Using the PD52 50 Amp Transfer Switch with 30 Amp Service

Updated 07/21/2026 | Published 07/16/2026

Question:

Hi The Progressive Dynamics transfer switch PD 5110610 in my motorhome melted at the wire junction. It looks like the transfer switch you sell, the PD 5110010Q is the replacement. The PD52 transfer switch you sell looks like a much heaver duty transfer switch. So my question is can I use the PD52 in my motorhome that has a 30 Amp service? Thanks Marc

Hey Marc,

Thanks for reaching out. Yes, the Progressive Dynamics Automatic Transfer Switch # PD52 is compatible with both 120V and 240V systems, so it can absolutely be used with a 30-amp service.

For a 30-amp setup, you would connect your shore power's hot conductor to the HOT1 terminal, while the HOT2 terminal would remain unused. This can be a nice option if you think you may upgrade to 50-amp service in the future or simply want the added durability and capacity of a 50-amp transfer switch.

If you're planning to keep your RV as a 30-amp system, the Progressive Dynamics Automatic Transfer Switch # PD5110010Q is the direct replacement for your existing PD5110610 and would be the simplest, most straightforward option.

Do you typically stay at RV parks with shore power, or do you spend most of your time boondocking?

We normally stay at RV parks but will use the Generator if we are traveling and boondock overnite.
