Video Transcript for Rear View Safety Wireless Hitch Camera Review

Hey everybody, how's it going Today we're going to be going over the Rear View Safety wireless hitch camera. So this camera system here, it can be used in a number of different ways. It can be used for fifth wheel and gooseneck and even bumper pole travel trailers. So if we're going to be using it with those embed hitches, we can easily just place this on the roof of our vehicle to help us align with our fifth wheel or gooseneck trailer, so we can get the pin box lined up or the hitch ball for our gooseneck coupler. We can also use this for bumper pole travel trailers as well, by simply placing it on the ball mount or the tailgate slash half of our vehicle. So this particular system is completely wireless, meaning we don't have any wires that run between the actual camera and monitor themselves.

Therefore, we can pretty much mount the camera anywhere we need to. It has a durable, strong metal magnet, so we can attach it to any metal surface whether that be the tailgate, the hatch or the roof of our vehicle. Now, alternatively, if you have a surface that you want to attach the camera to that isn't metal, we have this nice little hook and loop fastener patch that comes in our kit here. It's double-sided adhesive, we'd simply attach one side to the bottom of the camera and the other side to the surface we're trying to mount the camera to. So there's a few different camera system options on the market.

Now with the wireless one, meaning we can easily remove the monitor or the camera while not in use, this is gonna be great for people who are just occasionally towing, maybe once a week or a couple times a month. If you find yourself to be towing every day then chances are you probably want something a little bit more permanent, you don't mind having that bulky monitor mounted on your dash. So in that case there are going to be some other options for you. But for those people who are just infrequently towing, you're definitely gonna understand the value that comes with this wireless system. So a big thing with the wireless camera systems, people are always concerned about the range.

The range of this particular system is gonna be 70 foot. So no matter what truck and trailer combo we have, we're going to be covered with this system. One note I do like to point out with is that it doesn't actually work very well with aluminum bed trucks, such as the newer F-150s, due to the high chance for signal interference. So if we take a closer look at our monitor, you can see here it has a nice clear picture, it's definitely a lot better quality than I expected. We also have this nice little sturdy Mount here.

We can easily adjust the camera, or we can easily adjust the monitor for the correct viewing angle that we need from the driver's seat. It also has this little sunshade so you don't have to worry about glare from the sun. But while we're actually taking a closer look at the monitor we can actually tell sort of the quality of the camera. So it has a nice 120 degree viewing angle, so we can easily see pretty much bumper to bumper here on our truck. Now we can't show you this but it also has some built-in infrared LEDs on our actual camera, so to help with us at night as well. So fortunately the camera is actually completely waterproof, so we're still going to be able to use our camera system while it's raining, or any other type of weather we may encounter. So as far as actually operating the monitor, it's pretty simple. We have our power button on the right-hand side and we actually have another button above that, and that's gonna allow us to change the orientation of our camera. We can go ahead and cycle through those settings now. So keep in mind, we don't want to travel down the road with our camera attached to our vehicle, so you will want to remove it after we've already coupled our trailer. But then, we're just gonna simply hit the power button to turn it off, and then we can throw it in our glove box or center console, wherever we want to store the camera. Keep in mind, if you do forget to hit that power button, it's no worry at all, our camera will turn off after 15 minutes of inactivity. So we're first going to start by inserting our nine volt battery in the back of our camera here. Keep in mind the battery is going to be sold separately. There's gonna be two small screws here, which we'll move. Then we can take off this cover, simply snap in our nine volt battery and then resecure the cover. But once we've done that, ready to mount it. So this camera can be used in a couple different ways. If we're using this to help us align the hitch ball with a travel trailer then we're probably going to place it somewhere on the back of the truck here. It does have a magnetic base, so any metal surface we can attach it to. But another use for this camera that you may not be aware of, is it actually works really well for aligning your fifth wheel and gooseneck trailers. So if that's what we'd have, we'd probably want to place it on the roof of our vehicle. But since we're going to be using this for a travel trailer for this demonstration, we're gonna go ahead and place it on the tailgate here. So it's a good idea, if your truck's a little dirty, just go ahead and clean the surface off. That way you don't have to worry about any dirt causing any scratches. So once we clean that off, since we have the magnetic base, we'll simply just stick it on there. It's a pretty strong magnet, so it does grab on there. And you know what we're gonna do is We're gonna loosen these two little screws on the side. This is gonna allow us to adjust the angle to get the best view of our ball mount and hitch ball. That way it can help us when we're aligning our trailer coupler. So once we got the correct angle set, we're simply just going to tighten down these some screws. And once we have the angle set, we're ready to turn the camera on. There's gonna be a power button here. We'll simply press and hold that for two seconds until we get a solid blue light. So now that we have our camera set up, we're ready to set up the actual monitor. So this is what our monitor looks like, it has a nice little wire leader on the back that plugs into a cigarette lighter outlet, so we're obviously gonna need to have one of these on our vehicle. So here's where the 12 volt outlet is located on our vehicle here. We'll simply press it into the fitting there. So to turn it on, we have a power button on the side of the unit here, we'll simply press and hold that, until we see the blue light, then we have the backlight illuminating as well. And there we go, we have a nice clear picture of our hitch ball and our ball mount, and we're ready to couple our trailer. And that's gonna do it today for our look at the Rear View Safety wireless hitch camera..

