Castle Nut Torque Spec for 7,000 Pound Trailer Axle

Question:
what is the nut torque on a 7000 lb axle after packing the bearings?

Expert Reply:
There is no specific torque rating when reinstalling the castle nut after packing the bearings. You want to run the nut down until there is no side to side play in the hub, and then back it off to the next notch in the castle nut so the retainer can secure the nut. Over-tightening the castle nut can damage the bearings, races and spindle.
I have attached a video showing this process. If you jump to the 4:45 minute mark, you can see the procedure outlined above.
