Published 10/13/2026

Question:

Purchasing a 2027 cougar 290rls 5th wheel with a curt helux pin box. I have a 2026 chevy 2500 with 6 10 bed, with out factory puck system but will have the under mount band w puck system installed. What do I need to do to convert to a gooseneck hitch must light weight for one person installment without voiding the trailer 5 year trailer lippert and keystone warranty

Hey Stan,

Congrats on the new Cougar! Converting to a gooseneck setup sounds perfect for what you're wanting, since you won't have to lift a heavy fifth-wheel hitch in and out of your truck. You are spot on with installing the B&W Turnoverball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch w/ Custom Installation Kit - 30,000 lbs # BWGNRK1020 into your 2026 Silverado 2500.

I'd then recommend one of these shock-absorbing options depending on your factory pin box:

If the Lippert Rhino bolt pattern: CURT Helux Gooseneck # C22UB, which uses a coil spring to reduce chucking and road shock.

If the Lippert 1621 bolt pattern: B&W # BW73RV, which uses a SumoSpring branded shock absorber.

Both are approved for Lippert frame warranty coverage, but I'd confirm Keystone's separate warranty before ordering. But normally the frame warranty is the main one that customers worry about.

There are also less expensive options if you don't want shock-absorbing, but I think you'll really like that, especially since your current pin box is the Helux with shock-absorption. Do you have any fun trips planned?

Do I have completely change the pin box or can I just put a plug adapter to the curt hrlux. Then install the bw under plug. And purchase a tripod type hitch to raise the helux above the bed

@StanC Oh okay I get what you're wanting to do now. Sorry for the confusion. There's a few ways to accomplish what you're wanting to do. It sounds like you want the Andersen Ultimate Connection # 3220 which installs over your B&W Turnoverball gooseneck ball and connects to your existing fifth-wheel kingpin. It's the only part that you'll have to take in and out of the bed and it only weighs 35 lbs! You'll also need the Andersen Helux Pin Box Lockout Kit # AN64ZR, which is specifically designed for using the Helux with this hitch. Keep in mind, this will reduce the shock absorbing ability of the Helux. The only way to continue with shock absorption is to replace it with the parts mentioned in the original answer. Hope this helps!
