I spoke with my contact at Reese and he recommended keeping a light coating of grease like part # 58117 on the hitch ball both top and bottom. This will keep the ball bearing locking mechanism working smoothly and prevent corrosion and quiet the connection to a degree. It will help extend the life of the ball too. The lubrication allows grit to slide around more, instead of just grinding directly into the metal.
