to always connect devices in order from highest starting watts to lowest starting watts.

Hi, everybody, Andy here with etrailer.com. Let's take a look together at this Firman 10,000-watt portable gas generator. Now, this gas-powered generator is gonna be a great option to consider for home backup, job sites, events, or RVs, just to name a few situations where this would be a great generator to use. This portable generator is gonna be ready for virtually anything that you throw at it. This is going to give you 120-volt or 240-volt power to run appliances and tools as well as 50 amps service for larger RVs. Now, as you probably know when choosing a generator, you need to match the generator's starting and running output with the electrical demands of the equipment that you want to operate and power.

On this product page, we have provided for you, a really good writeup to help you determine the type of generator that's going to be best for your particular application. Now, this generator is equipped with a starting power output of 10,000 watts and a running power output of 8,000 watts. And this does feature an electric start engine that's going to start up with just a push of a button. And of course, it does have the recoil handle that you probably just saw as I was turning this around to pull-start the engine if needed.

Now, let me go ahead and go over most of the features that this generator does offer. So I'm just gonna kind of make my way across our control panel here. And we do have quite a few features here that I wanna be sure that you're aware of. So first, we do have our engine start switch and then our 4 in 1 data minder that's gonna show you your voltage, hertz, running hours, and low oil alarm. And then we have our battery switch here to power the electric starter.

And then we do have our remote start button right here. And this is actually a remote start program button, I misphrased that, so remote start program button, and then our remote start indicator light. And speaking of remote, in this panel right here, is the remote control with a carabiner on it which you can put onto your keys. And then when your generator is in storage and you're not using it, this has a really nice compartment here to where you can just put that remote back into place. So that's really great feature that this has.

We also have our CO alert, carbon monoxide shutdown indicator light here. And then we have, going down here, circuit breakers here, here, and here. And then right here, we have our 120, 240-volt, 50 amp outlet. And then our 120-volt, 240-volt, 30 amp twist lock outlet. And then our 120-volt, 30 amp twist lock outlet there. And then our 120-volt, 20 amp duplex outlet there that is GFCI. And so I think we covered all the outlets there. We have our ground terminal here and then on this side, we have our spark arrester. So those are the main features that this offers. And then this does feature Firman's 439 cc engine. And so this is going to have a continuous runtime of about 12 hours at 50% load. This clean-running engine meets CARB, cETL, and EPA standards. And this does feature an eight-gallon steel tank. Lemme give you an overhead look here, line that up there so you can see. So we have our fill cap here. We also have a fuel gauge here so you can see how much gas you have left. And in regards to how loud this is, a normal conversation is about 68 decibels. So measured at about 25 feet away at 75% load and standard mode, this has a noise level of about 82 decibels, just so you're aware of that. So eight-gallon steel tank that you can see there. And this also features 10-inch flat-free wheels that's going to give you easy mobility. And speaking of mobility and transport, we also have this fold-down handle with a nice grip. So I use this to maneuver it into my studio. So that's a great addition. And then when you're not using it, it's just going to drop down out of the way. So we mentioned that it does include the remote control that is housed here in this little compartment. We also have a, bring that down there so you can see, TT-30P to L5-30R adapter that's included with this generator. And we also have a bottle of oil, a funnel to help you put that oil in. And the oil fill is right there. I think you can see that. So pretty accessible. And then we also have some tools here that's included with this kit, comes in this pouch. So I'm gonna bring this up to the camera here so you can see. So I'm gonna pour these tools out. So we get a spark plug wrench that's included with this. So that's included along with two other wrenches, two double-open wrenches, 10 millimeter and 12 millimeter. And then it's all included in this little pouch that it comes in. So that's a nice little addition. These tools can actually be used to do the little bit of assembly that needs to be done when you get it out of the box to help you attach the handle and just get it ready for you. So that's a very handy addition that's included with this. And let me look over here, see if there's anything else. And we got our battery here for the electronic start. And just to give you some measurements, looking at the overall length from end to end, it's about 27 1/8 long. The overall width, and I am including the wheels end to end, about 27.5 inches wide. And the overall height, about 26 7/8 inches tall. This is a large generator as you would expect. So this weighs a little over 200 pounds, about 205, 210 pounds, in that range. They're obviously dry. And just a few final notes. Obviously, gas generators produce carbon monoxide, which is poisonous. So for your safety, you always wanna be sure that you run this gas-powered generator outside.