It does work. There is a bit of lag in the image so you must back slowly so it can keep up. I tried to put it on the bumper of my 20' trailer and it wouldn't connect, but it connects fine when on the tailgate of my truck. Overall, it was a good purchase for me.

Still a good purchase for me.

by:

The camera worked perfectly the first time. I used it but two days later, nothing. The battery was dead. Next time, same thing. I made sure it was powered off and I even removed battery. Reinstalled battery, powered on and only got still shot of myself. Placed it on tailgate and nothing at all. By the instructions I have done everything correctly. Not working for me at all.

I reached out to the manufacturer about this and they said that it is likely a battery issue, and replacing it would fix the problem. I see that we have sent you their contact information in the case its more than that and a warranty claim needs to be started.

by:

Other than a factory install this is the best option for a cargo camera. The only hitch was that the magnetic mount does not stick to the new Ford aluminum bodies. I mounted a steel plate to the bed cover and once it is folded up place the camera on it. I have a 5th wheel hitch and it is in a perfect position for hitching the trailer.

by:

The camera part of this system failed within a couple of months after purchase. Do not recommend it.

by:

Worked perfectly out of the box. The magnet holds onto the liftgate of my Honda Pilot, and it works fine for backing up to the trailer, however it wouldn't be powerful enough to leave in place (which it isn't designed to do anyhow). The display unit it bright and clear, and when the camera is placed directly behind the ball, you get an excellent reference to putting it right under the coupler, making hooking up a breeze.

The battery for the camera is a tight fit, and I'm hoping the battery clip leads don't chafe. Overall a great product so far.

by:

I had a problem with the video screen in that the image looked like a color photograph negative. I contacted the company and they sent me a new monitor. Be careful when changing the battery. The screws are tiny and can be easily lost. I have a fifth wheel trailer and use an Anderson hitch. This camera is very helpful in lining up the ball under the coupler. I usually can get my trailer hitched up by myself which I would not be able to do without it because I have an F250 with full crew cab and would not be able to see where my hitch ball was.

by:

Simple set up and works great. I have multiple trucks and trailers and this works great to move from truck to truck or trailer to trailer when hooking up doubles.

by:

Easy to use. The battery life is very short for the camera.

by:

The camera works great for hooking up the 5th wheel. Would give it 5 stars except the battery goes dead so quickly. Even switched off immediately after hooking up trailer, I get about three uses and then the 9 volt battery has to be replaced.

by:

This camera works great...a good buy...makes hitching the pontoon trailer a breeze!!!!!!!!!

by:

I think this model has been discontinued by RVS. The one I had, used a 9V battery plugged inside the camera case. They make other similar models with internal rechargeable batteries. This 9V battery powered version would just turn off after a few seconds, with a known good battery. Acting like the battery was old or weak or dying - when it was a nearly new battery. RVS, the manufacturer, replaced it with a version with a rechargeable battery and it works great.
Also, the image on the display was a mirror image of what the camera was viewing, it was confusing to back up and always made me turn the wrong direction. That problem is not present with the replacement system.
I was not satisfied with this camera, but I am happy with the one RVS sent (a different, but similar model) to replace what I consider a defective camera. I do not know if it was only the one camera I had with these problems or if this particular model is notorious for these problems.
I did not inform etrailer of these problems until after the 30 day replacement window. Also, etrailer (within 30 days) would have only been able to do one of two things, exchange with same model or refund. RVS replaced this camera with a more reliable, different model camera. Thanks RVS.

