Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies and some interior paneling to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, run the red hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

T-One Connection Location Points Behind Tail Lights

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in your rear cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

ModuLite Powered Tail Light Converter

A ModuLite power module is built into this T-One connector. With a ModuLite, your trailer's lights will be powered without overloading your vehicle's electrical system. Because the module draws power directly from your car's battery and bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Video Transcript for T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness Installation - 2018 Ford Escape

Speaker 1: Today on our 2018 Ford Escape, you're gonna be taking a look at, and I'm gonna show you how to install, the Tekonsha T1 vehicle wiring harness with four pole flat trailer connector, part number 118715.You can see it's got a nice attached dust cap. That's gonna help protect your connections from dirt, debris, moisture, things like that. It's going to give you all the proper lighting functions for your trailer, both turn signals, your brake lights, your running lights, and your ground. What I really like about this wiring harness is it's drawing power from the battery instead of directly from the taillights. Some of your wiring harnesses that are out there, they'll plug directly into your taillights. Then your four pole's going to run directly down. And it's drawing power from the lights or from the wiring on your vehicle.

In this one, you're plugging into your taillights just for the signal alone. Your power's actually coming from the battery. Now as far as the installation goes, there are two options. Run it inside the vehicle, as the directions suggest. Then you run it between your taillights and underneath your panels. Or as our customer asked today, we ran it outside down along the inside of our bumper fascia.Next we're going to need to take the taillights out.

Now in your instructions it's going to tell you to run inside the vehicle. You don't necessarily have to do that, it all depends on how you want to do it. My customer wants the wiring, the four pole wiring outside of the vehicle, so it's outside all the time. If you decided to run it inside, you're going to have to take out some of these panels here in the floor and get behind the taillight, unplug them, take your taillight out. There's going to be a rubber grommet that I'll show you in a second.

You'll have to cut that out, then feed your wiring through that grommet from the inside. Route the rest of it over to the other side and do the same thing. The four pole wiring will just bundle up and it'd sit underneath this panel where you spare tire is. Our case, we're going to remove our taillights and we're going to run our wiring right up behind our panel, the fender here. Across our hitch and then up the other side and then we'll run our wire to the front to the battery. So we'll take a flat head screwdriver, a small one. You'll have two caps right here.

