Troubleshooting a Curt Echo Brake Controller That Has Choppy Braking

No matter what setting I have it on it is very bumpy when I am stopping. I have followed the instructions in setting it up, and it seems smooth, but by the next of the trip it ends up bumping when I am slowing down and stopping. I am just not sure if it is my brakes or the controller? Any ideas?

This can be caused by a couple different things. The Controller # C51180 have a loose connection in the vehicle's 7 Way plug. They can start to back out from said plug causing intermittent connection. If the controller can be pushed in and then pulled out a little after the 7 Way door comes down to hold the controller in place, a shim may be needed to keep the controller fully seated.
I spoke to Curt and they said if the controller is seated properly in the 7 Way on the vehicle, it is most likely the brakes on the trailer over heating. Especially if it is not doing this at the start of the trip. This can happen if the brakes are adjusted too high. You will need to back the adjustment screw off a little at a time to make sure they are at the proper position. This can be done with a slot screwdriver, but is significantly easier with the Performance Tool # W80630. With no power going to the brakes, the hub should be able to spin almost freely. I included a video what will help locating the adjustment screw and how the tool would be used.