This camera system is powered by a 9 volt rechargeable battery and does have a 1 year warranty. We do a system that uses your smartphone and does not require a 9 volt battery. It is part # SH04.

Nice camera. I picked this one out of three that was able to work with my 1996 Chevy Dually Truck. I picked it because I could use it on my other trucks when hooking up a trailer. Very easy to set up and use

by:

Worth Every Penny. Ever had to get out of your truck more than 6 times to perfectly line up your hitch to your ball? Well, once you get this system down pat you may only need to check it once or twice before dropping your hitch on the ball. It's as good as having a helper line you up, but no need to train them in hand signals. I'd recommend this to my friends and already have to some. Recommendation: Back up slowly to your hitch. You never know when it might be too high and damage your truck before you realize whats happening. I mount my camera below the tailgate latch for better horizontal alignment to ball. Also, start your camera before your in-cab monitor for fast pairing.

Its been a year now, and Ive learned to change the camera 9v battery if it wont connect in cab. Every time I do this were back to like new live video of the hitch alignment. Enjoy.

by:

My sole purpose for getting this unit was to facilitate hooking up my travel trailer. In that role, it has performed well. It has saved me many trips from the driver's seat to the hitch. I did try using it once on the back of my 29' travel trailer to assist backing into a campsite. The refresh rate seemed to be problematically slow, so if using it near the limits of its range, do so with caution. For my original intended purpose, though, it's a great product at that price point. Be sure you have a "cigarette lighter-type" socket in an appropriate place for the screen to plug in and a place for the camera that will accommodate its magtetic base.

Still pleased after having it for almost 2 years now.

by:

This is a great product once the monitor pairs up with the camera. I travel solo and the lens on the backup camera on my pickup is offset about 3 inches to the side of the tailgate handle. It has been trial and error to back up to my camper hitch until I purchased this wireless backup camera. I takes a little getting used to the small screen and pairing the two units was a bit tricky. That said, the magnet on the camera base is strong and the color screen is very helpful.

I love this backup camera. After using it for a year to hitch my travel trailer without a spotter, I cant imagine camping without it. I back the truck up to the hitch receiver perfectly every time with this camera guiding the way. Great product etrailer.

by:

I needed a backup camera for ram pu. you can't see bumper or dump trailer hitch.
The mirrors don't work. Most of time 99% of time I'm by myself. So a camera was the answer.
This one was the one I needed,it had a nite vision and color in daylight. With the magnetic base I can put it on tailgate and see all . Monitor just plugs in 12v assorey . its portable I can use on tractor also. used it twice so far and it's Great.

10/19/2021

Its a time saver and easy to use on any vehicle with 12v outlet.

by:

I just received my hitch camera and so far I am impressed with the quality and appearance. I tested it out on my truck and it took less than a minute to stick the camera on the tailgate and plug the monitor into my power socket and power it on. The image was crystal clear and I think it will make lining up my trailer hitch so much easier without a spotter. The real test will come when I put it to use over and over and see how it holds up. So far I am a happy camper.

After using this camera over the past year, I am still very satisfied with it. It has held up extremely well and I would highly recommend it.

by:

The camera system works well. It’s made hooking up my trailers much easier and quicker. However. I’m having to use rechargeable 9-volt batteries that I have to remove when I’m not using the camera. Even with it off. It still drains the battery.

8/18/2022

I talked to the manufacturer, they recommend using a 9V Lithium or Alkaline non-rechargeable battery for the RVS-83112. If that doesnt work and the battery is still draining, I would say the camera is defective and to start a warranty process.

by:

Great hitch cam. Very easy to set up. Took less than 5 minutes from opening the package until I was viewing the area behind my truck. This camera will save a lot of trips back and forth hitching up to my camper and backing the trailer into places. I was also very impressed with the customer communications from etrailer. They keep me in the loop from the order date through to the delivery date. Thank you for the great service. I will be ordering more stuff from you guys!

