Thickness or Rear Backing Plates on Tie Down Spare Tire Mount

Updated 07/24/2026 | Published 07/19/2026

Question:

How thick is the strap that holds the tire mount to the frame? I have a new Jayco Jay Feather with no spare. The gap between the ba k wall and bumper is 1/4. The photo is 1/4inch aluminum for reference. I have no problem getting carriage bolts to minimize the bolt head thickness at the wall location.

Hey Craig,

Thanks for your question. I went down to our warehouse and measured the thickness of the backing plate on # TD86FR, and it measures right at 1/4 inch. Based on the photo you sent and the amount of clearance you have available, I do think you may need to make a few minor hardware adjustments, just as you mentioned. That said, I also noticed you've already placed an order for this item, so I wanted to confirm that this should work well.

Congratulations on the new Jayco, by the way! Do you have any trips planned for the summer?

Hi Christopher, Thanks for confirming the metal thickness. I had to take the chance and order due to our maiden trip in 1 week from today. We are going to a music festival with camping. I purchased the spare holder are spare tire from eTrailer and both should be here today. I really enjoy purchasing from eTrailer because of the support and selection. I will post a review once I get it installed. Hopefully can help other Jay Feather owners who need to install a spare due the lack of one from Jayco. I am sure it's cost cutting that I think is a bad decision on a critical component of RV'ing.

@CraigD No problem at all. I'm confident this will work well for you despite the limited clearance. Like you mentioned, the review would be super helpful as I'm sure there are other Jayco owners having the same issue. Enjoy your trip!
