How to Remove a Threaded Bearing Buddy That is Stuck

Question:

I recently bought a used boat trailer with Bearing Buddies. The hubs appear to be oil hubs have threaded to add oil that have been converted to grease using Bearing Buddies. I am trying to pull the hubs to grease the bearings and replace the seals but I cant get the Bearing Buddies off. Do all oil hubs have threaded dust caps? I can turn the Bearing Buddy using a pipe wrench a little bit but they will not turn off. I can get it to rock back and forth using a hammer but not very far. Not sure if these are threaded or pound on. Its on a 2006 Prestige boat trailer. Thanks.

The vast majority of oil bath style hubs will indeed be threaded. These are also notorious for getting pretty stuck after a while. What you will need to do is spray some WD-40 all the way around it after being loosened as much as you can. Let that sit and then tighten, and back off. This may need to be done a few times to break up whatever it is that it is getting hung up on.
