Should 7k Trailer Brake Assemblies be Used on a 6k Trailer Axle
Question:
is it ok to put 7000 lb backing plates on a 6000 lb axle?

Dimensionally they'll fit and they will operate but you don't actually get a stronger braking action. Instead the brakes will be harder to setup and get the correct amount of braking action. The heavier duty assemblies have a magnet that's more sensitive which helps with heavier weights but when used on a lighter trailer they become harder to setup and not anymore powerful.
Best option is go to with 6k brake assemblies like the part # 23-459 for the right hand side and part # 23-458 for the left hand side.
