There is not a safety pin on the Demco Trailer Coupler # DM89FR that goes through the latch, but there is an internal mechanism that locks the ball into place in the same manner that a pin through the latch on a standard coupler would ensure the hitch ball stays in place. I've attached a photo that shows the cross section of this coupler and it's actually a really great idea. The coupler latch is firmly kept in place and the internal pin keeps the hitch ball wedged in place until the latch is released. It's a really cool innovation that is extremely secure.

I've linked our review video on this coupler for you to have a look at and see how it works.

Not sure how old this question is, but here's my 2 cents. My coupler wasn't purchased here, rather it came installed on my trailer when new. There IS a safety pin provision, it gives me peace of mind to use it, regardless. When coupled and with the locking wedge under the ball, a hole is visible in the image above. A 1/4"x 4 1/2" pin, IIRC, was what came with my trailer.

@MaxM Absolutely. The # e98888 lock would work great!

I highly recommend a safety pin. I have this type of hitch on my PJ brand flat bed trailer. On my second trip out It came free from the 2” ball hitch while I was traveling 65 mph down a freeway hauling my side x side behind my RV. Thank God for safety chains. My trailer didn’t come with the safety pin and the salesman said it wasn’t needed. It’s needed for everyone’s safety.
