Question:

Dear Sir/Madam: I have a utility trailer by Carry-On Trailer Corporationfoot of Lavonia, GA. The model number is 5 x 8 M. Net weight of trailer is 375 libs and max load is 1625 lbs. It has a five bolt lug pattern and 13inch tires Although Ive had the trailer for at least 10 years and have replaced both wheel bearing as a preventative maintenancefoot I still would like to carry a spare trailer hub/bearing assembly with me. What other information would you need in order for me to order the correct hub/bearing assembly. Id probably also put in my emergency box a grease cap, cotter pin, and 5 lug nuts. Thank you for your help

The best way to select a new/spare hub for your trailer is to pull one of the hubs and remove its inner and outer bearings. The bearing part numbers will allow you to select a hub that will fit on your existing trailer spindles.

The linked page displays our main page for trailer hubs, both idler hubs (no brakes) and hub/drums for drum brake-equipped trailers. Since your trailer has a GVWR of 2000-lbs, it will likely have either a 2000- or 2200-lb-rated axle. Once you have your bearing numbers you can select that inner and outer bearing using the filters on the page. You will the see all hubs that use those bearings. Be sure to choose a hub rated for your axle capacity; there should be a sticker on the axle that indicates its weight rating.

There are several 5-lug bolt patterns but the most common is the 5-on-4-1/2-inch bolt pattern. The linked article will help you confirm which you need on your new hub.

For example, for a 5-on-4-1/2 idler hub for a 2200-b axle that uses L44649 for both inner and outer bearing, you can use Dexter galvanized hub # 8-258-50UC1-EZ. This hub kit includes the hub, bearings, races, grease seal, grease cap, and zinc-coated lug nuts.
