Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side interior trim panels in your rear cargo area.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

This product comes out of the package looking good and strong and fitting the vehicle well. Installation is straightforward, as long as there's a place to slip the plug through the body to the outside of the vehicle. My unit seems to have an issue with the lights: one side has the brake light constantly lit, the other side is normal. With the Toyota system of variable electric signals to one bulb in the rear of the truck, I can see how it gets difficult to process for this adapter, but there's an electrical box built-into it that is supposed to handle that. And obviously it should be okay because one side works correctly.

It sounds like you have a bad ground connection. Find the grounding point where the trailer harness converter box grounds to the vehicle chassis. Make sure that connection is made to clear, bare metal. If it isn't, remove the ground screw and sand down a dime-sized area around the connection, down to bare metal. Install a star washer between the the ground lug's ring terminal and the vehicle chassis. This will ensure that the washer 'bites' into the metal and gets a good connection. Once installed, spray some spray paint over the connection to protect it. Rust Oleum works very well. Find the main ground connection on the trailer, which is usually on the trailer tongue. Give that connection site the same treatment as described above. You'll never have a problem again.

Very high quality and easy to install even in a Toyota 4 runner. It works great.

Bought in February so I could tow my boat in the spring due to a failed box. Installed correctly by referencing the installation manual and grounded to frame. Never has worked since I got it threw it in the garbage.

2002 Toyota 4Runner

Everything arrived in a timely fashion and, with a little help from my jack, I got the trailer hitch on my 2002 4Runner. All was very well packaged, and I appreciated that the shipping was included in the price.

The wiring kit was a different story. I know that you have trouble even within brands and years dealing with different wiring packages and the manufacture of the car is not very good at finding the plug-ins for the wiring harness for the trailer (I went to Toyota and the parts man could not find it). I finally took it to a body repair guy since I knew that I would break some of the interior paneling if I tried to take it out. Sure enough, it was conveniently located--but no one, not the manufacturer of the wiring harness or Toyota could tell me where to look.

It is now in place, after two or three days of periodic hassle, and working fine.

The Customer Service for e-Trailer is another matter. I am not telling you all something that the company does not know. The help lines are so swamped that the don't call you back, even though the people I finally did talk to tried to help. They even encouraged me to send pictures of the plug-in point I found--except, surprise, surprise--the website rejected my e-mail with the picture because the inbox was 'full.'

eTrailers needs more employees--and needs to pay them more so that they don't get frustrated with their jobs and move on.

But, all in all, despite the hassle with communication, it was a good experience.

1996 Toyota 4Runner

My '96 4Runner hasn't had operating trailer lights for a little while. The company that repaired it last did not place the control box in spot where the elements could do no harm. Winter weather and moisture caused a short and there you go. No lights.
Toyota dosn't make a replacement part any more.
Your C55341 was the ticket. After I removed all the old wiring and spare tire which needed air by the way. I was able to do a simple pulg and play and feed the four-pole connector thru the channel like OEM. Ran a meter test. Plugged into the trailer connector everything works as it should. Thanks for the hook up.

I purchased this item to replace a failed original equipment unit in a Toyota 4Runner. This product is an easy to install plug in device. It is rated to handle more current than the original unit & has worked well since installation.

It has been a year. The 4Runner tows intermittently. No problems with trailer lights since this unit has been installed.

1998 Toyota 4Runner

We have a '98 4runner and needed to rent a trailer but our trailer blinkers were not working.

I ordered this wiring harness and replaced the old one. We tested it and it works great!
The product was incredibly easy to install (took about 30 minutes) and comes with great instructions.

Thanks for continuing to make this product for those of us with old cars!!

Toyota 4Runner

Great product, fit and worked as described along with great instructions. My only suggestion would be to have the final wiring which goes out of the vehicle to the trailer hitch location be able to be "unplugged" from the black control box so it would be easier to wire it through the floor access of the 4Runner as the routing hole is too small to fit the flat trailer connector. In any case, I worked it out and now have fully working trailer lights once again.

by:
2002 Toyota 4Runner

Not the best quality some wire exposed on harness , Also didn’t fit my 3rd gen 4runner well in the fact the box is on the right side with no way to put the 4 pin trough the body. (on the left side there is a thru port ) would not recommend .

I am Extremely Happy!!! : ) with my trailer hitch order. Installation was smooth and easy. It took me less than an hour to install including the light kit. I wish all my projects would go this well.