Pop those caps off, then you'll have two eight millimeter bolts we'll need to remove. Take an eight millimeter socket. Now what we want to do is the light needs to come back towards the back of the vehicle, just like that.So here's our wiring, we'll need to unplug that and you're just going to push in on that tab. And if you look right over here, if you run your wiring inside, here's your rubber grommet. This is what you're going to have to take out to feed your wiring through, if you decide to leave it inside the vehicle. If not, do it just like I'm going to do it.Now as you can see, there's not much room here to get our wiring through. So we're going to take out this eight millimeter bolt, you're going to have another one right down here. Then we're going to take that out. So we'll take these out first. And we're going to take a plastic trim panel tool or whatever you choose to use at home. We'll just pop that out. It should slide right out.So now we need to get our wiring up through here. Now there's a couple ways you can do it. You can use air line tube, most people aren't going to have air line tube. So I'm going to show you another way to do it. Wire hangers are getting harder to come by. If you take a piece of string and a bolt or a nut, tie the string onto the nut. You just made yourself a plumb bob and it's weighted. So what we're going to do is, we're going to pry out this side. There's a gap right about here, straight down. So we're going to take the nut, drop it right out the bottom. We're going to do is we're going to take our bundle here of our power wire, that we got to run up to the battery. We're going to go ahead and connect it onto this black wire. So when we pull that wire up, this converter box is going to be up behind the fender. It might be a little bit tight in there to try to work with it. So we're just going to attach it now.Now your kit's going to come with some just plain butt connectors. What I suggest if you're going to do this outside of the vehicle, is use a heat shrink butt connector. It's going to help protect those connections from any moisture. Now we're going to strip down our wire. We'll take our heat shrink butt connector, attach it to our wire. Then we'll take the black wire coming off our converter box and put it in the other end. Crimp it down, make sure you got a good connection. Then we're going to take our heat source, we're going to melt that down or shrink it. Just make sure you're not pointing at anything else that will melt or shrink other than the butt connector. Now we're going to take our yellow ground wire. I'm going to take some electrical tape and I'm going to tape it actually onto the string, like that. Since that's such a tight spot up there, it's going to make it go through that hole a little bit easier. Just like that. And we're just going to match our connections, like that. Push it in til you hear it click. Now let's go ahead and put our two eight millimeter bolts here and then our push pin fastener there. Now we'll take the other end, we'll connect it into our taillight. Push it in til you hear it click. So now we need to mount our converter box. You need to look for a flat surface. We can go up here to this metal. Actually right here right along this. This'll be a good place to put it. Take our two sided tape, make sure your area's clean. Make sure your tape sticks. Then press it into place. Pull off your other side. Stick it right up on there. Press it into place, make sure you got a firm hold on it. Once we get that mounted, we're going to do our ground wire. I'm going to make sure that's going to go onto metal somewhere. It could go right in there, right there to the bottom of the frame. We're going to use a self tapping screw that comes in the kit, like thatNext we're going to leave our black wire in place. We're going to take our four pole wire and then our green and red wire with the plugs that are going to be onto our passenger light. And we're going to route these over together. What you need to do is we're going to go over top this brace that's holding the bottom of our fascia on. Then we're going to go over top, the one that is above the exhaust. So our idea here is to stay away from any moving parts or heat. So we're going to try and get our wiring as far away from our exhaust pipe as possible. This plastic piece I can reach all the way around it. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to take my wire and I'm going to zip tie it right up like this. Now my four pole's only going to go to here, but it's going to be attached right in this area, over here. And I just want to zip tie it along that bracket. Now we can attach that the same way we did on the driver's side. Run it up behind our panel, attach it to our light, reinstall our light. Now this hitch has a bracket welded on it. If it doesn't, if you have a hitch that doesn't, you can put it on like this. That'll hold it, keep it from dragging the ground. Or if it does, this bracket here, you'd have to purchase separate. It's part number 18144. It's going to give you a more permanent mounting location for your four pole connection.Next we're going to run our power wire up to the front of the vehicle. Let me get it down real quick and I'll show you how I did it. So what I did with my power wire, attach it to my existing wiring here with a zip tie. I want to stay away from anything hot. So I ran to the back side of this, there's actually a push pin or a fastener that's holding this to the frame. So if you go in between them, it'll hold it tight up there. I zip tied right here to this hard line. Went underneath this panel, there's a 10 millimeter bolt here, makes it easier. So I pull that out, this will pop down. Then you'll have three more 10 millimeter nuts that run across here. Pull those down. Got my wire ran right on the inside of those. Coming right out here at the top.So now you can see I ran an air line tube and found an open space, from where my battery is down as close to the firewall as possible. Trying to stay away from anything hot or moving again. You may not have air line tube, I have some laying around here at the shop that I can use. You want to make sure you use something a little bit stiffer to do this. The plumb bob, the nut with the string is not going to work as well. So wire hanger would work perfect or anything with a little bit of stiffness, so you can fit through there. But if you look up there you can see a giant gap.So our battery sits right underneath this cover. We're just going to pop it up and pullback like that. You can see our positive side of our battery's right here. Pull the line up. Once you get your line up, I suggest double checking down below to make sure your line's not snagged on anything. Think I can get by with it here. Cut that off. Strip it back. Again I'm replacing my the two that come in the kit with heat shrink. Connect one side here. We're going to take our fuse holder. You can see it's in a loop. We're going to cut it in half. We'll strip back both sides. One side we'll add ring terminal. Then our other side we'll put into our butt connector. Then we'll go ahead and take our heat gun and we'll heat that up. So you can see that this nut is probably not going to come all the way off. We're going to take our ring terminal, we're just going to cut out a little section like this. Slide that right underneath. Then we'll tighten out nut back down. You want to make sure when you make this connection, that your fuse is not in the holder. Give them access to their fuse holder, if for some reason need to move the fuse. Now we'll go ahead and put our fuse in. Now we can put our cover back in place over our battery. Back into place.Next we'll test out our wiring using part number I26. Brake lights, left turn, right turn, running lights. That'll do it for our look at and installation on the Tekonsha T1 vehicle wiring harness with four pole flat trailer connector, part number 118715 on our 2018 Ford Escape.

2017 Ford Escape

Installed trailer hitch and wiring harness on a 2017 Ford Escape with some minor issues. The trailer packaging on delivery was a little lean and the corners had the paint scraped off. I called in to etrailer and they agreed to credit me the cost of a can of paint which I would need anyway. This happened within minutes of my call! I install it myself with no help and without jacking up my car! Installed one rear side 1st (passenger side) and then the two bolts on the driver side and then back to the front bolts on the passenger side. Two issue I had with the install: 1. The trailer was about 0.5" too narrow so I tapped with a mallet and expanded enough to install 2. One wire guide for the bolts broke on the last bolt. It would be a good idea to provide some extra wire with the install kit! I have to fish out the bolt and washer and create a replacement wire. I used bracelet type wire for this. Also an auto flexible magnet tool from an auto parts store with used for this purpose of fishing out the bolt and washer. Beside these two issues the hitch install without other problems and I did this alone. Also install a wiring harness and your provided videos on the wire harness and hitch were the best I have seen for an installation guide. I did buy and use black paint and black silicone sealant as per your videos. 619686

