Video Transcript for Reese Fifth Wheel RP30047 Review

Today we are going to review part number RP30047. This is the Reese Fifth Wheel Dual Jaw Trailer Hitch with a 16,000 pound weight capacity. This fifth wheel trailer hitch uses the two jaw locking system, which will provide more jaw to king pin contact than the economical slide bar models, it will give you less rattle and greater security. I am going to open up the jaws to show you the dual jaws. If you move the safety latch over, that will allow you to pull open the handle. When you pull open on the handle, there is a little notch that will latch onto the plate and it will hold the jaws open right here.

So you can see the dual jaws let me release it and you will see the dual jaw right here and they basically close and wrap completely around the king pin and give you less rattle and greater security. Now it does have the 4-way pivoting head, which will ease hook up on un-leveled ground. Basically you can see it move side-to-side and it also moves front-to-back. This one being brand new is pretty stiff, but it gives you 4-way movement. Now on the side, let me rotate this and I will show you on the side that, there is a height adjustment when you install the cross-member to the fixed legs, you will notice that there is four sets of holes that you can put the bolts through and basically you can get the correct height you need above your truck bed.

If you put the bolts or if you install the cross-member in the top bolts, that would be the lowest hitch height, which would be 14 1/2inches. If you put the bolts in the lower holes, that would raise it up to the maximum of 18 inches, so there is a 3 1/2 inch height adjustment that you can do above your truck bed. The installation on this hitch is very simple and the removal is also. The fixed legs as you can see right here flare out, so they do have a wide stance and they are a one piece leg, which will offer excellent stability. The finish on this is a black powder coat finish on both the legs and the hitch.

It will resist corrosion. This locking handle that I have demonstrated, does have a nice cushion grip on it and again just to show you how that opens, let me turn the handle push it down, so you will be able to see the dual jaws. You just pull open and it will latch into place and back your king pin in, fifth wheel king pin, release it and it will be around the king pin and just push down on your safety latch. You will notice that once you push the safety latch right here around the handle and push it down, it keeps the handle from being operated, which will keep the jaws around the king pin. There is a hole on the latch and a whole on the head and if you put a pin or clip through there or even a padlock, which is sold separately, for additional security that will keep it locked into place.

Now I am demonstrating this hitch on base rails, but they are not included with this part, they are sold separately. The rails and the mounting kit will be sold separately. We do recommend if possible using a custom install mounting bracket, because that will cut the time in half compared to a universal install kit. This hitch will fit the Curt, The Valley, The Draw-Tite, the Hidden Hitch and the Reese Space Rails. Again the gross towing weight capacity on this is 16,000 pounds. The vertical load limit on this is 4,000 pounds. The hitch height we mentioned is 14 1/2 to 18 inches and it comes with a five year limited warranty. The pin and clips that attach it to the rails will be included with the hitch. I just want to show you the rear of the hitch basically to show you the large pivot bolt. This head is installed on a pivot beam and its held in by this large pivot bolt with a pin and clip, so if you remove that pin and clip, you can pull that pivot bolt out and then the whole head and pivot beam would come out of the cross-member. Very simple installation. That should do it for review on part number RP30047.

Overall good experience, except the shipping. Not etrailer's fault, UPS separated the packages and the second one to arrive looked like it was drop kicked. The ramp on the plate was bent, and the black coating is cracked but I guess it will still be serviceable. Fit right in place of my prior hitch and I look forward to trying it out soon. Went from a slide bar to the dual jaw hoping to be rid of the chucking during stop and start up. 112340

Hitch worked as advertised and no more chucking during stop and start, smooth sailing with the new hitch!

After getting the rear rail installed, I used the hitch to set the front rail. I worked perfectly. I can remove the hitch without any binding. This was a problem with my old hitch on my old truck that was installed by the service department where I bought my original 5th wheel trailer. This is basically the same hitch as I had before on my old truck and I had no problems with it after towing approximately 37,000 miles over 15 years so I expect that this hitch will give me the same service. 239363

This hitch is now in my 2016 RAM 3500 and functioning perfectly.

