Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Chrome Hitch Ball Installation

Hey, guys. it's Jake here with etrailer. Today I'm gonna show you how to put a new ball on your weight distribution head. Now, to explain a little bit about why you would need to go through this process. First thing is, if you're just like our situation and you need to put a ball on your kit that did not come with one, that's the reason you'd have to do it. If you take a look at this one here, you can see some marring on the ball itself.

And as time goes on, that is only going to get worse, because you'll have little pockets where dirt and debris can hang out in rocks, and stuff like that. They'll get trapped in there, and then when you go to put your trailer down on it and you drive for a couple hundred miles, it's gonna keep grinding that down. And then what was a two and five 16ths ball is no longer two and five 16ths. That's gonna cause more wear on the ball, more wear on the coupler, and just more wear in general. So having a nice, clean setup is definitely gonna help you get down the road safely.

Now, another reason you'd go through this process is if you had a camper that, or a trailer, that had a two inch ball on your weight distribution, and you're upgrading to a two and five 16ths. That's gonna be another reason why you would want to go through this process to swap out this ball. We've got our two and five 16ths ball that we're taking a look at today. We've actually got a new Reese weight distribution head here. And essentially, to start the process, you'll need to do one of two things.

You'll either need to put your ball in a vice, like we have here. There's two flat sides on the edge of the ball. You can obviously see we have it flipped over here. You'll want this upside down if you have a vice that's this heavy. Now, the torque setting for this is going to depend on the size of the shank.

Ours is an inch and a quarter shank. You wanna make sure that that matches the hole in your weight distribution. But you wanna match the torque specs for the size shank that you have. Usually, when you get the ball in your package, it'll say what to torque it down to. So since we're putting it on this, we're gonna take our head, flip it over, and set it on there just like that. Now we'll take the lock washer, slide it over, followed by the nut. We'll thread this down all the way by hand till it's tight. Now, no matter what size shank that you're gonna have on the ball, you're gonna have, it's gonna be a pretty high torque setting. So you'll need to either rent a torque wrench. We've got this four foot torque wrench. It comes in handy when we're doing this kind of stuff, but maybe check with a local shop. They may be able to torque it down for you if you get it assembled. Or you can typically rent one about this size from your local auto parts store. So now we'll just need to take our wrench, and torque it down. Now, what we ended up having to do is, we've got a large socket here, and we're using a inch and 13/16 socket. That's what you'll need to fit over that nut. We're using an extension, because the head of our torque wrench is not able to fit in here. When you're using an extension to do this, you wanna make sure that it is going to be an impact, because otherwise, if you use a chrome extension, it's going to twist. But this should not twist. And we'll get it tightened down. With your ball torque down properly onto your weight distribution, that's gonna do it for the installation.

  • Weight Distribution and Sway Control Recommendation for a 2024 Ember Overland 171FB Travel Trailer
Hey Michael, thanks for reaching out! The integrated sway control you have on your 2021 Ford F-150 is basically going to react the same way the Curt True Course Advanced Bluetooth Trailer Sway Control # C94VV does; by activating your trailer brakes to help mitigate trailer sway. It can work, but what I recommend doing is disabling that feature and using the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control # RP66083 and the 2-5/16" Hitch Ball # 19286 because the cam sway control...

  • Hitch Extender for 10,000 lb Travel Trailer Compatibility
I wish you would have asked this question prior to your purchase of the Curt Extender # C45791, because this extender will not work for your application. It is rated for the 3,500 lb total trailer weight towing capacity and because it is an adapter will also decrease your tongue weight rating of your trailer hitch by 50%. Instead, you may want to consider the Brophy Ball Mount for 2" Hitch # BH20. This ball mount is capable of towing 10,000 lbs and has a measurement of 13-1/4 inches...

The most important thing to know when selecting a weight distribution system is your total tongue weight, which is the tongue weight of your fully loaded trailer plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your 2016 Ram 1500. Your total tongue weight needs to be in the middle of the weight distribution system's tongue weight capacity in order for the system to work effectively. The Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System # EQ37060ET has a tongue weight capacity between 200 lbs...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for 2018 Keystone Summerland 1750RD
The most important thing to consider when picking out a weight distribution system is the total tongue weight of your setup. This number includes the loaded tongue weight of the trailer (as if it's ready for a trip) along with any added cargo weight you might have loaded behind the rear axle of your F-250. Ideally this number falls comfortably within the operating range of the system you choose. Based on my research your 2018 Keystone Summerland 1750RD Trailer does indeed have an empty...

  • Is Weight Distribution Needed for 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 Towing 2019 Keystone Hideout 22RBWE
Hey Rex! Those are some great questions. A weight distribution hitch (WDH) isn't always needed but in your case you will want one. Typically if the weight of your trailer is more than 50% of the weight of your vehicle it is a good idea to use a WDH. If you are getting a lot of rear sag, trailer sway, or find it hard to stop or steer those are also good reasons to use one. I'm assuming based on that engine you have a 2019 Silverado 1500. The GVWR of your Keystone Hideout is 7,600 lbs so...

For your 2007 HS ADMIRAL SVE, your Hidden Hitch receiver sounds like it is capable of towing your trailer. The rated 5,000 lb capacity is without weight distribution, but from my research it is rated for 6,000 lbs with weight distribution just like the Curt # C13701. If you are needing a weight distribution system for this hitch receiver you likely will need a system rated for 15% of your total trailer weight. That puts you around 540 lbs roughly. You want a system that falls in the...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for a 2014 Airstream International
In order to choose the correct weight distribution system for your 2014 Airstream International and your 2016 Ford F-250 we will need to find your total tongue weight (TTW). Total tongue weight is calculated by adding the loaded ready to tow tongue weight of the trailer to any cargo stored behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. To confirm which weight distribution hitch will work to tow your trailer with a GVWR of 4995lbs you will need to measure its tongue weight, as the tongue weight rating is usually with the trailer unloaded and will not be accurate. The easiest way to get an accurate tongue weight measurement is with a tongue weight scale like the # e99044, but there are other methods that are outlined in the included help article. Since your trailers GVWR is 4995lbs and tongue weight is typically 10-15%...

  • Weight Distribution w/Sway Control Recommendation for 28ft Airstream Towed by Lifted F-250
First thing we need to do is pick out the correct rated weight distribution system for your 28 foot Airstream. I looked up specs on what you have and the total weight could be 7,600 lbs so you'd most likely have a tongue weight range of around 700-1,000 lbs which the Blue Ox SwayPro part # BXW1000 you mentioned would work well with most likely but it would not be my first choice. • Weight Distribution Recommendation for 6,000 lb Camper Trailer
You'd be fine to have a weight distribution installed on your trailer as you travel on the hill you described. If anything it might help prevent the trailer from leaning excessively. For a 6,000 lb trailer you'd be looking at a tongue weight most likely of 600 to 900 lbs so the weight distribution with sway control that I would recommend is the Strait Line part # RP66084 which has a tongue weight range of 600-1,200 lbs and features only sway control designed to fight sway before it starts.
