Realistically can I get away with a 90 lb bike on a Honda Accord with an 1¼inch receiver?

Hi Michael!

It's definitely possible to carry a 90 pound bike with the 1-1/4" hitch on your 2018 Honda Accord. The issue is actually going to be the capacity of the bike rack. As an example, the Saris MHS DUO Bike Rack for 1 Bike - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Wheel Mount # SAR23MR has the highest carrying capacity out of all the racks we currently carry for a 1-1/4" hitch. That said, it can carry up to an 80 pound bike, not a 90 pound bike.

So to carry your 90 pound bike, you are going to need to go a different way. What I recommend using is something like the 19x47 Curt Cargo Carrier for 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Steel - 300 lbs # C18110. This has plenty of capacity and you can add the Stromberg Carlson Bike Rack Adapter for Hitch Mounted Cargo Carriers # CC-125 to make carrying the bike upright nice and easy. You will also need something like the SmartStraps Cam Buckle Tie-Down Straps w/ S-Hooks - 1" x 6' - 400 lbs - Qty 2 # 348136 to secure it to the carrier.

I also highly recommend grabbing something like the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch for 1-1/4" Trailer Hitches # RM-061-125. The # C18110 carrier does come with an anti-rattle hitch pin/bolt, but this Roadmaster part really keeps the rack secure.

Out of curiosity, what kind of bike do you have? we see some fairly heavy ones these days, but rarely a 90 pound bike.

I was about to ask the same - what bike? My Velotric Nomad 2X is 72ish lbs with no battery and I haven’t seen any heavier yet. This rack is SOLID, just make sure you don’t over tighten the wheel holders. Those teeth are made of plywood.