I have 2014 & 2017 Escapes. I put this trailer lighting kit on both. It installed perfectly on both vehicles. The design is well thought out. It took me a 2-1/2 hour to do the first one. A few months later it took me about 1 hour to do the second one. 454336

My new Draw Tite hitch fit perfectly, you really need four hands when installing.. it would be a much easier install if yo have access to a car lift as it is a tight fit.. The wiring and installation of hitch went exactly as videos showed.. I wanted to protect back of vehicle in parking lots and that was one of the reasons for putting hitch on this car. Pictures attached. Thank you for your service 501518

I would like to thank etrailer for the outstanding quality and customer support for my order #107790338. This was my second hitch package I've ordered - the first one was perfect in shipping and installation, so I reordered a new package for my wife's new Escape. This time though, UPS totally destroyed the shipping package - I had to help the driver carry it into my garage (it was falling apart even with all the extra packaging tape on it!). When I checked it out, the keys were missing from the J pin locking package and the electronic wiring box was crushed. I called and explained my situation, and within minutes had a new J pin and wiring box headed my way - no need to send the damaged pieces back first. In these times where businesses cut back to squeeze out every dime, it is a pleasure to do business with a company that truly puts the customer first. I will continue to recommend etrailer to everyone looking for a trailer hitch and/or accessories. Thanks again - 642778

Receive the Draw Tire hitch in 4 day which I believe is excellent service. I put the hitch on it took a little over 2 hrs. I don't have access to a lift so I used a floor jack to lift in place. I could have saved some time if I would have remember to put cables through hitch before lifting into place.. It was really easy to mount. Video was really a great aid to installing. Thanks 635250

My son and grandson installed the items I purchased and they have performed without fail during this past year. I am quite pleased. Having a lot of life experience there is nothing more discouraging than having to fix something almost every time it is used. That is not the case with your products. I have become so accustomed to their performance that I seldom think about them and that is good! 633994

Put the hitch assembly in place before you run the wires with hardware. The thin wire they gave me broke and the hardware dropped into my chassis I had to use a magnet to get it out. Aside from that good product. 616920

This is a very complete and high quality kit. But, my install was on a 2017 Escape and I can tell you it took me twice as long to install the lighting kit (2hrs) than it took to install the Mechanical trailer hitch, which was on my back, kinda heavy and very awkward...but was able to do alone..... The electrical requires allot of dis-assembly of rear lamps and trim parts very carefully. Took me about 2 hours to figure through it and ensure things were correct. Also, the directions wanted me to run a 12v wire from the Truck compartment, up to the Hood where the battery was......while that may sound easy, to do it properly would require allot of wire fishing or trim removal to hide the wire. I found a better option for this model car. In the rear cargo area, there is a small access panel on the inside right vertical wall of the cargo area. Remove that panel and there is a fuse panel. Inside the panel is an unused 12v positive terminal that can be used to provide the 12v to the wiring module. I'm sure this is where the factory would connect for the trailer wiring.....?? And I wired the Ground to an existing bolt that attached a cargo strap buckle and was exposed when you take off the left side cargo trim panel to route the wiring. After doing this once, and learning a few tricks, I could now do this part of the install in about 60 minutes. Good luck. Jeff 614136

This is my third installation of these harnesses (on different vehicle types). The harness is exactly as described, plug and play. The tail light harness connection on my 2017 Escape was slightly different from the video, requiring a little adaptation. The written instructions are very superficial, so I thank etrailer for the very complete video. Once installed, it all works perfectly. 612615

Installation involves removing both taillight assemblies and running wires back under the trim panels. When done, the trailer wire connector is inside the cargo area of the Escape so to hook a trailer up involves running the wiring harness out through the back hatch of the Escape. It would be much better if the installation resulted in being able to mount the wiring connector to the trailer hitch rather than running the wires out of the cargo area. The wiring does work properly and we've had no issues. 502254

Comments

The manufacturer specifically designed the harness so the connector would be deployed from the interior of the vehicle when needed. This way, the connector is protected from damage when its not being used. The rear hatch of your Escape has weatherstipping thats thick enough that the wire for the trailer connector wont be damaged as long as you avoid the latch area.