The hitch has worked as expected. I would expect nothing but from Reese. During our last trip the hitch started to creek so I removed the top and applied a little grease. This unit is working in conjunction with a Revolution king pin box on our 5th wheel. We are very pleased with this unit for our application. Etrailer has been our go to place for many trailering items. I would recommend them overall for customer and product performance 330037

I got this one to replace my Economy slide bar model. The slide bar has issues with uncoupling if there is any pull pressure on the the trailer after you level it up. That happened at two places we go regularly so I moved on to this model. It tows great, no bumping and banging around since it has constant 360 degree contact with the trailer hitch. We love it and it will unhitch on a hill if you ever want to. 278167

Received product by UPS. Two of the three packages were intact however the package that the fifth wheel top plate and frame came in were ripped open. Fortunately all contents were there. Suggest these pieces be shipped in a sturdier box, maybe double thick. Other than that, Reese hitch looks very strong. Will be installing it today. More to come. 435544

I received the order really fast. I have not actually done an inventory of all the pieces but think I received everything. The packaging was not in torn up too much but any loose or small pieces could have been lost during shipment. I will update when I get time to look everything over and adjust my rating. 442345

I ordered the hitch above which I did receive it, I think in the future when items are ordered someone should call to make sure the customer has ordered everything they need, I swore this came with rails also, it arrived with none, leaving me in a bind for install living in a rural town with no suppiers. 327586

I installed the custom rail kit and topped it with this hitch. With about 2k miles on it, it works fine. It has a positive lock when the jaws are closed. It lined up with the rails I installed perfectly. Although this is my first fifth wheel hitch, I am completely satisfied with it. 31890

Do you have a question about this Fifth Wheel?

  • Some Guidelines for Choosing Fifth Wheel Hitch for Fifth Wheel Camper with 9000 lb Dry Weight
  • I would recommend choosing a fifth wheel hitch with your future needs in mind. All fifth wheel hitches do the same thing, retain the trailer king pin. The differences between hitches amount to their weight capacities, the features offered or the method of mounting to the truck. The lowest capacity hitch we offer is a 15K, like the Pro Series, part # PS30093 (or RP30094 for a 6-1/2 foot bed truck.) Either hitch would work for you as your trailer is unlikely to weigh more than that when...

  • Can A Fifth Wheel Trailer Be Used with a Ford F-150 Supercrew 5-1/2 Foot Bed
  • You may be able to use a fifth wheel, depending on the width of the trailer. Since the 5-1/2 foot bed is so short, in turning the fifth wheel trailer can end up making contact with the cab of the truck resulting in damage. The Sidewinder is essentially a hitch extender that will provide enough clearance for some fifth wheel trailers to be towed behind 5-1/2 bed trucks. You will need to take some measurements on the truck and the width of the fifth wheel trailer and calculate if you would...

This is a safe and secure style. Only the single hook is considered to be better. It has a double pivot head. The next step down is the Pro Series hitch, # PS30855. This is a very economical hitch aimed at the first-time 5th wheel trailer owner. It is height adjustable from 13 inches to 17 inches...

The slider is used to eliminate clearance problems between the truck cab and the fifth wheel trailer on slow speed turns. The Reese 16K Fifth Wheel Hitch, # RP30047 you have referenced is a fixed hitch and will not give you the clearance you will need to tow a fifth wheel with a 6-1/2 foot bed. The part # RP30035 is a universal install kit that fits most trucks though and would probably work for you.

For a rail kit confirmed as a fit for your 2004 Chevy Silverado 2500 short bed I'd recommend a custom install kit like the part # RP50064-58 which will minimize drilling and be much easier to install than a universal install kit. I attached an install video for this for you to check out as well.

  • Increasing Towing Capacity on a 2003 F250 Crew Cab
  • The manufacturer ratings are based on the engine, transmission, suspension, and all other systems working together. You can ease the load on your suspension by adding a suspension enhancement, and you can tune your engine for more efficiency when towing, but we do not have a way to increase the towing capacity for a vehicle, so you may want to look at a bigger vehicle or a smaller trailer. If you choose keep the 2003 Ford F-250 and want to make it most usable to tow a more suitable...

  • Towing Capacity of 2013 Ford F150 5.0L 8-Cylinder for 5th Wheel Towing
  • The surest way to determine your F-150's towing capacity is to check the door jamb sticker on the driver's side. You will want to find the GCWR (gross combined weight rating). GVW is curb weight plus the weight of passengers and cargo. You will subtract the GVW from the GCWR and the difference will be your towing capacity. You can also check with your local Ford dealer who can look up your truck's VIN to confirm its specific equipment and resulting towing capacity. In all cases the auto...

