What Replacement Electric Brakes Fit A 1995 Aluma 7816 Trailer?

Updated 09/22/2026 | Published 09/12/2026

Question:

Hoping you can help. I need to change out the electric brakes on my 1995 Aluma 7816 trailer. I can’t read the gross vehicle weight on the tag. I’ve taken the hub off and can’t find any tags but on one of the shoes 9842 is stenciled. No tags on either axle. Can you tell me what came on the axles when new? My serial number is 1YGUS1827TB002725. I need to replace all four complete brake setups. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Dave

Hello David,

Thanks for writing in!

I see you were looking at the Terran Industries Self-Adjusting Electric Trailer Brakes # TX97ZJ, and those are the ones I recommend as long as we can confirm you have the standard 3,500 lb axle setup. These are 10" x 2-1/4" brake assemblies and come with both the left and right side, so you will need two sets to replace all four brakes.

Since your Aluma is a 1995 and the axle information is no longer readable, there are a few easy ways to double-check before ordering. First, look behind the hub and make sure your brake mounting flange has the standard 4-bolt pattern. I would also take another good look at the axle tube for a tag or stamped information that may show the axle capacity. the common set-up on this trailer is (2) 3,500 pound axles, but we can never assume they were swapped out for something else in the past.

If you can't find anything on the axle, measure the diameter of the round axle tube. A typical 3,500 lb axle will have a 2-3/8" diameter tube. I attached an image showing exactly where to take that measurement and some of the common axle tube diameters and capacities for comparison.

If you have 10" x 2-1/4" brakes, a 4-bolt mounting flange, and that 2-3/8" axle tube, you will want two sets of # TX97ZJ to replace all four brake assemblies.

What do you normally haul on your Aluma? How are your hubs looking?
