Which Trailer Hitch Receiver Will Work On My 1972 Chevy GMC K10 With Leaf Springs & Standard Bumper?

Updated 10/15/2026 | Published 10/10/2026

Question:

I have a 1972 Chevy k10 pickup. I am looking for a trailer hitch for it. Most every one I find says it will not work with leaf springs. Do they make one for with leaf springs. it is 4 wheel drive. It is a step side with a factory chrome bumper. Not a step bumper. Thank you for your help.

Hey Thomas,

You can use the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class IV - 2" # C14082. This fits the 1972 Chevy / GMC K10 pickup truck with the standard rear bumper (not drop bumper). The factory leaf springs won't interfere with installation! You'll just want to verify that your frame measures 34" wide from outside to outside.

If you also need trailer light harness, you can go with the universal 4 way flat from Curt # C58044, and then if you need 7 way for electric brakes on a trailer, you'd want to convert it to a 7 way with # ETBC7 and use a brake controller too # RED52VR.

Let me know if you need anything else! What are you planning to tow with it, Thomas?

@DanM Good to hear! I like those old K10s. I have a 64 C10 that I've been fixing up over the years.

I’m in the process of restoring my 1972 K10 and this one fits perfectly. Much stronger than the previous one I had.

@MarvinA That's awesome, thanks for the feedback! I've been restoring my 64 C10 on a budget, but those 70's K10s are slick!
