Can 2026 Toyota RAV4 Woodland With Tow Package Use Weight Distribution Hitch

Updated 05/08/2026 | Published 04/29/2026

Question:

I have a new 2026 Rav 4 Woodland model that can tow 3500lbs and has the hitch already installed. I just bought a Forest River rockwood model A214 that weighs 2675 lbs. I have spoken to at least 5 trailer stores and get mixed answers, Would I need a weight distribution hitch? One guy told me that my car is a Unibody construction and not recommended for that. Others told me not needed. It is a pop up and height when down is 5.6What are your thoughts. Thanks so much. I am new to all of this and very confusing

Hey Tom, congratulations on the new vehicle and camper! This can get pretty confusing so I'll try to clear things up for you here. What you're hearing about a unibody is typically correct. Most of the time you do not want to use a weight distribution hitch, but it is not an absolute. The bigger issue here is that factory hitch. It is not rated for a WDH so we can go ahead and rule that out as an option.

That 2,675 lbs I believe is the dry weight for your A214, so you're going to be even closer to the max capacity for the hitch/vehicle once you add batteries, propane, and whatever else you're carrying. Based on that, you will probably want some kind of sway control or suspension enhancement.

Also, that trailer should have electric brakes, and as far as I can tell the RAV4 Woodland comes with a 4-way. You are going to need to upgrade to a 7-way using # ETBC7 if you haven't already so you can use a brake controller. For a brake controller, I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty # RED52VR. The Liberty is simple, reliable, and won't take up space in the cab. The main unit hides behind the dash so only the control knob is visible. This gives it a clean, OEM appearance.

Going back to sway control and suspension enhancement, here is what I would do. Go ahead and hook up the trailer to your RAV4 Woodland. If you're getting a lot of rear squat, I would add the Timbren SES # T58GR. These will level you out which goes a long way with towing.

After that, take it out for a test drive. If you feel like you're getting a lot of sway, you can add the Curt True Course Advanced Bluetooth Trailer Sway Control # C94VV. This will use the brakes on your trailer to correct sway and keep the trailer under control.

Any big trips planned once you get everything all set up and ready to go?

@Tom you're welcome! A little test driving is the best way to get a feel for everything and you can go from there. If you need anything else don't hesitate to reach out.
