How do I Determine when My Equa-Flex Cushioned Equalizers Needs to be Changed?

Question:
How do I determine when it is worn enough to need replacement? The lower arms on mine have approximately 3/8” gap on each arm from rubber when pulled down. Is his too much” rubber looks good, no visible cracks or damage.

Great question!
You’re looking at this the right way. With the EquaFlex, it’s not just about how the rubber looks, it’s about whether it’s still doing its job. That rubber core should stay slightly compressed at normal ride height and only flex when the suspension moves. If you’re seeing a noticeable gap when it’s unloaded, it usually means the rubber has taken a set and isn’t working like it should anymore.
A gap around 3/8 inch on each arm is getting into the worn range. Something like 1/8 inch is pretty normal, around 1/4 inch is moderate wear, but once you’re closer to 3/8 inch, it’s usually past its prime even if the rubber still looks good with no cracks.
The main concern with letting it go too long is added stress on the suspension and tires. When the equalizer isn’t absorbing movement like it should, that force gets transferred into the leaf springs, hangers, and tires, which can lead to uneven tire wear or premature component wear over time.
A simple go/no-go check is to look at it with the trailer fully loaded and sitting level. The arms should be close to level with the rubber clearly engaged. If they’re drooping or the rubber doesn’t look compressed, that’s a good sign it’s time to replace it. At around 3/8 inch of gap, I’d consider that a “plan to replace soon” situation, especially before any longer trips.
They no longer make the exact equalizer you have, but a really solid replacement is the MORryde 14-3/4" Shock Absorbing Equalizer # MR34AR. It’s a great upgrade and you’ll likely notice an improvement in ride quality.
