Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Hitch Recommendation for a 17 Foot Casita Liberty Deluxe

Updated 05/29/2026 | Published 05/25/2026

Question:

Hey there, I have a Casida Liberty Deluxe 17’ and looking for a weight stabilizing anti sway system. I fond the Equal-i-zer hitch and I think I want to go that route. The max GVWR is 3500 lbs and the max tongue is 400 of the casita. I would like to go with either the equalizer 4,000 lbs GTW, 400 lbs TW but after some reading some people are saying to go up in weight but that brings me to the 6,000 lbs GTW, 600 lbs TW since there is no 5000 - 500. Other people are saying the 6000 would be too stiff and not the right pick Can you please help with a recommendation if it’s ok to stay with the 4000 - 400?

Jason, I completely understand the confusion because this is one of the most common debates when people are choosing an Equal i zer system. Nobody wants a hitch that feels too soft and allows sway, but at the same time you do not want to spend the money on a system that is so stiff it makes the trailer ride harsher than it needs to.

For your Casita Liberty Deluxe with a 3,500 lb GVWR and a maximum tongue weight rating of 400 lbs, I would actually lean toward the 600 Lb Equal-i-zer part # EQ37060ET. Ideally, you want your loaded tongue weight to fall somewhere near the middle of the spring bar rating range rather than right at the upper limit so this is a better fit for your loaded tongue weight of 400 lbs since the spring bars are rated for between 200-600 lbs.

The Equal i zer is a fantastic system because it does more than just distribute weight. Its built in 4 point sway control helps prevent trailer sway before it starts instead of simply reacting after the trailer has already begun moving around. That extra stability is one of the reasons so many Casita owners and small trailer owners swear by them, especially when dealing with passing trucks, gusty winds, or uneven road conditions.

While the 4,000 lb and 400 lb tongue weight version part # EQ90-00-0400 would technically work, I think the 6,000 lb and 600 lb tongue weight model gives you a little more room for real world camping without being excessively oversized for your setup. It is the option I would choose if I were setting up a Casita for long term use.

Where do you love taking the Casita most, windy plains, mountain passes, or the coast?