Great service, great pricing, and great value. Got an email from George, letting me know the hitch and other accompanying items had shipped. The tracking map they use is pretty cool. Ordered Friday, arrived the following Wednesday, on time. The shipping box was sturdy, and nothing protruding. I liked that you can spin the image, zoom in, and make sure of what your ordering. The installation videos are very detailed, and the guy that does them, is articulate, direct, and to the point. Matter of fact, that's how I found etrailer, watching the YouTube install video. • Can Trailer Wiring Harness Power Wire Be Connected To 12V Circuit In Rear Cargo Area Of 2017 Escape
  • When installing a trailer wiring harness like part # 118715 or # C56320 on your 2017 Escape, the Black power wire needs to be run to the positive battery post. A lot of folks want to use a circuit near the back of the vehicle instead of running the wire all the way to the battery. We recommend installing it as per the installation instructions. If you connect to a different circuit, you would not be aware if a fuse blew or if something happened to the circuit, which would mean you have...

  • Hitch, Wiring and Brake Controller for 2018 Kia Sorento 3.3L V6 AWD
  • Certainly a vehicle with a 3.3L V6 engine is typically a better choice for towing than one with an engine having half that displacement. Still, the 1.5L Ford does carry a 2000-lb maximum trailer weight rating, enough for a small pop-up or teardrop. But the 5000-lb-towing rated Kia is definitely the better option, not just for its power but also since it is heavier and is an all-wheel-drive vehicle that should provide a more stable towing experience. For the Kia we have 2-inch Class III...

  • Installation of Tekonsha T-One Wiring Harness on a 2017 Ford Escape
  • While we have not had the opportunity to install this wiring kit on a 2017 Ford Escape, I do have the installation instructions, which I've attached, that will show and tell you exactly what is needed to install the Draw-Tite wiring harness # 118715 to your 2017 Ford Escape. The # 118715 is a confirmed fit for your 2017 Ford Escape. You will need a trim panel remover like # ALL648544 to remove the panels. You will also need 8mm socket and ratchet or 8mm Wrench, Drill (3/32” Drill Bit)...

  • Recommendations for Carrying 4 Kayaks on a 2017 Ford Escape
  • Carrying 4 kayaks on a vehicle roof is going to require a special type of carrier and the kayaks would have to be carried on their sides directly on roof rack crossbars. The first thing you will need is a roof rack that includes crossbars that run side to side if your 2017 Ford Escape does not already have one. I have included a link to the roof rack main page for your vehicle. There are 2 roof options listed, not existing rails or crossbars and factory raised rails. Choose the type that...

  • Recommended Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2017 Ford Escape
  • There are 2 T-connetor wiring harnesses for your 2017 Ford Escape, parts # 118715 and # C56320. Basically, they serve the same purpose but are made by different companies. Part # 118715 is made by Tekonsha and # C56320 is made by Curt. Between them both I recommend the Tekonsha. Our installers here tend to have better luck with the Tekonsha wiring products.

  • Recommended Trailer Wiring Harness for 2018 Ford Escape
  • I recommend part # 118715 for trailer wiring on your 2018 Ford Escape. It has a higher amp draw than the other option. It plugs in behind each tail light and then there's a wire that needs to be connected to the Escape's battery. Everything you need for the instal is included. I've actually linked a video from when we installed it. I've also linked the video of us installing the etrailer.com htich, part # E98866, in a 2017 Escape. The process is the same with your 2018.

  • Trailer Wiring and Hitch Recommendation for 2018 Ford Escape
  • Since your 2018 Ford Escape does not have trailer wiring or a hitch that would essentially mean you do not have the tow package so for trailer wiring you'd want the T-One part # 118715 because it's the most reliable option we offer for your truck and it doesn't require any splicing. I attached an install video for more info as well. For a hitch I recommend the etrailer hitch part # E98866 because it has a 2 inch opening, great towing capacities, and has a hidden crosstube which makes...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch For 2017 Ford Escape That Provides More Ground Clearance
  • There are no trailer hitches designed for your 2017 Escape that will not take up some of the ground clearance. All of the hitches have a receiver tube that is below the rear bumper as shown in the attached photo. I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-E-Loader Trailer Hitch, part # 75758. The hitch attaches to the same locations on the vehicle frame but the receiver tube is level with the main horizontal tube of the hitch. Many of the other hitches have the receiver tube welded to the bottom...

  • Difference Between Curt Trailer Hitches for 2019 Ford Escape
  • The difference between the Curt Trailer Hitch # C13186 and Curt Trailer Hitch # C12111 that fit your 2019 Ford Escape is the size of the receiver. I recommend Curt Hitch # C13186 for your '19 Escape because it has a 2 inch receiver which gives you many more options in regards to the type of accessories you can use. This hitch has a 350 lb tongue weight capacity and 3,500 lb towing capacity but unlike the hitch with the smaller 1-1/4 inch receiver, the # C13186 is rated for use with...

