Does the spindle look damaged at all? Sometimes bearings can be a pretty tight fit to the spindle but there should be enough clearance to allow the bearing to slip on without needing too much effort.
For Dexter 7k axles the bearing surfaces should measure 1.74 and 1.25. You'd want to make sure your spindle matches those diameters. Chances are the spindle may have gotten deformed from overheating and now it's not perfectly round.
