How to Stop Bike Rack Wobble When Using a 1-1/4" to 2" Hitch Adapter

Updated 10/23/2026 | Published 10/21/2026

Question:

I had the dealer put a tow hitch on my vehicle so I could attach my bicycle rack. Unfortunately they only install 1 1/4 inch receivers and my rack needs a 2inch. So I had to get a 1 1/4 to 2 inch adapter and thats why I ordered the locking hitch pin. There is still some play at the connection of the two, even with the pin. Do you have an or a suggestion on how to make it more stable. If not then I expect I will see my bike rack bouncing up and down. Thank you

Good afternoon Larry!

The Master Lock # 2848DAT you purchased will keep everything secure, but it doesn't have an anti-rattle feature to eliminate movement which explains what you're experiencing.

Since you're using a 1-1/4" to 2" adapter, you actually have two connection points where movement can occur. I recommend the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch # RM-061-125 for the connection between your vehicle's receiver and the adapter, and the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch # RM-061 for the connection between the adapter and bike rack. Both clamp down on the connections to help eliminate wobbling.

One important thing to keep in mind is that most hitch adapters reduce your hitch's tongue weight capacity by 50%. For example, if your hitch is rated for 200 lbs, you'd only have 100 lbs available for the combined weight of the bike rack and bikes. You'll also want to make sure your bike rack allows the use of an adapter. Ultimately, it's your setup and your decision, but I just want to make sure you're aware of those limitations!

Do you happen to know which adapter and bike rack you're using? I can double-check compatibility for you!

The quiet hitch looks like the solution but it needs to fit onto the smaller hitch, not the 2 inch. Can send picture and video if you give me way to do it. I have a Kuat Transfer V2 bike rack.

@LarryF The Roadmaster Quiet Hitch # RM-061-125 is actually the smaller 1-1/4" version, so that should be just what you need! Also, some Kuat Transfer V2 racks fit both 1-1/4" and 2" receivers without a separate adapter, so that's worth checking. You're welcome to reply with pictures via email if you want. [email protected]

@LarryF Hey Larry, I got the photo and video you emailed me. thanks for that. You have the 1-1/4" hitch receiver on there, so you just need the # RM-061-125 clamp which will help eliminate some of that wobble. Another option is a threaded anti rattle bolt # F-315 that replaces your receiver lock, but I'm not sure if you want to go that route and get rid of the lock.

Yep, I want to keep the lock. Will order the clamp. Thanks

Both my Master lock and adapter has some play in it installed. I think this is necessary to allow easy installation and removal. On the other hand, my Yakima bike rack has a tightening feature to firmly secure it to the adapter. Ed

@Ed Yes that is true; it is not meant to act as an anti-rattle device. That's nice that Yakima includes those built-in; not every brand does that.

@AndrewN I went down to garage and examined my setup. I had placed just a couple wraps of duct tape on my first connection. Followed by the Yakima rack. It really does not rattle. Ed
