Will Kuat Piston SR Bike Rack Work with 5" Wide Tires?

Updated 03/06/2025 | Published 03/02/2025

Question:

Hello, I have a 2024 Honda odyssey sport with factory installed hitch. I know this rack sits low. Would it work with the vehicle? And one of my bikes has 5” tires. I know the specs say “up to 5” tires” but does it actually fit a 5”? Thanks in advance.

Hey Kim, thanks for reaching out!

The Kuat Piston SR Bike Rack # KU88ZR just sits straight out so while it doesn't sit lower, it definitely doesn't rise up so I can see why you have the concern about ground clearance on a 2024 Honda Odyssey. It will work 5" wide tires though so you're definitely good on that front.

Back to the height concern. There are some alternative options to get you better height so if you're afraid of ground contact then I recommend checking out the Kuat Pivot 2 Swing Away Hitch Extender # PVP20B which raises the height by 3" and has a swinging arm so you can gain full access to your rear cargo area without removing your bike (something that's handy on a minivan for sure)

The other option is a different bike rack altogether like the Kuat NV 2.0 Base # BA22B. This has a 3-1/2" rise built into it and it enables you to carry up to 2 bikes instead of just one so the main concern here is if your bike has a front fender then you might have some issues with this fitting.

Do either of these sound like something you'd like to go with, or would you rather explore some other options?

Thanks for the information. Is the swing away added to the Piston SR?

@Kim It doesn't automatically come with the Piston SR, but they can be used together. If you wanted something built-in, then I recommend checking out the RockyMounts BackStage # RKY10002 because it comes with a swing away and works with 5" wide tires.