  • Troubleshooting a Sticking Handle On a Reese 16k 5th Wheel Hitch
  • The 16K Fifth Wheel Hitch by Reese, item # 30047, has a groove in the handle that a latch rotates into. If the latch is not rotated toward the rear of the truck then the handle will not move and hitching should not be possible. If the latch was not rotated and hitching was attempted then some of the handle parts could have been bent. During normal hitching you should not move the handle out. You should back the truck slowly into the trailer and allow the hitch to move the handle out. Once...

  • Raising the Height of a 5th Wheel Trailer and Hitch to Avoid Bottoming Out on Steep Inclines
  • First, you could lower the pin box on the trailer to get some extra height at the front if you have already raised the hitch to the maximum height setting according to the instructions. But to raise the back of the trailer you will need to use what is called an over-under kit. We have 2 different kits and what they do is move the leaf springs from under the axle to above it (if they are already above it there is not much more you can safely do). The first kit, # K71-385-00, is designed...

  • Difference in Leland Pin Boxes And What Sidewinder Needed For 2006 Dodge Ram
  • The Leland pin boxes 7910, 7920 and 7921 are all different model pin boxes that just fit different trailer applications. The 7910 pin box is a standard type and the 7920 and 7921 pin boxes are extended type. The Sidewinder Fifth Wheel King Pin with Rotating Turret, # ST400-SW16K, is listed as the Sidewinder to fit all three of the Leland pin boxes. I am sending a page link to show what sidewinder fits what pin boxes. I could not find a pin box with a number 7900. I called...

  • 5th Wheel Hitch and Installation Kit Options for a 2007 Dodge Ram 3500 Mega Cab Dually
  • There are quite a few options for towing a 5th Wheel trailer with your 2007 Dodge Ram 3500 Mega Cab Dually. To determine the best hitch for your truck, it depends on the bed size. For a 6 foot bed, I recommend 16K Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch with Slider, # RP30051. This is a 16,000 capacity hitch with a slider. I have included a link to the instructions below. We also have two 20K capacity hitches, part # RP30083 and part # RP30084. All of these hitches will work with Fifth Wheel Trailer...

  • Instructions for 5th Wheel Hitch Install on a 1998 Dodge Ram 2500
  • You will need the Universal Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch Installation Kit with Rails, item # RP30035, to install a fifth-wheel hitch in your 1998 Dodge Ram 2500 long bed. Page number 14 of the instructions (see link) shows the location and placement of the fifth wheel rails in the bed of the pickup, for your model. Along with this installation kit you could use the 16K Fifth Wheel Hitch by Reese, item # RP30047, and the Valley Fifth Wheel and Gooseneck Wiring Harness with 7-Pole - Dodge...

  • Does a Cushioned 5th Wheel Hitch or Cushioned Pin Box Give Better Ride Quality
  • If it were me I would go with a non-cushioned hitch and the upgraded pin box for the trailer. The reason for this is the amount of cushioned and chucking prevention on the pin box is greater than what would be on a cushioned hitch and would provide a superior ride. For a 14,000 pound 5th wheel trailer I recommend the Reese hitch # RP30047. This is the old workhorse for Reese. Its been around a long time because it is a quality design and a reliable hitch. For the proper replacement...

  • Which Truck and Fifth Wheel Do you Recommend for a 35-37 Foot Trailer
  • With a fifth wheel of that length, I would go with at least a 3/4 Ton Pickup, like a Ford F-250, Dodge Ram 2500 or GMC/Chevy 2500. Diesels will almost always have a greater towing capacity as they have such large torque outputs and they are built with heavier transmissions. I would strongly recommend, whatever truck you choose, to get an 8 foot bed. A 6-1/2 or 6 foot bed would require the use of a slider fifth wheel hitch. An 8 foot bed will require less parts and it will be simpler to...

  • Can a 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel Tow an 11,500 Pound 5th Wheel Trailer
  • The truck's gross weight when loaded at 7,900 pounds will subtract from the gross combined weight rating which you stated is 20,000 pounds, not the payload capacity. The payload capacity is the amount of weight the bed can hold. As long as the pin weight of the trailer is under 2,340 pounds then your 2010 Ram 2500 is more than capable of towing the trailer. If needed, put some of the cargo towards the back of the trailer instead of in the truck cab or bed. Given that the trailer you...