Much Appreciated.......

1999 Toyota 4Runner

Wiring harness is easy to install; First one in '99 Toyota 4 Runner was installed by hitch installer in 08 and until a short in trailer light shorted left turn signals never had any problems; if new one last 10 years will be great

by:

The wiring harness went into my trailer better than harness when it was new back in 2001!

by:
1997 Toyota 4Runner

This unit was replacing a dealer installed unit from 20 years ago that recently died.
Pretty easy to fit even for a non mechanic like me! It really was plug and play. The only tricky part was getting the old harness connectors off. I guess after 20 years they had welded themselves together nicely. Once that was done, the rest was straightforward. Thanks Etrailer!

by:
1997 Toyota 4Runner

Worked for a month the nothing rechecked all wires and was still good but wouldn't let powers goto the connection for trailer. Forgot where I bought it from and I'll buy a new one now that I was the email

by:

Easy to install works good.

by:

Needs a small connector for the trailer wires to run though the frame. Directions advise for you to roll it up and run it out of the back when needed instead of coming out from under the vehicle.

by:
1997 Toyota 4Runner

I received the harness on Saturday at 1:00 and had it installed and working properly by 3. Would have been quicker if I had followed instructions on video. I had left and right crossed by using colors on vehicle. Other than my error no problems.

by:

Only use it Twice a year, May and October. so far its worked fine.

by:

Everything was just as ordered. Shipping was quicker than originally said.

by:
1999 Toyota 4Runner

What a breeze to install, maybe a tip on how to get the wiring to the outside of the vehicle would be helpful, other than out the tailgate.

  • Trailer Hitch And Plug And Play Harness For A 2015 Ford Explorer
Hey Edward, A great hitch option for your 2015 Ford Explorer is # e98867, etrailer Class 3 hitch. With a simple no drill installation and 4,000lb capacity this is a solid hitch for you. For a simple plug and play wiring harness I recommend the Curt # C55341. I have gone ahead and attached a hitch installation video for you to get a better idea at the install process for this hitch. This is going to get you set up for your basic trailer lights. If you are wanting to tow a trailer with...

  • 1997 Toyota 4Runner Trailer Hitch and Wiring Recommendations for Towing a Trailer
I recommend picking up the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e37KR and the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness # C55341 for your 1997 Toyota 4Runner. The etrailer hitch has a matte black finish that's more durable than the glossy black finishes we see on other hitches, and then the wiring tees in behind your tail lights. You'll also need the mounting brackets # 18144 and # C83DR to keep the 4-Way connector near your hitch receiver for easy access. I also recommend checking out the...

  • Troubleshooting Curt # C55341 Wiring Harness Installation in 1997 Toyota 4Runner
Thank you for your recent purchase of a Curt wiring harness # C55341 from etrailer. The ground wire connection, which you note you have already re-checked, would indeed be my first suspicion based on the harness' behavior you describe. It can often happen that a weak ground will let just enough current to pass to allow some lights to work but not others. Turn signals, since they do not remain on at all times, draw less current and may often be the function that works while a function like...

  • Troubleshooting 4-Way Flat Trailer Wiring That Blows Running Light Fuse in 1996 Toyota 4Runner
The problem with your running light fuse blowing as soon as you turn on the 4Runner headlights could be caused by any of several problems. One possibility is that the wiring harness you have on the 4Runner does not have the required current capacity for all of the lights connected to the running light circuit. If I were you I would go with the Curt Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring # C55341. This isnt one of the wiring harnesses you referenced but I believe it would be your best choice because of how easy it would be to install and because it would be exactly what you need to provide you with a functioning 4-way at the rear of your 1999 Toyota 4Runner. For a hitch, you can't go wrong with the Curt Class III, part # C13087. For a 5 pole trailer wiring harness, there's a couple of ways you can go. You can install a 4 pole trailer connector like the # 118341 and use a 4 to 5 pole adapter like # 20036. The extra blue wire on the vehicle side taps into the reverse light circuit on the 4Runner. To add a 7-Way trailer connector to your 1999 Toyota 4Runner it will need to be hardwired in. The first step to accomplish this is to install the 4-Way, # 118341 or # C55341. Either one will work. Then to add the 7-Way and wiring to install a brake controller you will need # ETBC7. I have included some links that show and explain the ETBC7 installation for you.