7/19/2020

Great! I was surprised how easy it is to move it from one tow vehicle to another and the signal range off the camera. My only wish is that the screen could be a inch large so it is easier for old eyes to see.

by:

This is a Christmas gift, so I haven’t had a opportunity to view or use this device. I have several trailers and backing up to the hitch means jumping in and out of the truck numerous times. Since my older truck ( 1979 F 150) does not have backup cameras this will be a great addition. The gift is for me and I’m anxiously awaiting Christmas.

This camera has worked out very well my son in law has a built in camera on his new truck and this camera works just as well I’m impressed with how well it works. Thanks

by:

Being a solo traveler with my travel trailer, my backup camera works like a charm. Once I have it properly aligned with my hitch, two tries at the most is all I need to make the connection. Comes in especially useful when I need to hook up in a hurry because of approaching high winds. Best addition that i’ve made to my camping experience.

James V.

Great!

by:

Just bought this for a Xmas gift. Tested it out quickly. Kept the camera in my garage and backed up the car. Was able to get good reception about 70 feet away, even after closing the garage door.

The picture is clear and should easily aid in lining up the hitch and trailer toungue.

Can’t speak of longevity yet, but will update sometime next year.

Dave F.

12/17/2019

Update after a year... still works great. Used about 10 times this summer to hook up a camper trailer. Works great!!

by:

Great picture! Easy to use. I use for backing pickup back to my travel trailer and also when backing travel trailer back to my fence.
Only thing that could be better is a bracket of some kind to place it directly above the ball.

Ron D.

7/23/2021

It works great! Receiver connects with camera almost instantly. I have placed camera in several different positions to try to find the best angle which equates to versatility of the camera. One of the clicks for the 12V adapter broke the 2nd time I used it, but it still works fine.

by:

I just received this camera today so I have't had the opportunity to use it yet. I gave it 5 stars already before using it. I have the confidence in etrailer and their products to give it 5 stars prior to use. Everything I have ever gotten from them have has been class A products and always works without errors. I have every bit of confidence in etrailer and the products they sell. They're quick to fill the order as well as to ship them. I've never waited more than a week on anything ordered regardless the size of the item. Because of their excellent customer service , I will continue to buy from etrailer as long as they have what I need. Excellent place to buy online.

Myron F.

10/13/2019

It worked great for awhile. Then it quit. Turn it on and in about 5 seconds it goes off. Changed batteries and the same thing. But I came up with a better way for hooking up then the camera.

by:

Easy to use and works great every time!

Although it won't replace your 3rd brake light, the Rear View Safety Wireless Hitch camera # RVS-83112 is going to be the best solution for your 2001 Dodge Ram pickup. This camera can be mounted in a variety of places on your truck bed rails/cab and send a wireless signal to the...

Yes, I have a great backup camera option for you. Take a look at the Swift Hitch backup camera # SH02DIGITAL. • Recommended Camera System to Monitor Trailer Tires During Travel
You can pretty much mount the camera for the RVS System # RVS-83112 anywhere you have a flat surface on the truck or trailer, so I'm confident you can find a good spot that allows you to monitor the tires. The system creates its own WiFi signal so interference from mountains or potential loss of connection in remote areas shouldn't be an issue. If you have any reservations about this style though you can always lean on the reliability of a hardwire system like # RVS # RVS-770614-213, which...

  • Can the Rear View Safety Wireless Hitch Camera Be Used on an RV?
Yes. The Rear View Safety Wireless Hitch Camera # RVS-83112 can be mounted on the back of your RV and used as a backup camera. This system has a 3.5" monitor, will work up to 70' away from the monitor and the camera has a 120 degree viewing radius. However, since it uses batteries (not included) you may want to consider a similar model that is powered by a 12v power source such as your cigarette lighter. I recommend looking at the Rear View Safety Wireless Backup Camera # RVS-091406 ....
