Does PullRite 2600 Require Safety Chains?

Question:

Hello, I am considering purchasing a PullRite 2600 SuperLite fifth-wheel hitch for my 2014 Ford F-250. My trailer is a 2015 Grand Design Solitude 325X fifth-wheel. The 2600 would use a PullRite king-pin adapter to connect the fifth-wheel trailer to the 2600 hitch. I am trying to determine whether safety chains are required for this setup. Does PullRite make a safety-chain kit, chain plate, or other accessory specifically designed to connect safety chains from a fifth-wheel RV to the 2600 king-pin adapter? I understand that the PullRite 4437 safety-chain plate is designed for a traditional gooseneck trailer and is not intended to connect chains from a fifth-wheel RV using a king-pin conversion adapter. Could you please clarify: 1. Is a safety-chain system required or recommended when using the 2600 with a fifth-wheel king-pin adapter? 2. Does PullRite offer a specific safety-chain solution for this application? 3. Is the 2600/king-pin-adapter combination considered exempt from safety-chain requirements under California law because the 2600 is a fifth-wheel hitch? 4. If safety chains are required, what exact PullRite-approved parts should be used? Thank you for your help.

Using a fifth-wheel hitch like PullRite Single Point SuperLite Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter - 20K # PUL33RR on your 2014 Ford F-250 is a great option! I get the conundrum that since it uses a gooseneck ball as the mounting point you're not sure about needing safety chains, but they won't be required with this hitch. Safety chains are required when hooking a trailer directly to a ball, but since this system only uses the gooseneck ball as an attachment point, it's really a kingpin-style connection and therefore does not require the use of safety chains, even in California. With that, there is no PullRite kit for the safety chain connection on a fifth-wheel.

Are you planning a trip to California or is that your home state? Does your truck already have the gooseneck hitch installed in the bed?

Hi Jerry, thanks for the reply, live in California and my truck doesn’t have the gooseneck ball installed yet. I have a super slide model 4400 and I’m needing my truck bed more and this hitch is very heavy. I’m looking for something much lighter that I can install and remove by myself. I was considering having ISR rails installed but since I already have the rails for the 4400 in my truck bed, I was told I can’t have ISR rails installed because the additional holes drilled in my truck bed would be to close to the other existing holes. Which gooseneck ball would you recommend for my truck bed?

@TerryD My favorite system is the B&W Turnover Ball system and the one made for your truck is # BWGNRK1111. The install doesn't require drilling into the frame, but there are holes that need to be drilled into the truck bed. I've linked the install instructions below for you to see if the hole locations will interfere with the holes already in your truck's bed.
