What is Difference Between Redarc Tow Pro Liberty and Elite

The Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty # RED24FR is the way to go over the Elite # RED44FR as you get the nicer functions of the Elite at a lower price. The Elite has the ability to be the more preferred proportional style of controller as well as a time-delayed whereas the Liberty gives you just the proportional setting which is what you'd want to use with your towing setup. Proportional controllers sense how hard you are applying the vehicle brakes whereas time delayed means it puts a preset amount of braking pressure over time. Since this feature isn't supported on the Liberty it allows the cost to be lower.

You'd need the part # 3040-S to install either Redarc in your 2012 Toyota 4Runner. When we installed the Elite in a 2012 4Runner we used the universal bracket # 331-TPSI-001 which you can see in the attached install video on this page.

The Red-Arc Tow-Pro Elite would be preferred if you were towing trailers in both on-road and off-road/rugged terrain settings. Since it can operate as either a proportional braking system (a much better way to go for on-road towing) or as a time-delayed system (time delay system is preferred for off-road on rough terrain as the varying terrain can confuse a proportional braking system).

@JamesonC using my TowPro Elite in a 1951 Dodge M37 (truck made for the military for the Korean War). It gets driven on road and in the woods hauling log trailers. So I switch between proportional and time delay regularly. This was the only controller I could find that would work with the truck’s 24V electrical system and still put out proper voltages to run 12V trailer brakes. Also appreciate the single small knob control on the dash - it minimizes the disruption of the look of the dash on my antique truck.
