How to Bypass a Factory Trailer Brake Controller with a REDARC Tow-Pro Liberty

Updated 07/22/2026 | Published 07/18/2026

Question:

I have a 2010 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD, which has a trailer service that is not working due to ABS module failure. I like to install a trailer brake controller to bypass the factory trailer brake. Which product would be best to use without the expense ?

Hi! You can absolutely bypass the factory brake controller, but before going that route I'd take a look at what's causing the ABS warning. An ABS module failure doesn't always mean the module itself is bad. It can also be caused by something as simple as a faulty wheel speed sensor, damaged wiring, a blown fuse, or corrosion at the 7-way trailer connector. Since the factory brake controller relies on the ABS system, those issues can interrupt communication with the trailer brakes and trigger the "Service Trailer Brake System" message. I'd start there before replacing or bypassing anything.

If you'd rather bypass the factory controller, I would use the REDARC Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller, Part # RED52VR. It's a great brake controller, and you can wire it independently of the factory system by running a new brake output wire, Part # 10-1-1, directly to your 7-way connector.

The REDARC Tow Pro Liberty uses a standard four wire installation. The black wire connects to the positive battery terminal through a dedicated 25 amp circuit breaker. The white wire connects directly to the negative battery terminal or to a clean, unpainted chassis ground. The red wire connects to the brake pedal switch wire that receives 12 volt power only when the brake pedal is pressed. So this will require some wiring to bypass but it is doable.

Have you had the error code checked out yet?