  • Best Trailer Hitch for 2018 Ford Escape
  • The best trailer hitch for your 2018 Ford Escape is the etrailer.com Class III part # E98866. This is because it features a sleek hidden crosstube design where only the 2 inch receiver is visible behind the vehicle (see attached image). Its unique matte black finish also provides a rugged look so even the small portion of the hitch that is visible still looks great. The Class III hitch will use existing holes in the Escape for a no-drill installation and provide you with a 2 inch receiver...

  • Recommended Wiring Harness for 2017 Ford Escape with LED Tail Lights
  • Both vehicle wiring harnesses that are available for your 2017 Ford Escape without the tow package will work and function properly with the LED lights on the vehicle. They both feature a powered converter and require a hot lead that will run up to the Escape's battery to provide power and avoid overloading the vehicle's electrical system. The LED lights will not be an issue. Between the two harnesses, I recommend going with the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118715. Tekonsha...

The Act states that if something breaks on your vehicle and you take it in for warranty repair, the dealer must honor your warranty unless whatever modifications you have added to your vehicle actually caused the problem in question. • Parts Needed for Towing with a 2017 Ford Escape
  • The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13186 is a confirmed fit for your 2017 Ford Escape but for the wiring harness you want the T-One part # 118715 instead of part # 118566 which fits a 2013-2016 Ford Escape. If you will be using this to tow then you also need a ball mount and hitch ball. One of the more popular options that we have is the Curt Class III Ball Mount with 2" Ball # C45036. You need to check the linked helpful article on ball mounts though to make sure that this one, which...

It will provide you with a 2 inch receiver opening and has a 4,500 pound towing weight capacity. I also recommend verifying the towing limits of your Escape by looking through the towing section of your owner's manual. You will just need to follow...

  • Recommended Towing Package for a 2017 Ford Escape

  • Is the Sway Control on a 2017 Ford Escape Necessary for Towing
  • I checked the online version of the owner's manual for your 2017 Ford Escape and it looks like every 2017 Escape comes with the added sway control feature. It can be turned off in the information display if you choose to do so. It will not increase the weight capacity of your vehicle, but it can be helpful to help prevent some sway. The type of sway control that is integrated into the Escape is okay, but not what I would choose to use as a permanent sway control solution. The first...

  • Recommended Trailer Wiring Harness for a 2018 Ford Escape Without Factory Tow Package
  • For your 2018 Ford Escape without factory tow package I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118715 because Tekonsha has a better reputation with customers for their wiring harnesses over the competition. This harness will simply plug into the factory wiring connections behind your tail lights. Once installed you then will run the included power wire up to the battery. I've attached an installation video to assist as well as an article to help...

I attached a picture of the hitch installed on a similar Escape as yours as well as an install video too. • Does Power Wire of Trailer Wiring for 2018 Ford Escape Have to Run to Vehicle Battery
  • Not all vehicles can handle the additional amperage draw of the trailer taillights on the vehicle taillight circuits. Those vehicles need setup that draws power from the battery. Some vehicles have higher rated circuits that can handle this, and others need to have the power drawn straight from the battery to protect the taillight circuits. Even if the circuit you have at the rear fuse box is more than capable for the trailer wiring harness part # 118715 bypassing it and running the battery...

  • What is Best Class III hitch for 2017 Ford Escape
  • Draw Tite makes the best Class III hitches for your 2017 Ford Escape as they have the best capacities and the best prices. • Running Power Wire of Tekonsha Trailer Wiring Harness in 2017 Ford Escape
  • When installing the wiring harness # 118715 in your 2017 Ford Escape the power wire should be ran directly to the battery. It's protected by the included fuse. There's no need to install a switch because your Escape's tail lights will function normally with the harness installed. The power wire powers the harness to keep the trailer lights from drawing all their power directly from the tail lights. The 4-way will still receive power when not towing which is normal.

  • Running Power Wire for 4-Way Trailer Wiring on a 2018 Ford Escape
  • I don't recommend connecting the power wire of the # 118715 to anywhere but the vehicle battery. Using the 12 volt outlet in the cargo area of your 2018 Ford Escape may not work properly. The converter needs to receive power from an isolated 12 volt circut and you really don't know if that circuit is isolated or not. There could very well be other components running off the same circuit. If it's not an isolated circuit you could be blowing fuses over and over again. I've linked...
