Will the Dometic RV Water Heater # DMC33RR Fit in Place of My Suburban SW6DE?

Updated 08/04/2026 | Published 07/28/2026

Question:

I have to replace my Suburban Hot-water unit SW6DE. I would like to replace it with a Dometic aluminum tank. My cut out is 12 3/4 x12 3/4. What models of Dometic would fit the opening. I see that the WH-6GEA might being 12 5/8 x 12 5/8. Are you able to confirm or make other recommendations? I appreciate any help you can provided. Thanks!

Hello Robert,

Thanks for writing in.

If you want to replace your Suburban SW6DE with another tank-style water heater, the Dometic RV Water Heater - 10,000 Btu - Propane/Electric - 6 Gallon Tank - 120V - Black Door # DMC33RR is the one I recommend.

Your existing 12-3/4" x 12-3/4" opening is very close to the 12-7/8" x 12-7/8" cutout required for the # DMC33RR. Because the Dometic requires an opening that is 1/8" larger in both height and width, I cannot guarantee it will fit your current opening without modification. If your RV manufacturer left a little extra clearance around the original water heater, it may fit as-is. If not, you would only need to enlarge the opening by about 1/16" per side, which is a very minor modification.

Other than that slight difference in the cutout, the # DMC33RR is an excellent replacement. Its aluminum tank is corrosion resistant and does not require an anode rod, so it is a nice upgrade from your original Suburban.

What kind of RV are you installing the new water heater in? Getting things geared up for the next great adventure, where are you headed to next?
