Designed for use on agricultural applications, this free-backing, driver's-side brake assembly won't engage when you reverse, even if your hydraulic actuator is activated. Constructed of sturdy steel. Mounting flange has 4-bolt pattern.

Notes:
Free-backing brakes let your trailer move in reverse without the brakes being activated by your surge actuator. These brakes are needed if your actuator does not have a reverse lockout, which is a mechanism that ensures that the actuator does not activate when your rig moves in reverse.
This Demco free-backing brake assembly has a fall-away shoe that is designed to provide full braking action when your trailer is moving forward and to supply only limited friction when the trailer is moving in reverse. This is largely due to the incorporated dual springs at the shoe's pivot point. (One spring sits on either side of the shoe lever, so only a single spring is visible when looking at the brake assembly.)
When your rig is moving forward and you engage the trailer brakes, the fall-away shoe expands normally, with the leading edge of the shoe catching the drum. This occurs because the plunger on the hydraulic cylinder pushes on the shoe lever, forcing the leading edge of the brake shoe into the drum. Once that edge catches, the dual springs at the shoe's pivot point facilitate braking by forcing the rest of the shoe to pivot into the drum. The action of the shoe against the drum provides the friction required for braking.
When you are driving in reverse, however, the hydraulic cylinder and the springs work against one another. Even though the plunger pushes on the shoe lever, the dual springs of the fall-away shoe overcome the pressure from the brake cylinder, keeping the leading edge from catching on the drum and ensuring that the shoe does not fully pivot into the drum. Because the shoe makes only slight contact with the drum, just enough friction is generated so that only a minimal amount of braking occurs when you are in reverse.

Hello, everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today I'm gonna take a look at this Demco 13 Inch Left Side Free Backing Agricultural Hydraulic Drum Break Assembly. Has a 24,000 pound capacity. Now, this is a hydraulic drum break assembly. It is specifically made for agricultural applications.
It is designed for youth with surge type trailer brake actuators. And this one here, the configuration is a left hand or driver's side assembly. We do also sell the right side passenger side assembly. That's part number DM01971, and it's listed on this product page as a related product. Now, this assembly is the free backing design.
And when we say "free backing design," you can notice that the free backing design is by this D-shaped fall away shoe right here. Basically, the free backing design lets you back up without engaging the trailer brake, even if the actuators activate it. This riveted fall away brake shoe will only anchor on your drum when the brakes are engaged as the trailer's moving forward. Now, this is a nice, sturdy steel construction. Does use a zinc plated wheel cylinder.
And this is a manual adjustment brake. You can see the adjustment wheel right down here, so it will require a periodic manual adjustment. Now, the mounting bolts and hardware to install this is sold separately. The brake mounting flange that this the bolts to, you can see it's a four hole pattern. It's a four on four and 13 sixteenths measurement, which is if you measured from center of this hole, directly across to this hole, or this way to this way.
And that bolt pattern is usually used in the agricultural applications. This part is made in the USA. Dimension. We call this a 13 by two and a half inch break assembly. And what those dimensions mean, the 13 inch is gonna be the diameter from this shoe to this shoe. Now, this ruler is actually a 13 inch ruler, so you can see if we put it on there, there's your 13 inch diameter. And then, the two and a half inch, that's gonna be the width of the brake shoe. So, if we put that on there, there's your two and a half inch measurement. This does require a 13 inch diameter brake drum to go over it. The wheel size this will accept is 16 inch up to 22 and a half inch wheels. And again, the axle this is rated for is up to 24,000 pounds. But that should do it for the review on this Demco 13 Inch Left Side Free Backing Agricultural Hydraulic Drum Break Assembly with the 24,000 pound capacity.

They made handling a 500+ bushel bin wagon much easier for my tractors on hills and just in general. The wagon doesn't push me around or anything. Big upgrade
