How Are Shackle Bolts Measured?

Updated 07/29/2026 | Published 07/24/2026

Question:

Shackle bolt measurement question. Shackle bolts for RV trailer leaf springs give a length. Is it the overall length or the should portion of the bolt length? Thanks

Hey Ken, thanks for reaching out. The measurements we list for our shackle bolts is the length under the bolt head, not the overall length.

For example, the Zinc Shackle Bolt # TRFA73Z916DLNZ is 3" long. That is the length of the shoulder, bolt and threads, not including the head of the bolt. I've included a picture showing the measurements.

Are you needing just a single replacement bolt? Or are you looking to replace all the bolts and shackles on your trailer?

@KenC it is the overall length I bought a set over a year ago and put in a 33 ft Grand design image trailer and they have done great they've not rusted they seem to be real strong bolts I've had no problem with them backing off or nothing.

HI, I bought these shackles about a year ago, very heavy duty. But the galvanization was so heavy that the bolts wouldn’t fit through the holes. I had to buy a large drill bit and redrill all the holes on my drill press. It wasn’t difficult but added all the time of ordering and waiting for the drill bit to arrive, plus the time of red rolling each hole. I had 4 pairs of shackles = 16 holes to drill!
