Weak Braking With Toyota Tundra Factory Brake Controller

A couple of questions: Does the Redarc Trailer Brake Controller have the ability to apply the trailer brakes without applying the tow vehicles brakes? Like some sort of actuating lever or dial? My 2020 Toyota Tundra has a factory-equipped trailer brake controller but it seems very weak - even with the gain set to its maximum, I cant get the wheels on my 17-foot, 3,000-pound, single-axle travel trailer to lock up when I squeeze the actuator on the dash. The axle on the trailer is brand new with new brakes as well - Im confident that theyre properly adjusted. Do I need to install an after-market controller?

Hi Neal, Those are really solid questions, and I understand your concerns.

Yes, the Redarc brake controllers like part # RED64UR do allow you to apply the trailer brakes independently of the truck brakes. The dash knob has a built-in manual override feature. When you press the knob in, it activates only the trailer brakes, which is great for testing braking strength or managing control on grades.

With your 3,000-pound single-axle trailer, you should be feeling strong response when using manual override at max gain. However, many owners report that the factory Toyota controller has a soft or weak braking feel, even at maximum settings. They’re often tuned conservatively, which can make them feel underpowered compared to a quality aftermarket proportional controller.

If your brakes are properly adjusted and fully broken in, and it still feels weak, moving to a Redarc Tow-Pro is a very reasonable step. It typically provides stronger, smoother proportional braking and more consistent output, which can restore that confidence you’re looking for when you press the manual control or get into a hard stop.
