Installation

Installation Step 1

1. Spread the chain around the back of the tire.

Installation Step 2

2. Connect the yellow and blue cable at the back of the tire.

Installation Step 3

3. Push the cable into place behind the tire and center the cross chains on the tire's tread. Then, on the front side of the tire, join the 2 ends of the yellow side chain using the green hook.

Installation Step 4

4. Feed the silver draw chain with the rubber tensioner through the red channel at the bottom and pull it tight. Then run the tensioner through the red rings. (Note: Depending on your tire size, you might not be able to thread through both rings.) Pull the tensioner across the tire and fasten it to the yellow chain on the opposite side.

Installation Step 5

5. Pull your vehicle forward and retighten the chain.

Class "S" Designation

SAE Class "S" tire chains are designed for use on vehicles with restricted wheel well clearance. Certain newer cars, vans and small trucks, especially those with large, aftermarket tires, may require Class "S" chains.

SAE Class S Clearances

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle itself.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

These chains were amazing! I was a bit hesitant to go with chains over cables due to the car's manual saying to use cables, but after talking to Bob at etrailer, and watching the install videos, I went with them (on all four tires) and am glad I did! We went up to Yosemite for the New Year, and it snowed the day we drove in. We got through the gate into the park without needing chains, but once inside, the roads started to get covered, and though we have AWD, we don't have snow tires and the chains seemed like the best option. We pulled over and had the chains on all four tires within about 20 minutes. The car ran like a tank through the snow (and later, ice-covered roads) and I'm really happy we went with the chains rather than cables. After putting on the chains, we drove about 100 yards to check and tighten them. They were actually pretty tight - only had to tighten one. They really really came in handy driving through the Yosemite Valley, and the email responses I got from Bob prior to buying these showed me great customer service. The shipping speed was top notch as well, and overall, I'm happy that we went with etrailer to get these chains for our snow-covered trip to Yosemite.

After a year of owning these chains, still couldnt be happier. Weve moved from CA to the east coast and though we havent yet had the need to put the chains on, we keep them in the car just in case. Having the peace of mind that I can stop and put them on quickly if needed makes me happy, and I still am very glad that I was able to get these from eTrailer with guidance from Bob

These are the most incredible chains I have seen that don't cost $500. I travel both the Coquihalla and Crows Nest highways in BC, Canada and chains are mandatory after October. Weather conditions are not usually the best to be wrestling these things on. They come neatly packaged and separated - no untangling. They will come out and go straight on the car. These chains go on from the outside of the wheel with no crawling under the car or moving or steering the wheels to get them aligned. I'm 63 and really appreciate that! George was prompt with the order and got them to me in less than a week. Even upgraded my standard shipping to priority at no additional charge. He is no my go to for everything SUV!

The staff at etrailer was helpful in answering questions before I purchased my snow chains from etrailer. Once the package was delivered, they followed up with me making sure that i received my order and that the product was correct and fit correctly.

2017 Toyota Highlander

I bought this for my 2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid and used it this past weekend to go to Big Bear. Installation was very simple. The chains itself worked pretty well in the snow and they fit like a glove around the tire in my opinion. What I liked most about it is that you don't have to drive over it to install it. Just drape it over the tire and connect. Also, I found it very cool that the parts where you have to connect were color coded to help you with the install.

I bought these to use on my 26 foot RV. I followed the buying guide and ended up with these, not knowing if I would need them or not. Well, I was driving through WA in early December and the only way one could pass Snoqualmie pass was if one had snow chains. I had never put snow chains on an RV with dual wheels. Well, it wasn't hard and the chains worked like a charm. I am very satisfied and would recommend these. Easy to use and durable

2016 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500

etrailer was great, kept me notified and fast shipping. Tire chains, not so much. My fault for ordering 3.5MM chains, but they said for SUV or truck. These are very thin and light duty. Here in the Sierras of California, you're forced at times to drive on pavement before chain removal areas. These chains would wear out very fast in those conditions. If you plan on using these numerous times, I would recommend heavier duty chains.

Toyota Highlander

The tire chains for our Highlander arrived yesterday. Fortunately in western Oregon we only need chains if we decide to go over the mountains to the ski areas or the eastern part of the state and it is snowing. With luck they may never come out of the trunk. Thank you for your service.

We have had an unusually warm, dry winter. The chains have never been out of the trunk. BUT they are there ifwhen we need them. Thank you. CLB

These were/are a trip-saver. We have a Chrysler Pacifica (minivan), which is front wheel drive. These chains made it possible for us to get out of a steep, snow-covered (approx. 3” base snowpack w/ several inches of fresh powder on top) driveway, as well as to drive snowy mountain roads with confidence. Installation is quick enough the first time around (maybe 10min), and the learning curve is nothing to fear. After a couple of times, you’ll get it done in about 5min. I have 5 kids, so impatient passengers is a real concern, and stopping to put on these chains didn’t precipitate meltdowns. Conditions were such that repeated on-off-on-off was occasionally necessary on our trip last year. Again, you can get proficient at installation after 2-3 times, and be in the 5min range (definitely less than 10min). Wear gloves for grip and protection. Practice installation in your driveway a time or two, and you’ll be way ahead of the curve. Looking forward to toting these chains along for this year’s winter trip to the Rockies.

