Do I Need to Grease the Spindle Before Installing a New Hub/Drum Assembly?

Updated 09/09/2026 | Published 09/02/2026

Question:

I purchased AKHD-545-35-K trailer hub and drum assembly, which came pre-greased. Do I need to grease the spindle before installing the drum? One video suggests doing so - never to much grease. What grease specification/type/brand is used in the pre-grease bearing? I dont want to mix grease if I need to coat the spindle in grease.

Hi Todd,

The etrailer Trailer Hub and Drum 3.5K Assembly part # AKHD-545-35-K comes pre-greased with Lithium complex, multipurpose grease. The spindle should have a light layer of grease on it before sliding on the drum assembly. You can use the LubriMatic Multi-Purpose Lithium Grease part # L11315.

Make sure to keep grease completely off the journal (smooth area at the back of the spindle), brake shoes, and braking surface inside the drum. Greasing these will seriously affect braking performance. I've linked a video showing one of our techs greasing and installing a new hub as well so you can get an idea of how much grease to use and where it goes on the spindle.

Are you changing out your brakes as well?

I bought a pair of brake hubs 2 years ago. They are already falling apart. Cheap quality metal. Do yourself a favor and buy some more expensive high quality ones somewhere else. I ended up taking those hubs off throwing them away and putting my old ones back on.

@Glenn I'm really sorry to hear that happened! That is definitely unusual and not something we hear about our hubs. Can I ask what kind of damage you were seeing?
