Is A ST205/75R14 Tire The Modern Equivalent Of A F78-14ST Tire?

Updated 03/13/2026 | Published 03/09/2026

Question:

Need to replace 2 boat trailer tires. The current tires say F78-14ST. Is a 205/75-14 the same? And what about load rating? The GVW of boat is 1,480 lbs. Towing would only be on paved roads. Thanks for your assistance.

Hello Connie, thanks for reaching out. Yes, a modern ST205/75R14 is the current metric equivalent to the older F78-14ST size. The overall diameter and width are very close, so it is considered a direct replacement.

With a GVW of 1,480 lbs and two tires on the trailer, each tire is only supporting roughly 740 lbs at maximum load. Even a Load Range C ST205/75R14 gives you a large safety margin. A Load Range D works as well but is more capacity than you need. For paved road towing and a boat that size, a Load Range C radial trailer tire is a great fit and provides plenty of strength and stability.

That being said, here is what I recommend:

- Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range C # KE88KV

What kind of trailer do you have? Are you needing new wheels too? Or just the tires?

We bought this recommended tire as a spare tire for our camper {3020 lbs dry weight}. Although we have not used it, it is identical to the tires on our camper {same make and model tire}, the tires on the camper have held up very well. They have about 6K miles on them and still look new. Make sure you check your tire pressure every time you tow you boat and keep them aired up. Low tire pressure can wear a tire pretty quickly.

@RandyK Hey Randy, thanks for sharing! Great tip about checking the tire pressure too. That's great real-world feedback!