Recieved items faster than expected shipping which was a plus for our trip comming up. Once i received the item. I unboxed and tested (as u should before going into the snow) setup was simple, directions were straight forward and easy to follow. The only thing i didnt do was drive the car with the chains on yet cause its not snowing here. Will be using them this week and will uldate review with results!

2009 GMC Sierra

Worked great in hard packed snow/ice in the Sierra Nevada's. Also powered through heavy snow berms left from snowplows in parking lots at the ski hill, the condo complex, and around town during a nasty Sierra storm. All-season tires by themselves would have certainly involved shoveling to make it through the berms. They were also smooth up to almost 30mph with only a little vibration at 30, their max recommended speed. They are alot easier and faster to install than your typical ladder style chains. No driving on to the chains before making connections. All other chains I've purchased in the past needed separate tensioners, but the self-tensioning design of these chains is brilliant, and the color coding makes for foolproof installation. The performance and convenience of these chains are well worth the little bit extra in price compared to ladder styles. The zippered heavy nylon carrying case is far superior to the canvas sacks that came with the chains (of another brand) for our truck, and will be far more durable than the plastic box that came with chains (again, another brand) purchased for a previous vehicle. You really can't ask for anything more. I'd give more stars if possible.

by:

Low quality, and dangerous for your car. They broke after our first trip. The reviews are definitely wrong on this one. Don't endanger your car, get another brand

Etrailer Expert

Katrina B.

2/21/2023

Well that is dangerous! Do you have any more details on what broke and what your tire size is? I want to help but I need some more information.

by:

Unless your vehicle is garaged when you put these on, my experience was that they are more likely to fail. The ones I purchased broke after only 3 times trying to use them because I did not have a dry flat concrete pad when placing them on the tires. Putting them on when your traveling because the weather has turned is very difficult due to snow and ice build up around the tires as well as the snow packed roads don’t easily allow for the chains to go on evenly.

2006 Chevrolet TrailBlazer

These chains are solid and fit well on my 2006 Chevy Trailblazer. I was only able to test fit in my driveway, so I can't say how they do on the road yet, but they are simple and quick to install. I ordered them at around 10:30 p.m. PST, and received the order the next day with the upgraded 3-5 day shipping. My order had several items, but one item was missing from the initial delivery. The customer service at etrailer.com had the missing item sent out and at my door 2 days later with very little effort on my part. Awesome job etrailer.com! Your prompt and courteous customer service will most certainly bring me back for future needs!

2016 Audi Q5

First thing I noticed about these was the packaging/storage case that these came in. I was shocked at how nice the carrying case was. It gives you the impression these are high-quality tire chains...and they are! Well constructed and easy to put on. I bought these for my Audi Q5 to drive in the Seattle area. This winter we've had 12-30" of snow west of the Cascade mountains and 7 feet at the Snoqualmie Pass, which normally allows chains but was closed for several days. These chains have helped a ton, preventing us from being stuck in our house. We live in an area that is part of the Cascade mountain plateau and as such have steep hills and since we don't normally get this much snow it took longer to get the local and county to plow the roads. A life saver...

GMC Sierra

My tire chains arrived and I'm excited to use them for the next Sierra snow storm. Excellent quality chains and even the storage case is nice! For something that's going to sit in my trunk most of the time, it's nice to know the chains will be properly stored and self contained - for whenever they are needed. As for my overall customer experience with eTrailer, these guys are top notch! From product selection, ordering, shipping and communication throughout the process - I am completely satisfied and will gladly be a repeat customer! Thanks

This is a great product and just what I have been looking to purchase. I have researched Tire Chains for the past year and I am pleased with this product. I was able to easily put in details about my vehicle and had several options to review and ultimately purchase. I highly recommend etrailer for any of your needs, plus my chains come in a nice bag that holds the chains and also instructions on how to install!

The storage box for the Titan Chain Alloy Snow Tire Chains # TC2317 will comfortably fit in a 14-1/2" x 14-1/2" opening, but you might be able to squeeze it into a 14-1/4" x 14-1/4" opening if that's all you have available. It's only a few inches thick so it can easily be stored under some seats in a worst case scenario.

Chains are the better choice compared to cables. They offer more traction and usually last longer than other options. • Would Running One Set of Snow Chains 2019 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk Damage 4WD
In deep snow you would not damage anything by running only one set of chains. On dry pavement if you were in 4WD and you had two different size tires there'd be an issue, but in deep snow the rear axle would hardly have any traction so that would not be something to worry about at all. That said, in deep snow you'll want all the traction you can get so running chains on all 4 tires will be ideal as long as your owners manual says it's okay.
